The Latest Generation of On's Iconic Model: Unveiling Everything About "Cloud 6"

2025.05.21
Born in Switzerland in 2010, the sports brand On. With the mission to "Ignite the human spirit through movement," the brand delivers premium shoes, apparel, and accessories across running, outdoor, training, tennis, and lifestyle categories.
"Cloud" has become an iconic model representing On. How has the newest generation, Cloud 6, evolved from its predecessor?

Update After About 3 Years. Now Featuring Even Greater Comfort

On’s unique sole unit began when co-founder Olivier Bernhard cut a watering hose and attached it to the sole of his shoes. As a three-time world champion in duathlon (a combination of running and cycling) and a top performer in the prestigious Ironman triathlon, Bernhard struggled with leg injuries throughout his career. Wanting to spare future athletes similar pain, he developed the world-patented CloudTec system.

The first "Cloud" model debuted in 2014. The blend of CloudTec, which allows for soft landings and powerful take-offs, and the speed lace system, which provides a secure fit without the need for tying or untying, generated a huge fan base and made it a bestseller. Now, after roughly three years, the "Cloud" model has been updated again.

With its versatile design and excellent comfort, "Cloud" has always received high praise. The latest in the series, "Cloud 6," might look similar to its predecessor but boasts a number of fine-tuned enhancements, further elevating its comfort and appeal.

Refined Details for an Even More Perfected Finish

"Cloud is our signature daily shoe and truly an icon of our brand. With this update, the shoe has become even more comfortable and easier for everyday use.
"Specifically, the durability and wear-resistance of the outsole have been improved. It may be hard to tell at first glance, but some of the previously separate rubber parts on the outsole (at the forefoot and heel) are now connected, reducing the hollow spaces underneath and increasing the amount of foam used.
"With these subtle structural and shape adjustments, cushioning and stability have both improved, and now the shoe is better equipped to handle excessive foot pronation (a motion where the foot rolls inward upon landing)," explains Kento Kitai from On Japan.

The outsole is now more durable and wear-resistant. The tread pattern has also been updated, contributing to improved stability.
Based on user feedback, On has fine-tuned the subtle elements, boosting cushioning and stability without a major design overhaul. Compared to its predecessor, the transition from landing to takeoff is even smoother and more comfortable.
Additionally, the refined outsole shape makes it less likely for pebbles to get lodged. Improved durability and abrasion resistance mean that users can enjoy their shoes for much longer.

While the last (foot shape) hasn't changed, the redesign of the upper makes this model even easier to slip your foot into—another welcome update for fans.
The opening has been reworked for easier on-and-off.
Of course, environmental considerations are being made as well.

"Lowering environmental impact is something we highly value as a brand, or rather, it’s always on our minds. In the case of Cloud 6, 35% of the upper is made from recycled materials, and the midsole features an ultra-lightweight foam made from bio-based materials, such as waste cooking oil.”

When you actually slip your feet in, you might not feel a dramatic change, but there’s definitely a greater sense of stability. The fit also seems to feel more comfortable than before.

Spotlight on Variation Models

Alongside the update to "Cloud," the new variation models are also worth checking out. One of them is "Cloud 6 Coast." This model lets you fold the upper flat for easy packing, making it perfect for travel or business trips.
Its 2-way design means you can collapse the heel and wear them like slippers—making them just as handy for long journeys by plane or bullet train, or for downtime at your destination. Highly breathable and designed to be comfortable even barefoot, these shoes are all about ease.
The heel structure has also been improved for better support. The sole unit is the same as "Cloud 6," ensuring an ideal balance of cushioning and stability. For people on the move or anyone who leads an active lifestyle, this pair is bound to come in handy.

The upper uses a single-layer engineered mesh, designed to maximize airflow for exceptional breathability, keeping the inside of the shoe comfortable even in hot summer conditions.
