This time, we had an opportunity to hear in detail from Hayano, the director of INDIVIDUALIZED SHIRTS JAPAN, a subsidiary of
Maiden Company Co., Ltd., about their custom shirts.
Custom shirts are more popular in America than in Japan
"INDIVIDUALIZED SHIRTS started in 1961 in a small town of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, close to Manhattan, by John Laresca and George Zimmerman.
“In America, custom tailoring or 'made-to-measure' services are more prevalent, with many tailor shops spread across the country. However, INDIVIDUALIZED SHIRTS is different from typical custom shirt providers. The two founders revolutionized the American custom-clothing business in the 1960s.
“Unlike the conventional custom shirt-making process, where a tailor takes measurements and then stitches the entire shirt, INDIVIDUALIZED SHIRTS developed a system that allowed their shirts to be made in a similar manner to mass-produced shirts. They treated each custom order like a mass production process where different artisans contributed their specific task for each shirt. For example, there were people specializing in sewing only sleeves, others only collars, and thus a single shirt was made as a result of this divided labor system.
