Perfect for Any Type of Workout! The Potential of New Balance’s “AC RUNNER”
The new "AC RUNNER" model from New Balance is a performance shoe designed to handle the wide variety of training athletes do daily. From gym workouts, running, and drills to conditioning and travel, what technology is packed into the "AC Runner" to support every scene?
The "AC" in the model name stands for "Athlete Collection," and it is set to become an ongoing series. The "AC Runner" was developed specifically for running, gym workouts, and cross-training.

"Athletes wear basketball shoes for basketball, and cleats for baseball or soccer during games and practices. However, they need a different pair of shoes for off-court or off-pitch training. The AC Runner is a high-performance shoe designed to support the supplementary training athletes do for their sports," says Aoi Mamiya, Running Footwear Representative at New Balance Japan, Inc.

A High-Performance Model Built for Multi-Directional Movement
If you have experience in sports teams, this might be easy to picture. The "AC Runner" was created for athletes to wear during non-sport-specific training sessions. In the US, high schools and universities commonly have training gyms with dedicated athletic trainers on site. In environments like that, there is a high demand for versatile performance shoes like the "AC Runner." Supplementary training varies greatly depending on the sport, spanning a wide range of exercises. That's why the "AC Runner" is engineered not just for forward motion like running, but for multi-directional movement—forward, backward, side-to-side, and diagonally.
"The sole unit of the AC Runner is truly unique. The midsole features a two-layer structure, complemented by reinforcing parts on both sides. At the core of the midsole, we've used Fresh Foam X, which delivers outstanding cushioning.
The portion surrounding the foot uses the same material, but with a slightly firmer density. This dual-density structure ensures excellent stability alongside high cushioning and energy return.
And even though it's a two-layer structure, it's not simply split top and bottom, so the underfoot ride feels remarkably smooth and soft. Furthermore, by placing reinforcement components called Stability Rails on both sides, it prevents excessive lateral movement, giving you a sense of stability and confidence across various motions.
The Stability Rails aren't just rigid side barriers either; they were designed under the 'Data to Design' concept, ensuring full flexibility and lightweight performance."

Upper and Outsole Built for Training Specifications
While the "AC Runner" accommodates lateral and diagonal movements in addition to forward motion, its outsole and upper specs naturally differ from standard running shoes. "The outsole utilizes clear rubber boasting exceptional grip and durability. The tacky rubber combined with an outsole pattern designed for multi-directional movement firmly grips the ground, handling landings from any angle.
For the upper, we used a double mesh that feels soft against the foot and ensures breathability while offering excellent durability. It hits the sweet spot between support and flexibility, allowing you to move comfortably through various exercises."

Trying on the "AC Runner" firsthand, the high level of grip and lateral stability were immediately noticeable. Of course, it's also built for comfortable running, making it extremely versatile across a wide variety of activities.
From treadmills and weight machines to studio training, a single pair comfortably handles it all—making it arguably the ultimate shoe for gym workouts.
In recent years, hybrid fitness competitions combining cardio and strength training—such as HYROX and ATHX—have become a major global trend. There's no doubt the "AC Runner" is a perfect match for these events.

A Design You'll Want to Wear Around Town
Another key appeal of the "AC Runner" is its suitability for everyday wear. Lately, Viz Tech has become a major trend in the sneaker scene. Designs that visually highlight the technology behind cushioning and stability are drawing significant attention, with New Balance models like the "ABZORB 2000" and "ABZORB 2010" becoming major hits. The design of the "AC Runner" incorporates this essence of Viz Tech, already earning intense focus from sneaker enthusiasts.

In the US, it saw an early, limited-quantity release this spring and was quickly picked up by fashion and sneaker outlets. Its functional beauty, powered by cutting-edge technology, is drawing major spotlight. Going forward, this shoe is poised to win over fans in Japan across both performance and lifestyle settings.
