Last September, a brand made its collection debut at New York Fashion Week (hereinafter, NYFW). 'Sound of Ikebana', created by Professor/Artist Naoko Tosa of Kyoto University, marries cutting-edge technology with Japanese culture, incorporating designs into clothing via Epson's advanced printing technology.
Crafting art from elements of Japanese culture such as ikebana, Noh, and Kabuki by integrating them with technology marks an interesting evolution of traditional Japanese performing arts. We spoke to Naoko Tosa, who unveiled her second collection at NYFW this February, about the inception and mechanisms of 'Sound of Ikebana' as well as the art born from the fusion of technology and Japanese culture.

Naoko Tosa

Professor/Artist
Born in 1961 in Fukuoka prefecture. Her video art work unveiled in 1985 was added into the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Since then, she has continuously showcased works that blend the latest technology with art and Japanese culture. She launched 'Sound of Ikebana' in 2013 and in September 2023, she showcased the 'Sound of Ikebana' collection at the New York Fashion Week.

The project titled 'Sound of Ikebana', unveiled at NYFW, presented 24 looks in its debut fashion show. The colorful paints changing into various shapes were indeed a form of art.
