The Potential of ASICS "GEL-NIMBUS 27" with Enhanced Cushioning
Named after the Latin word for "cloud," NIMBUS, the ASICS "GEL-NIMBUS" series provides a soft ride experience, as if running on clouds, and has been a bestseller since its debut in 1999, enjoying widespread support among runners.
It boasts significant popularity in the large cushioning shoe markets of Europe and America. The latest model in the series, which features improved cushioning, is the GEL-NIMBUS 27. How has it been updated? We spoke with Tomoko Fujihata from the product planning team.
Midsole Thickness Increased by 2mm
The midsole of the "GEL-NIMBUS 27" continues to utilize the FF BLAST PLUS ECO material, just like its predecessor. This foam material is lightweight and soft, featuring the bouncy rebound of FF BLAST PLUS functionality, with approximately 24% derived from plant-based sources for environmental consideration.The biggest update point of the "GEL-NIMBUS 27" is that the midsole has been increased in thickness by 2mm all around.
"In pursuit of the comfort and softness that the GEL-NIMBUS series cherishes, the midsole has been made thicker compared to the previous model. You will be able to feel a softer cushioning sensation when you wear and run in it, compared to earlier models."
With a thicker cushioning foam material, you gain an even softer ground feel and ride sensation. However, some runners may worry that an overall 2mm increase in midsole thickness could result in added weight, compromising the shoe's lightness.
There's no need for concern in that regard. The weight of the "GEL-NIMBUS 26" and the "GEL-NIMBUS 27" is nearly the same. Despite the added thickness, the lightness is maintained.
"The material used in the midsole is still FF BLAST PLUS ECO, but the foaming process has evolved, achieving weight reduction without compromising responsiveness and cushioning functionality. Moreover, the outsole has been redesigned to maintain grip and durability while reducing weight. As a result, despite the increase in midsole thickness, the shoe's weight remains almost unchanged from its predecessor."
Increased Breathability with Engineered Mesh Upper
While the previous model employed a knitted upper, this version has introduced engineered mesh that varies knitting techniques and hole sizes to enhance breathability and fit."When running long distances like a full marathon or during extended periods, breathability is crucial for maintaining a comfortable environment inside the shoe. To improve this aspect, we have adopted a mesh upper in this model. Of course, we've chosen materials that retain the characteristic softness that envelops the entire foot, typical of GEL-NIMBUS, and the tongue still features soft knit material."
During long runs, even in winter, feet naturally sweat. In shoes that lack breathability, moisture can build up inside, leading to discomfort and blisters. The enhanced breathability ensures that comfort during long distances has improved considerably compared to before.

Like its predecessor, the heel features PureGEL. PureGEL is approximately 65% softer and about 10% lighter compared to traditional GEL. The now 2mm thicker FF BLAST PLUS ECO midsole combined with PureGEL creates an even softer ground feel and a comfortable ride, making running a pleasant and enjoyable experience.In fact, the "GEL-NIMBUS" series is supported by runners of various levels. Entry-level runners often choose it as their first pair, while top-level athletes utilize it for daily training and recovery after races.
Additionally, it is popular as a shoe for walking and casual use. It fits well into many people's lifestyles.
When trying it on, the first thing that stands out is the excellent fit. The soft fit around the ankles and the moderate hold in the heel are similar to the previous model. The knitted tongue is stretchy and wraps the foot like a sock. The heel features a pull tab, making it easy to slip on.
Once you start running, the high level of cushioning is evident. You hardly feel the hardness of the asphalt beneath you, and there is a noticeable bounce that likely cushions the impact of landing. That said, there's no swaying or instability; you can confidently entrust your feet to these shoes.
