A Pair of Shoes Representing Mizuno's Tradition & Innovation: Exploring the Details & Charms of "WAVE PROPHECY MOC"

2024.11.09
The "Mizuno" "WAVE PROPHECY MOC" was released in 2023 and sold out immediately. This leather shoe, featuring the latest sole from Mizuno's flagship model "WAVE PROPHECY," is not merely a revival of archived products, but rather a representation of Mizuno's tradition and innovation.
This time, I interviewed Shigeyuki Kunii, the creative director at "mita sneakers," about the unique features and appeal of the "WAVE PROPHECY MOC," which comes in new colors and materials.

Evolving Instead of Simply Reproducing an Innovative Archive Model

The "WAVE PROPHECY MOC," released in the fall and winter of 2023, quickly became a hot topic not only among sneaker enthusiasts but also in the fashion industry. The second version has been released, and regarding how this model came about, Kunii shared the following.
The first version of "WAVE PROPHECY MOC" was released in the fall and winter of 2023 and sold out in an instant. The restocked inventory also sold out quickly (Kunii's personal item)
"Mizuno began its innovative endeavors around 2005 with the release of the signature skate shoes 'Three Feet High' by Yoshifumi Egawa, known as 'YOPPI.' Subsequently, in collaboration with 'Mountain Research,' they launched 'Infinity Moc,' which combined a dress shoe upper with a high-tech sole for touring.

"While hybrid designs like this are common now, it was quite revolutionary at the time and received a lot of attention. Hence, many people are emotionally attached to that model. However, the current 'WAVE PROPHECY MOC' is not a mere reproduction of the past model. It aims to utilize the touring technology from Mizuno's latest model, the 'WAVE PROPHECY' series, extending the inline development from that point."
While boasting the appearance of a leather shoe, it expresses the evolution unique to performance brand Mizuno through its comfort and attention to detail. The second version features seasonal colors and suede materials, each priced at 31,900 yen (tax included)
The project was led by Takeshi Saito from Mizuno. Since it is crafted by Mizuno, they intended to uphold the etiquette and basics of dress shoes while fully incorporating the important functional aspects of sneakers, which marked the beginning of this project.

They Look Like Dress Shoes but Feel Completely Like Sneakers

Due to the commitment to sneaker functionality, Mizuno's technology is packed into this model, and Kunii elaborated on its features.

"The loafer-type upper integrates the tongue and opening, which often leads to the heels slipping out even with good fitting. To prevent this, we incorporated the structure used in Mizuno's running model, the 'Sky Medal' series, ensuring a stylish design while maintaining fit and comfort.
The lining is designed like a sneaker’s opening to prevent heel slippage, which is also noteworthy
"Moreover, as mentioned earlier, the touring features the evolved unit of 'Mizuno Wave' known as 'Infinity Wave.' This is a uniquely developed 'WAVE PROPHECY SOLE' by Mizuno, employing a hollow infinity-structured plate to achieve both stability and cushioning required for the shoe."

The "WAVE PROPHECY SOLE" developed by Mizuno also matches the color of the upper in this model
In terms of functionality, Mizuno's innovative technology is thoroughly integrated. Here, Kunii shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story.

"In the previous 'WAVE PROPHECY MOC,' a pair of white shoelaces was included as a spare. Many might have found this a bit off at first glance. However, this represents our statement that 'we at Mizuno are white belts (novices) in producing dress shoes' and the DIY spirit; hence the decision to include the white shoelaces."
The shoelaces come in the same color as the upper along with white, symbolizing the “white belt” concept, showcasing the subtlety that expresses the essence of Mizuno as a Japanese brand.

The Identity of Sports Equipment Manufacturer "Mizuno" Embodied

This second installment features a suede material that embodies the essence of autumn and winter. Regarding this, Kunii responded:

"Last time, we offered it in a single color of black, but this time, we used a suede material that's more suited for autumn and winter, introducing tones of taupe and brown instead of just black. Although functionally it hasn't changed from last time, the switch to suede and the change in color have significantly transformed the overall impression."

Speaking about the appeal of the "WAVE PROPHECY MOC," Kunii continues:

"Even if it looks good, if a shoe doesn't perform well, people will stop wearing it. Thanks to Mizuno's technology, this concern is well addressed. Although the sole may appear hard at first glance, it provides no stress even when worn for extended periods.
The unique shape of the sole is a distinctive design that emanates from its roots as a sports equipment manufacturer, "Mizuno"
"Nowadays, sneakers are packed with various technologies in their sole foam, making people accustomed to a soft feel, but I believe that when you try on this type of shoe, you'll discover that it actually feels quite comfortable.

"When comparing Japanese brands, 'Asics' and 'Mizuno' are often discussed, but the significant difference lies in their origins. 'Asics' began as a shoe brand, while 'Mizuno' originated as a sports equipment manufacturer.
The combination of plate and EVA in the sole may seem a bit hard at first, but once you wear them, the comfort may surprise you.
"As a manufacturer of various equipment, including high jump take-off boards and prosthetics for runners with disabilities, the insights gained from such experiences contribute to the 'Infinity Wave.' Mizuno excels in developing structures, and this expertise is evident in the sole. I encourage you to give these shoes a try and see for yourself how they feel."

Although they resemble stylish leather shoes, the comfort born out of Mizuno’s pride as a sports equipment manufacturer is something you should experience for yourself.
