Thick-soled running shoes with carbon plates have become mainstream, intensifying the development competition among manufacturers. While many shoes try to differentiate with midsole materials and plate shapes, ASICS presents two top models. For stride-type runners (those with a wide stride), they recommend the "Metaspeed Sky," and for pitch-type runners (those with a small stride and high cadence), the "Metaspeed Edge." These shoes help runners maximize their strengths.
The first "Sky" and "Edge" models debuted in spring 2021. The project team was established in January 2020, indicating a rapid development process.
"At the time the project team was formed, thick-soled shoes were taking over the running scene, putting us in a very tough position. We needed to bring out a 'winning shoe' as soon as possible. Normally, it would take about two years to develop a running shoe, but we couldn't afford that much time," says Shuhei Takemura of ASICS, the project leader.
