As May ushers in the start of summer, it is no longer surprising when extreme heat days arrive. This is a trend we've seen in recent years. From July, there’s an increase in extremely hot days, and even after the start of autumn in August, temperatures often remain high, lasting with sweltering days into September. In July 2023, the United Nations raised awareness of the phenomenon dubbed "Global Boiling," which we are likely to feel every day this year.

Choosing the right innerwear is crucial for comfortably enduring the extreme heat. Previously, "Millet" was renowned for its innerwear "DRYNAMIC" designed to keep the skin dry during mountain excursions, but it has also been proving its effectiveness against urban heat in recent years. Therefore, I visited Millet Mountain Group Japan Co., Ltd. to talk in detail with developer Hisao Sakurai.

Nearly the entire garment is made of mesh. Wearing "DRYNAMIC MESH," a sweat-wicking innerwear developed by the acclaimed French alpine brand "Mllet," surprisingly alleviates the discomfort of sweat. It provides a completely different wear experience compared to typical moisture-wicking garments. Why is that?

"While there are mesh and woven varieties in moisture-wicking functional wear, 'DRYNAMIC' uses a stretchable mesh fabric that employs capillary action in the gaps to first pull sweat away from the skin and then spread it across the garment, utilizing the thickness of the mesh fabric to swiftly distance moisture from the skin. The effect is fast and reliable since it draws sweat away effectively.

"Most moisture-wicking wear has a simple composition of functional materials, focusing more on sending moisture from the inside to the outside, which can often lead to pooling when sweating profusely. Sweat pooling causes the skin to feel sticky and can lead to sweat chilling due to evaporative cooling. The advantage of 'DRYNAMIC' is that it spreads sweat and keeps it away from the skin."
