Last year marked the 150th anniversary of '
MoonStar Company'. Looking back over its long history, MoonStar started with the creation of tabi – a type of traditional Japanese sock – and that craft led to the company's current signature product, the '
810s'.
In this article, we talked to Masaki Shibata from MoonStar's lifestyle planning section and Chinami Yokota from their marketing team to learn more about the roots of MoonStar and their staple items with 810s.
Beginning with the Creation of 'Tsuchiya Tabi'
First, let's look back at MoonStar's 150-year history. We asked Yokota to talk us through the company's journey from its inception to becoming a renowned shoe brand today."The founder, Unpei Kurata, started making tabi footwear for indoor use under the business name 'Tsuchiya Tabi' in 1873. To make the tabi, they imported sewing machines, and when a sewing machine company representative visited them in 1920, he brought along a pair of American-made canvas shoes. Upon seeing these, Kurata thought of applying a rubber sole to the tabi to make it functional for outdoor use as well.
