As a brand synonymous with jeans and loved worldwide, "Levi's®" has maintained a long history while continuously offering items that resonate with contemporary trends.
Among the various collections of Levi's®, we are featuring "Levi's® Made in Japan" (hereafter MIJ), and we spoke with Naoko Ogamino, Senior PR Manager at Levi Strauss Japan K.K., about Japan's high-quality craftsmanship.
The Rise in Popularity of Levi's® Made in Japan Worldwide
Currently, Levi's® has various lines such as "SKATEBOARDING," "WORKWEAR," and "LEVI'S® VINTAGE CLOTHING," but what is this MIJ line about?
The MIJ line stems from the past LEVI'S® MADE & CRAFTED® line, which was considered the pinnacle of craftsmanship within Levi's®.
It represents a philosophy of creating the best quality products by bringing together modern technology and the world’s finest craftsmanship, and among these items was the Made in Japan collection that gained immense popularity worldwide, thus spinning out from LEVI'S® MADE & CRAFTED®. The techniques used in fabric creation, sewing, and processing are all enriched with Made in Japan excellence.
Crafting with Selected Japanese Factories in Partnership
Continuing to seek details on the globally renowned MIJ, let's explore how it is produced.
"Paul O'Neill, who directs LEVI'S® VINTAGE CLOTHING, is also responsible for the design direction of MIJ.
"The trademark arcuate stitch on Levi's® jean back pockets, patches, and red tabs can only be handled by contracted factories. In Japan, we have partnered with SAAB Co., Ltd., which manages sewing and processing. Moreover, we work with KAIHARA DENIM for the fabric production of MIJ.
Featuring the Wide Silhouette of the WIDE PLEAT CROP
Now, let's introduce the MIJ items for the autumn/winter 2024 collection.
"This season's collection has already generated buzz around the 'MADE IN JAPAN WIDE PLEAT CROP Medium Indigo MEADOW' pants.
"It features a classic wide-leg silhouette with pleats; although it's typically a stronger street style, it has been refined into a look that can easily accommodate formal styling, making it a versatile choice."
Iconic Utility Tracker Jacket of the Season
Following the highlighted item, let me introduce two iconic pieces that symbolize this season.
"First, I’d like to present a jacket featuring a Japanese-inspired design woven from denim fabric of varying washes on the back. This piece is called 'MADE IN JAPAN Utility Tracker Jacket Medium Indigo INDIGO CREST.'
"Its rich, deep colors showcase a distinctive handmade production process unique to Japan. The silhouette features a boxy fit with ample width and large front pockets, creating a unique piece that stands out."
Handcrafted Woven Details Inspired by 1980s 501®
"Next, we have another iconic piece this season, 'MADE IN JAPAN 80'S 501® Medium Indigo BLU WEAVE,' which features similar woven detailing on the knee as seen on the jacket's back.
"This item is based on the model from the 1980s, characterized by a relaxed wide thigh and a tapered silhouette that narrows towards the hem. The eye-catching woven details are asymmetrical, which adds a distinctive touch."
