From around 1900 to the 1940s, the city of New York, Manhattan, was in a rush to construct skyscrapers. 'BROOKLYN OVERALL' was born in 1904 as the workwear for the men who were building this bustling city.
Time passed, and now the BROOKLYN OVERALL has been revived in modern Japan. We talked to Youka Iwai, director of BROOKLYN OVERALL at Nicole Co., about the brand's history and revival.

East Coast's BROOKLYN OVERALL & Mid-West's SMITH'S AMERICAN
"During the 40-year period from 1900, famous brands from various regions in the U.S., such as 'Levi's' in San Francisco, 'Lee' in Kansas, 'Carhartt' in Detroit, and 'BROOKLYN OVERALL' in New York, enjoyed huge popularity mostly on the East Coast centered around New York.
"Since the name 'BROOKLYN OVERALL' carried a strong image of the East, when they opened their lines to the west and Midwest areas of the U.S., they created a brand in 1906 known as 'SMITH'S AMERICAN' to cater to these markets. Even in Japan today, it is more common to find SMITH'S AMERICAN in thrift shops."
