New Balance's "Fresh Foam X 1080" Has Been Updated! Increased Stability for Even More Comfort
New Balance's "Fresh Foam X 1080" is a best-selling daily trainer supporting runners' everyday training, boasting high popularity. It is also widely used as walking, commuting, and casual footwear thanks to its premium cushioning and simple design.
In the previous version v13, the shape of the last was redesigned for better long-distance performance, but in the latest version v14, the midsole shape and upper have been updated. What kind of shoes have been created this time?
A Representative Model from the "Fresh Foam" Series
The original model of "1080" was released in 2011 as a long-distance running shoe with enhanced cushioning and gained high acclaim, particularly in the U.S. market. In 2016, the "1080 v6" adopted Fresh Foam for its platform.New Balance's running shoes are developed on two axes: the "Fresh Foam" and the "FuelCell" series. The former offers the best cushioning to make daily runs more comfortable, while the latter provides the best energy return for race-day shoes. The current "1080" serves as the flagship model of the "Fresh Foam" series, supported by many runners.

An Update Focused on Improving Running Stability
The previous model, "Fresh Foam X 1080 v13," focused on longer runs. The toe spring has been lowered and extended, improving the shoe's performance for long jogging and walking. Additionally, the last was redesigned to minimize quirks, adopting a fit that is not too tight, with a bit of room in the instep area.In this new model, "Fresh Foam X 1080 v14," the shape of the last and toe spring, midsole thickness, and drop (the height difference between the forefoot and heel) maintain the same specifications as v13. So, where exactly have the updates been made?
"The point we focused on in this update is the stability during running. We aim to enhance stability by minimizing the wobble of the center of gravity while keeping the soft ground contact and plush feel typical of the 1080," says Aoi Mamiya New Balance's running footwear department.
"We continue to use Fresh Foam X for the midsole material, just like in the previous model. The midsole thickness remains unchanged, but the side walls have doubled in height compared to v13. This increase enhances stability while achieving a snug fit around the heel area."

Revamped Outsole Design for Center of Gravity Alignment
A significant update in this model is the improved outsole."From landing on the heel to pushing off with the forefoot, the outsole is designed to guide the center of gravity through the center of the shoe. By isolating the central rubber of the outsole, it becomes easier for the center of gravity to rest in the middle."
The outer heel part of the outsole features durable Ndurance material. Furthermore, the central rubber differs in material from the outer rubber, providing a smoother texture that allows for better grip on the ground, supporting the center of gravity to remain centered.

Engineered mesh made from environmentally friendly recycled materials has been adopted for the upper, with the size of the mesh holes adjusted according to the different areas, balancing breathability and support.
"The soft, thick upper feels great and fits the feet gently."

Significantly Increased Stability During Push-off Makes Running Much Easier
Although the upper is soft, it provides sufficient support. The tongue is also thick, allowing for a comfortable fit without excessive pressure on the top of the foot when tying the shoelaces. Many runners are likely to find this comfortable. The current model, "1080 v14," has not changed the material, thickness, or drop of the midsole from the previous version. The main differences are the height of the sidewall, the pattern of the outsole, and the material of the upper, so I thought the ride feel wouldn't change that much; however, I was pleasantly surprised.
The softness upon landing is the same as the previous version, but the stability as the weight shifts from the midfoot to the forefoot feels considerably increased during push-off. The differences in stability become significantly impactful the longer the time and distance of the run. It's undoubtedly a comfortable choice for daily jogging, but it could also be a strong ally in full marathon races aiming for completion.
Additionally, whether it’s due to the improved stability or the guide function that facilitates smooth weight transfer, walking seems easier than in the previous model. It is likely to be more user-friendly as walking shoes and for everyday use.
