Agnès was born in 1941 into a family of lawyers in Versailles, France. The brand name 'agnès b.' comes from the initial of her first husband's Bourgeois surname. After graduating from the Versailles School of Fine Art with aspirations to become a museum curator, influenced by her art-loving father, she married and gave birth at 17. In the 1960s, after working as an editor for ELLE magazine, she spent some time as a freelance designer for several big fashion houses. After her divorce, she found herself a single mother of young twins and decided to establish her own brand in 1975, adopting her name. The first boutique was opened on Rue du Jour in Paris. The store, which was refurbished from an old butcher shop, was widely acclaimed for its cutting-edge style with a combination of decadence and avant-garde elements, creating a huge buzz in the world of Parisian fashion.
