When you think of a hat store or a Japanese hat brand, the first one that comes to mind is probably '
CA4LA' (pronounced 'Ka-see-la'). It has long been known for its commitment to 'Made in Japan' and has many fans both at home and abroad.
This time, I had the chance to talk to Nobuhiro Akimoto, the director of CA4LA INC., and Sayumi Yuhara from the marketing team's press department, about CA4LA's history, popular products, and the 'Meister system', which is set to take on the future of the hat industry.
"Let me begin by talking about the roots of CA4LA. We originally operated under the name 'Weave Toshi', running several stores during a time when casual hat shops were still a rarity.
"The founder (who has since retired) traveled overseas himself to purchase items, selecting foreign brands and although not as extensive as the current range, also offered a lineup of original Japanese-made products.
"In 1997, we renamed the shop CA4LA and opened a store along Meiji Street in Harajuku. This was when we started to expand our store network. Now, our flagship store is in Omotesando, and we operate 21 stores in Japan and two in Taiwan."
