"Do You Really Need a Night Bra?" – R&D at Wacoal & How to Choose the Right Bra for You

2025.05.15
After a busy day, sleep is the time to recover both body and mind. Many people put extra thought into their bedding or pre-sleep routines to ensure a good night's rest.
But did you know that night bras can also help you achieve comfortable sleep? Some may wonder, "Wearing a bra at night sounds too tight—I wouldn’t be able to sleep," or "Won’t it get too hot and wake me up?" However, for those who actually use them, night bras have become "an item they can't live without."
So how do night bras support your sleep? We asked Risa Sumino from Wacoal Corporation to explain the mechanism behind them.

The Basics You Should Know About Night Bras

"Is there really a point to wearing a night bra?" You might wonder. Why are night bras necessary in the first place?
"Some people may have experienced discomfort or difficulty sleeping when their bust moves around after lying down. That happens because the way gravity affects your bust is completely different during the day vs. when you’re asleep.
"When you’re upright, gravity pulls your bust downward, but when you lie on your back, gravity moves it upward or toward your sides. When lying on your side, gravity shifts it toward the center (the middle of the bust).
"Night bras gently support your bust, keeping it in its proper position. By stabilizing your bust as you sleep, night bras help reduce discomfort and lead you towards a more comfortable sleep."

Daytime bras also provide support, so how are they different?
"Day bras focus on supporting the bust while standing and shaping a beautiful silhouette. Recently, bras come in all kinds of varieties—some use wires, pads, or hooks for strong hold.
"In contrast, the main purpose of a night bra is to keep your bust stable while sleeping, so they’re designed for a lighter, more relaxed fit with less compression."
Night bras have less tightness thanks to the absence of wires, pads, or hooks. "Night Up Bra," starting from 4,400 yen (tax included)
"Some people may be wearing daytime bras to bed, but they’re not designed to support your bust when lying on your back or side. Since their functions differ, it's best to use each bra for its intended purpose."
Day bras and night bras have different roles
Night bras are useful not just for sleep. They're also handy for relaxing at home, like when you’re lounging around.
That said, night bras are meant to keep your bust in place—they don’t provide the firm support you need for daytime activities. Even at home, if you’re sitting or moving about, it’s better to wear a supportive bra.
It's also important to pick the right size. If the size is off, you might not get the support you need, or you could feel discomfort from a bad fit.
Still, finding your size isn’t that hard. If you know your daytime bra size, you can usually select your night bra based on the sizing chart on the official website. When buying, make sure you choose the night bra that fits you best.

Wacoal’s Night Bras: Developed Through Years of Research

As a leading brand in women’s underwear, Wacoal has spent many years researching women’s bodies.
Wacoal began developing night bras in 2002. At the time, a study found that about 30% of women wore their day bras to bed. This prompted them to think, "Don’t we need a bra that better supports the bust during sleep?"
"What’s special about Wacoal’s night bras is their unique design, backed by years of research. Drawing on findings from the Wacoal Human Science Research Center, these bras support your bust gently when you sleep, offering a comfortable fit with minimal tightness."

Looking at the actual product, you’ll notice the focus on both functionality and details. Most Wacoal night bras aren’t meant to be used with pads, as adding pads can actually reduce their ability to keep your bust in the right position while you sleep.
However, some products do have removable pads so you can feel secure when, for example, stepping out to accept a delivery—even in situations where a night bra by itself might feel a bit too minimal.
Because the pads are removable, you can quickly put it on to answer the door for a delivery. "Night Up Bra," 2,970 yen (tax included)
Some products are available in a wide range of sizes from M up to 3L, allowing users to find a fit that suits their individual body shape.
Of course, there is also a rich variety of designs. From simple, understated styles to elegant designs featuring delicate lace, and even colorful variations that lift your spirits, there are plenty of options to suit a wide array of preferences.
Of all the Wacoal night bras, one of the most popular is the cotton-blend "Night Up Bra (Lacy)."

According to Wacoal, the basic features of its night bras do not differ much across products. Since they come in various materials and designs, it's best to choose one in your size that fits your budget and design preferences.

Making Night Bras More Accessible

Interest in night bras has been rising among women in recent years. However, it’s said that the actual usage rate of night bras is still only about 30%.
Common reasons people hesitate to wear night bras include worries such as “they might feel too tight,” “they look hot for summer,” or “I don’t see the difference from daytime bras.” These are typical psychological hurdles that make people hesitant.
In reality though, women who try night bras report very high satisfaction. In a Wacoal survey, 86% of users said they were "satisfied." Many people who try a night bra say things like, “I can’t sleep without my night bra anymore,” or, “I wish I’d started wearing one sooner.”
Mesh fabric is used in the cups, and the base area (under the cups, extending to the back) uses sweat-wicking, quick-dry bare jersey material. "Night Up Bra (Summer)," starting from 5,500 yen (tax included)
Wacoal is also working to make night bras more accessible through various initiatives. One example is the development of summer night bras.
They use highly breathable material in the cup area and sweat-wicking, quick-drying fabric in the base to ensure comfort even during hot weather. The color lineup also features fresh, cool shades for an added sense of refreshment.
If you haven’t tried a night bra yet, Wacoal’s options are a great place to start. You might just find that your perception of night bras completely changes.
