Wearing Outdoor Tech in the City: Why COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL's Down and Fleece Are So Popular

2026.01.16
Established in 1938 in Portland, Oregon, Columbia's story begins with a hat wholesale company called the Columbia Hat Company.
When the founder's daughter, Gert Boyle, took over the business, Columbia grew into a global outdoor brand. She was dubbed the "Mother of Columbia," and her story is well-known.
In this feature, we're spotlighting COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL, an urban line designed to bring comfort to the daily lives of city dwellers by leveraging the outdoor apparel technology Columbia has cultivated throughout its history.
We spoke with Daisuke Ike from the Apparel Merchandising Department of the Product Division at Columbia Sportswear Japan, about the items that incorporate the brand's proprietary materials and technologies.

From the Outdoors to the City: Tech Born from Outdoor Wear

"COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL is a Japan-exclusive label that launched with the Fall/Winter 2016 season. At that time, the trend of incorporating outdoor brand gear into everyday city wear was just taking off, sparking a move to develop products better suited to the Japanese market.
The brand’s roots are in Portland, Oregon, a city celebrated for its lush natural surroundings where residents frequently enjoy the outdoors, and a globally recognized hub of urban charm. Against this backdrop, we develop items that blend function and durability for a wide range of settings, from light outdoor adventures to daily city use. The designs are simple yet meticulously detailed.
In Japan, many places, including Tokyo, offer the unique ability to live in a city while having immediate access to nature. Our concept is to leverage the technology we've honed making outdoor wear to make daily urban life more comfortable. That's the essence of COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL."

The Cove to Dome™ Jacket: A Showcase of Columbia's Winter Tech

Let's take a look at a COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL item perfect for the heart of winter. We'll introduce the "Cove to Dome™ Jacket," which is packed with unique features developed by Columbia.
"When you think of the outdoors, many people might picture a rain jacket, but this jacket features 'Omni-Tech,' Columbia's proprietary waterproof material. This means it's designed to handle not just rain, but snow as well. In addition to being waterproof, it's also highly breathable, a feature that prevents the inside from feeling stuffy.
While it's a down jacket filled with goose down, there's another key feature worth highlighting.
It's 'Omni-Heat™ Infinity,' another of Columbia's proprietary technologies. It uses a heat-reflective system to keep your body heat in, maintaining warmth, while also providing just enough breathability to prevent you from overheating. It's characterized by this dual function of insulation and ventilation, which keeps the climate inside the jacket perfectly comfortable.
The gold dots you see on the lining are the heat-reflective material, while the black background is structured to ensure breathability. It’s been about five to six years since this material was developed, but its predecessor, a silver material called 'Omni-Heat™ Reflective,' was introduced about a decade ago. It was based on the same principle as the emergency blankets used for disaster relief.
From there, it evolved into a dot pattern for superior heat retention, and by adding enhanced breathability, the current 'Omni-Heat™ Infinity' was born. What's more, for COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL, this material is applied to a knit fabric, creating an even more advanced version that includes stretchability."

"The 'Cove to Dome™ Jacket' packs in all of Columbia's winter technology. It's a prime example of functional beauty, taking high-performance features honed in the outdoors and adapting them for everyday wear. Now, let's talk about its design elements in addition to its functionality.
We have a popular, retro-style item called the 'Powder Keg,' which has been around since the 1980s, and this new model takes its design inspiration from that classic piece. While ensuring it has the functionality needed for city life—like waterproof zippers on the front and chest pockets—we've refined it into a more minimalist and sophisticated style."

Reversible Design to Match Your Outfit and the Temperature: The "Hooker Bowl™ Jacket"

Along with the Cove to Dome™ Jacket we just looked at, the "Hooker Bowl™ Jacket" is another winter bestseller. Let's dive into what makes it so special.
"This is a reversible jacket featuring a shaggy fleece side and a soft shell side. The fleece is made from a reduced-microplastic material, showing our commitment to tackling marine pollution. The shell side features our proprietary 'Omni-Shield' water-repellent technology, which effectively sheds water without compromising the fabric's natural feel, making it reliable in light rain. It’s a versatile piece that offers two distinct looks to suit your outfit or the occasion.
We recommend wearing the shell side out with the fleece facing inward for maximum warmth. This allows you to cleverly adapt the jacket's reversible design to changing temperatures."

One of Columbia's Few Wool Offerings: The "Cedar Bend™ Jacket"

Finally, let's look at the "Cedar Bend™ Jacket", one of the rare items in Columbia's lineup to feature wool.
"This is a down coat with a wool-blend outer shell. Like the Cove to Dome™ Jacket we covered earlier, it features 'Omni-Tech' on the outside and 'Omni-Heat Infinity' on the inside.
As an outdoor brand, using 100% wool would be too delicate. So, we blended it with polyester to enhance its durability and developed the fabric from the ground up to meet our 'Omni-Tech' quality standards.
The length is designed to completely cover a suit jacket, and its elegant silhouette makes it a perfect piece of winter outerwear for the business professional."

We've just explored a range of items packed with technologies cultivated and developed over the brand's long history.
By reimagining Columbia's inherently versatile gear under the COLUMBIA BLACK LABEL, the collection achieves a brilliant harmony between sophisticated, minimalist design and proven functionality. It's safe to say this presents a fresh new option for the modern city dweller.
This lineup is a must-have addition to any wardrobe built for an active urban lifestyle.
