A Daypack Reflecting the Opinions of Wheelchair Users: JanSport's "Adaptive Collection"

2024.12.23
JanSport is an outdoor bag brand that was born in Seattle, America, in 1967. Its classic daypack, known for its simple design, high functionality, variety of color options, and reasonable pricing, boasts widespread popularity.
From JanSport comes the "Adaptive Collection," which incorporates the opinions of wheelchair users. The development was guided by long-term communication with individuals who use wheelchairs, ensuring their needs were heard. What kind of technology has been adopted?

A Backpack & Accessory Bag that Anyone Can Use

JanSport values inclusivity, diversity, trust, self-expression, and sustainability. The "Adaptive Collection," which began sales in the U.S. in 2023 and in Japan in the summer of 2024, adds wheelchair-friendly features to JanSport's classic styles.
The products that came forth from listening extensively to wheelchair users are the "Central Adaptive Backpack" and the "Central Adaptive Accessory Bag," both designed to be user-friendly for everyone, including wheelchair users.

"The bags from the Adaptive Collection maintain the characteristic JanSport design while incorporating loops and straps for securing the bags to the wheelchair. We’ve also included pads at the opening to ensure smooth zipper movement and user-friendly buckles, making the design easy for anyone to handle," says Ikumi Shiohara, Brand Manager at Uniglobe, which expands JanSport in Japan.

While there are various types of wheelchairs in terms of design and size, multiple straps are equipped to accommodate all kinds, ensuring functionality not only for wheelchairs but also for strollers, walkers, pet carts, and outdoor chairs.

The "Central Adaptive Backpack" Excels in Storage Capacity

The "Central Adaptive Backpack" is based on the silhouette design of JanSport's iconic daypack, the "Superbreak." It features anchor straps for securing to the wheelchair frame or backrest, straps attachable to the handle, and buckle-closure straps that can be fitted to the headrest.
There is also a pocket to store unused straps, including the shoulder strap, making it less likely to get tangled and ensuring it doesn't become an obstruction.

"It is designed for easy handling with one hand and for smooth opening and closing. The grab handles on both sides are convenient for carrying the bag. Inside, there is a PC sleeve that can accommodate laptops up to 15 inches, a stash pocket on the top for quickly accessing needed items, and stretchy mesh pockets on both sides, showcasing the backpack's excellent storage capacity and functionality."

With a capacity of 21 liters and a weight of 0.5 kg, the material used is 600-denier recycled polyester. Compared to the "Superbreak," it is lower in height, making it easier to access items at the bottom while still attached to the wheelchair. The design considers even the smallest details.

Japanese wheelchair users who have already been using the "Central Adaptive Backpack" have shared feedback like "It’s user-friendly with thoughtful details," "The storage is ample and convenient," and "The design is cute, which is delightful."

The Highly Versatile "Central Adaptive Accessory Bag"

The "Central Adaptive Accessory Bag" features a buckle closure with an adjustable strap that can be secured to the frame of a wheelchair. By utilizing a detachable shoulder strap, it can also be used as a shoulder bag. There is a designated storage space for unused straps, which helps prevent tangling and keeps things tidy.

It also includes a zippered front pocket for quick access, adding to its practicality.
