The "Sticks-to-Your-Back" Sensation: Why Able Carry Is Known as the "Zero-Gravity Backpack"
Hong Kong-based backpack brand Able Carry is catching the eye of many business professionals and industry insiders. Its appeal lies in a sophisticated, minimalist design that fits right into the urban landscape and a meticulously engineered structure that masterfully distributes weight.
So, how does an Able Carry backpack feel so light and easy to carry, even when packed with a laptop and documents? To uncover the secret, we sat down with Takafumi Kikuchi from Highmount Co., Ltd., the company spearheading the brand's expansion in Japan.

The Search for a Satisfying Backpack
Launched in 2017, Able Carry evolved from "ZIXAG SHOP," a retail store that imported and sold backpacks from around the world. The Able Carry development story began when its founders started asking a fundamental question: Were they truly offering products that they themselves could be satisfied with?Because they knew the backpack market inside and out, they were able to identify the limitations of existing products and listen to user frustrations. This revealed that the strain we feel on our bodies when wearing a backpack comes not just from the weight of the contents, but also from the bag sagging under the force of gravity.
"What if we could reduce the perceived weight by creating a backpack that doesn't sag?" This idea gave birth to Able Carry's signature "A-Frame," a feature that not only prevents sagging but also delivers a smart, streamlined look.
A Zero-Gravity Sensation!? Here’s How the A-Frame Works
The "A-Frame" is, as the name suggests, a single strap arranged in the shape of the letter 'A.' Much like a baby carrier, it features a structure that envelops the entire backpack, from the bottom to the shoulder straps. This not only supports the base of the backpack from below but also counteracts the tendency for the load's weight to sink downwards.
So, what are the specific effects of the A-Frame?
"It might look like a simple strap, but because it runs from the base all the way to the back panel that sits against your body, it distributes the load efficiently. I think you'll feel a sense of oneness, as if the bag is fused to your back. The bag is less likely to shake during small urban movements, like a light jog, and that's the source of what people call the 'zero-gravity' feel."
Behind its simple structure lies meticulous calculation. To maximize the load distribution effect, every detail matters. On this point, Kikuchi told us about an interesting paradox.
"Actually, the term 'zero-gravity backpack' has taken on a life of its own, leading many to believe the Able Carry bag itself is lightweight, but that's not the case. In fact, it's probably heavier than some competitors' bags. But that weight is essential for withstanding heavy loads. The true magic of Able Carry is the incredible comfort you feel the moment you put it on."

To enhance durability, the backpack is intentionally built to be substantial, and materials like Cordura nylon and X-Pac are used to provide excellent abrasion resistance, tear strength, and protection against scuffs.
"With more customers valuing their personal time, the bags are structured to withstand a variety of scenarios, like heading straight to the gym or out for fun after work."
This is how Able Carry's flagship "Daily Backpack" and its successor, the "Daily Plus," have become so widely embraced.
A Lineup Tailored for Diverse Urban Lifestyles
The secret to Able Carry's popularity lies not only in its A-Frame structure but also in its thoughtful design, which addresses all the little details. The "Daily Plus," with its perfect-for-everyday 21L capacity, is especially praised for its hidden zipper. This independent pocket, located next to the main zipper, is designed to store not only power banks and cables but also items like a water bottle or a folding umbrella.

Additionally, an extra sleeve has been added in front of the main laptop compartment, making it possible to store a tablet or other devices. This, too, is an upgrade that reflects the changing lifestyles of modern city dwellers.

You'll find these handy pockets placed in all the right spots. Alongside the popular Daily Plus, they offer the Max EDC and Max Backpack, perfect for when you need to carry more gear or for a two-to-three-day trip. There's also the Thirteen Daybag, a favorite among women and those who prefer to travel light. Another great feature is the ability to choose a bag that perfectly fits your needs.

A Minimalist Design That's All About Functionality

While Able Carry backpacks are incredibly popular today, the brand actually tested the waters before its official launch. They quietly sold a prototype to validate the high praise for its performance.
"In our ZIXAG SHOP, we deliberately placed the prototype alongside products from other brands without revealing it was ours. Despite the staff not giving it a special sales pitch, many customers picked it up and took a liking to it. We believe they sensed that, 'There’s something different about this backpack.'"
This strategy—to compete on pure functionality by removing the bias of a big brand name—was a resounding success. This philosophy continues today, reflected in a minimalist design that makes the brand logo as discreet as possible.
"We get great feedback from customers who say that the subtle logo makes the bag easy to use for both business and personal life. Women, in particular, appreciate the understated design, which lacks the large logos you often see on sports brands."

This commitment to minimalist design extends to a full range of accessories, including versatile items that can be used as cord cases, packing cubes, or shoe bags. The basic nature of the items means you can arrange and customize them to create your perfect setup.

Born from the challenges faced during their retail days, Able Carry created a technical innovation called the A-Frame and remains dedicated to a design that doesn't scream its brand name. For active users seeking a blend of function and beauty, their products might just be the perfect solution.
