[Not Yet Available in Japan] The Story Behind Parisian Leather Brand Ponctuations Born from the Pandemic
In the stillness of the pandemic, a young designer founded an accessory brand that fuses “quiet beauty” with practicality for everyday life.
“Ponctuations” from Paris draws inspiration from the idea of “adding punctuation to your style,” offering objects that infuse sensitivity into daily life. We interviewed founder Mathieu Desmet to learn about the brand’s philosophy, his attention to craftsmanship, and his future vision.

The Silent Creativity Born from Lockdown
The brand began at the height of the COVID-19 lockdown. At a time when many people were overwhelmed by anxiety and uncertainty, founder and designer Mathieu Desmet spent time deeply reflecting, and says he became more determined to present something meaningful to the world."Being cut off from others actually felt strangely liberating. Instead of looking outward, it became a time to reconnect with my own roots."
Ponctuations’ products, created during these quiet moments, embody functionality, poetry, and Mathieu’s own sincere approach as a designer.

Launching the brand wasn’t a result of some clear-cut goal, but rather a natural extension of accumulated thoughts and feelings. Desmet recalls that "the opportunity came naturally." Having spent years as an in-house designer at "Louis Vuitton," "Marc Jacobs," and "Dior," he’s experienced both the joy of designing within a company and the constraints that come with it.
That’s why, in starting his own brand, he insists it should be genuine from the heart and true to his own sensibility.
"I wanted to create a brand that would embody what I truly aspire to—shaping my feelings directly into the work. Rather than simply making products, I wanted to craft objects that hold personal meaning in daily life."
This stance was Mathieu’s quiet answer to the inner questions sharpened during the unprecedented societal pause of the pandemic.
Accessories as Tools

For Desmet, accessories are far more than decorations—they’re “words within fashion,” subtly reflecting the wearer’s personality and mood, serving as non-verbal forms of self-expression.
While studying accessory design at “Institut Français de la Mode (IFM)” in Paris, his fascination with leather became the cornerstone for exploring minimalistic, functional, and sensuous product design. Through his luxury brand experiences, he engaged with the practicalities of craftsmanship, such as price ranges and reproducibility.
At “Ponctuations,” every product shares a sense of “clarity” and “playfulness.” Within the simple cuts and compositions, there’s always a subtle twist or surprising detail. These designs are intentionally crafted to introduce a lighthearted shift in the everyday, not for showy statement pieces, but to resonate with one’s actions and experiences.
It’s not just about the product itself, but how it genuinely “lives” with you day to day. Even easily overlooked details—like zipper pull shapes or minute strap adjustments—reflect thoughtful design and a distinctive aesthetic.
"I want to create practical tools that naturally fit into the wearer’s lifestyle—not trophies for display, but true companions for everyday life."

True to his words, his designs always respect the human scale. Never showy or excessive, they’re consistently comfortable and quietly memorable. This approach is at the core of “Ponctuations.”
A Brand Philosophy Where Uniqueness & Familiarity Coexist
The pieces Mathieu creates for “Ponctuations” blend minimalism, wit, and the famous French je ne sais quoi—a charm that can’t quite be put into words. The brand’s aim isn’t just to sell products, but to build a community that shares its values and aesthetics.
"At first, I hope the pieces are like quiet punctuation marks in your look—and one day, I want them to become your inseparable everyday companions, bringing a touch of humor and unique flair."
Mathieu’s words show a deep authenticity and a lifestyle sensibility that goes beyond mere fashion.

A sense of responsibility for products and a perspective on sustainability are also important themes for him. Based on the belief that "being able to use something for a long time" is the greatest sustainability, he makes no compromises in choosing materials or in the manufacturing process.
Desme shares his vision: "I don't plan to expand rapidly, but my ideal is a kind of growth where the community gradually grows, one by one." "Ponctuations" is not simply a platform for the designer's personal expression; it's a stage where dialogue is sparked between those who pick up the products.
The future he envisions isn't about standing out, but rather about quietly being by the user's side in their daily life and eventually becoming an irreplaceable presence. "Before you know it, we've spent another day together"—that's the kind of beloved product he quietly aspires to create.
