The Origins & Cutting Edge of HOKA – Explaining "MAFATE" Born for Enjoying Trail Running

Currently popular on the road, trail, and as a town-use model, HOKA has an essential model in its history: the trail running model “Mafate,” which can be said to be the origin of HOKA.

The “Mafate Origins” released this season is based on the trail running shoes “Mafate 3” released in 2010, with modern materials used for the sole and an updated, modern upper tailored to fit daily lifestyles. On the other hand, the trail running shoes “Mafate Speed 4,” which continue the Mafate lineage, are designed to maintain high mobility even on long-distance trails.

So why has “Mafate” gained strong support from trail runners and also achieved high popularity as a lifestyle model?

The name “Mafate” comes from Mafate Cirque on Reunion Island, the venue for the Grand Raid de la Réunion, known as one of the world’s toughest 100-mile races. Its name was given due to being equipped with features for conquering rugged trails.

Propulsion from “Mafate Speed 4”

First, let's look at the new model “Mafate Speed 4,” which boasts state-of-the-art features for handling technical surfaces.

“The key feature is using a two-layer midsole named PROFLY, which combines a moderately elastic foam to enhance cushioning and a firm foam to increase propulsion. Its high rebound properties greatly benefit rocky courses,” says HOKA Senior Field Service Rep, Masao Ando.
The PROFLY structure is used in the road running model “Mach 5.” Compared to HOKA's staple “Clifton” or “Bondi,” Mach emphasizes rebound and propulsion over cushioning. Road runners who love HOKA shoes might understand the position of “Mafate Speed 4” by hearing this.

The outsole features Vibram MEGAGRIP with 5mm lugs. The deep flex grooves enhance flexibility, making it easier to handle various surfaces such as grass, gravel, rocky terrain, and muddy areas. Additionally, the upper has been completely revamped from the previous model.

“The upper now uses Jacquard mesh, which improves fit and breathability. More room in the toe box than previous models allows the entire upper to fit the foot better.”

Selecting the optimal shoes according to distance, surface conditions, and course characteristics is the secret to enjoying trail running without injuries. When you need rebound and propulsion or want to run lightly on technical surfaces, “Mafate Speed 4” will deliver.

“HOKA offers a wide range of trail running shoes. Even just comparing outsoles, each shoe has its uniqueness, and shoes can be chosen according to the course and running ability. For long races, swapping shoes halfway depending on weather and surface conditions is also an option. I personally use Mafate Speed 4 on trails, and it's a model that provides comfortable rebound, so I'd recommend trying it at least once.”

“Mafate Origins” Sold Out Online Immediately

The “Mafate” series is not only supported by trail runners but has also gained popularity in the fashion scene.

This September, the revival model “Mafate Origins,” which pays homage to the French Alps where HOKA's roots lie, was introduced. Based on the “Mafate 3” released in 2010, modern materials were used in the sole, and the upper design was modernized. A quick lace system was also adopted for the shoelaces.

A pair packed with the essence of HOKA, known for its thick soles, quickly sold out online in both the original blue color and the new black and white colors. The functional beauty of HOKA shoes, designed for comfortable and safe trail running, seems to also make them attractive as fashion items.
