'
IL BISONTE', has been steadfastly crafting leather items for over 50 years using Italian leather. They are known worldwide for their high-quality leather products that only get better with use – courtesy of the natural leather aging process.
In this piece, we spoke with Noriaki Nishino, chief planning officer of IL BISONTE's D.C. Business Department, LOOK INC., to learn about the history of IL BISONTE and the world of leather aging.
"The brand was established in Florence, Tuscany, Italy in 1970," Nishino begins. "Our founder, Wanny di Filippo, lived his life like a concurrently traveling hippie before starting the brand. He was deeply influenced by the Native Americans of the American West. The name 'IL BISONTE' means 'The Bison' in Italian, and the brand features bison in its logo.
"A relative of Wanny's partner owned a bag factory, which allowed him to utilize his craftmanship skills. He started creating leather items in that factory and entered the leathercraft business. Those initial offerings were well received, gaining customers and eventually developing into the brand as we know it today. Wanny remains an iconic figure in the brand, even 50 years after its establishment."
