Smooth Ride & Impressive Balance! ASICS "GEL-CUMULUS 27"
ASICS' "GEL-CUMULUS" series is a long-selling daily trainer loved by runners for its exceptional cushioning and lightweight feel.
While it may not be as popular in Japan as "GEL-KAYANO" or "GEL-NIMBUS," its smooth, unobtrusive ride has earned it a devoted following for years. How has the latest GEL-CUMULUS 27 evolved?
Outstanding Cushioning Performance of the "GEL-CUMULUS" Series
Let's begin by clarifying where the "GEL-CUMULUS" line fits in the ASICS running shoe family. ASICS running shoes are organized into several silos: the Speed Silo, focused on delivering speed; the Cushion Silo, which pursues maximum comfort and plush ride; the Stability Silo for extra support; and the Bounce Silo, which emphasizes energetic bounce.Shoes like the "METASPEED" represent the Speed Silo as race-day models. For the Stability Silo and Bounce Silo, the signature models are the "GEL-KAYANO" and "NOVABLAST," respectively.
The "GEL-CUMULUS" falls under the Cushion Silo. While this category also includes the "GEL-NIMBUS" as its premium cushioning offering, the "GEL-CUMULUS" achieves an excellent balance between lightness and softness.
"In terms of pure cushioning, 'GEL-NIMBUS' is superior, but the 'GEL-CUMULUS' is lightweight, provides just the right amount of ground feedback, and is easy to use even on treadmills, making it versatile for a wide variety of running scenarios," says Tomoko Fujihata, Product Planning at ASICS Japan Corp.

Outsole Mixed with EVA & Rubber
The midsole of the "GEL-CUMULUS 27" uses FF Blast+—a material known for its lightweight, cushioning, and responsiveness. The heel section also features PureGEL, just like the "GEL-NIMBUS 27." The thickest part of the sole measures about 38.5mm (men's size), absorbing impact efficiently.Another standout feature of the "GEL-CUMULUS 27" is its outsole. Most running shoes use rubber in the outsole for durability and abrasion resistance. Occasionally, some shoes prioritize weight reduction and a smooth ride by using EVA—but at the expense of durability compared to rubber soles.
The "GEL-CUMULUS 27" introduces a rubber foam sole called Fluidride outsole, which is a blend of EVA and rubber. This material brings together the strengths of both: a soft, smooth ground contact and high durability.
"The smooth transition from landing to toe-off and the effortless ride showcase the unique qualities of the GEL-CUMULUS. Fluidride outsole was also used in the GEL-CUMULUS 26, but with this update, the grooves are now deeper for improved grip."

The upper features engineered mesh with variations in knitting and hole size for enhanced breathability and support where needed. Ventilation has improved over the previous version.
"The prior version used a thin, knit-like tongue, but this time, we upgraded to a slightly thicker tongue based on runner feedback. This small increase in thickness has reduced pressure on the top of the foot," shares Fujihata.

Effortless, Soft, & Comfortable Ride
Once you slip your foot in, you get that signature ASICS comfortable fit. The last (foot shape) is the same as the "GEL-KAYANO 31," "GEL-NIMBUS 27," and "NOVABLAST 5," which means even first-time wearers will feel as if they're putting on a familiar favorite. While running, you'll notice the adaptability, moderate cushioning, and smooth ride. Unlike the plush feel of the "GEL-NIMBUS 27" or the bounce of the "NOVABLAST 5," the "GEL-CUMULUS 27" stands out for its overall balanced approach with no extremes.
This is a model especially easy to recommend for those just starting their running journey. Naturally, veteran runners looking for a jogging shoe will find it just as suitable.
Traditionally, in Japan, models from the stability silo like the "GEL-KAYANO" series have enjoyed immense popularity, while cushioned models such as "GEL-NIMBUS" and "GEL-CUMULUS" have tended to be more favored in Western countries.
However, in recent years, high-cushion models have been gaining traction in Japan as well. There are several possible reasons, but one is likely the increase in casual runners since the COVID-19 pandemic—not only those competing in races, but also people running casually for health maintenance, stress relief, or simply as a way to connect with others.

The previous "GEL-CUMULUS 26" was available exclusively at ASICS stores and those operated by the Xebio Group, but this new edition is set to be rolled out at a wider range of retailers. Its neutral, easy ride and accessible price point of 15,950 yen (tax included) make it a shoe likely to earn the love of many runners.
