New Balance's midsole foam technology was historically built on two pillars: the cushioning-focused Fresh Foam and the energy-return and rebound-focused FuelCell series.But this spring, the brand unveiled a new platform called Infinion alongside the new "1080v15" model. Infinion was developed to help runners go longer and more efficiently, with the "1080" being the first model to feature it. The "Ellipse" has now arrived to take the place of the "1080," which was long the flagship of the Fresh Foam series.

'Ellipse' means 'oval,' and it was developed to embrace all these varied running styles, aiming to be a shoe that seamlessly bridges daily life and the running scene," says Aoi Mamiya, who is in charge of running footwear at New Balance Japan, Inc.

"Ellipse": The Archetypal Cushioning Model
So, as the new face of the Fresh Foam series, what features does the "Ellipse" pack? Let's dive into the technology."From a technology standpoint, the biggest highlight is the Fresh Foam X midsole. This is the same material used in the 1080v13 and v14, known for its exceptional shock absorption and cushioning. The insert (insole) also has a unique 'Ellipse' touch. We’ve used an insert made with the ACL manufacturing process, which is also found in the 1080v15."
"To put it simply, it's a technique for foaming a material that’s typically hard to foam. This process creates an insert with uniform density and a springy, almost 'mochi-like' texture. Using an ACL-processed insert allows the soft, comfortable ride of the Fresh Foam X to be felt directly, delivering a plush sensation right under your foot."
The shoe has an 8mm drop (the height difference between the heel and forefoot). A synergy between the rocker structure and the forefoot rubber shape creates a smooth, rolling sensation at toe-off. Furthermore, the wide base provides an excellent combination of high cushioning and stability.

Another part of the "Ellipse's" appeal is its street-friendly design, making it look more like a lifestyle sneaker than a technical running shoe. But don't be fooled—its stylish upper is packed with performance features."The top layer of the upper features engineered mesh for superior stretch and breathability, while the bottom layer uses a mono mesh that's both breathable and highly durable. In essence, we've placed highly flexible mesh where you need it to move with your foot and stronger mesh in high-wear areas that require more protection."
"Plus, the gusseted tongue, which connects to the upper on both sides, ensures a snug and comfortable fit."
The tongue has just the right amount of padding to reduce pressure on the instep. Reflective details on the heel and the side logo enhance visibility and safety during night runs. It’s a shoe where every last detail has been thoughtfully considered.
