The Key to Preventing Sweat Chills Was "Changing Clothes"! How ASICS Pursued Post-Workout Comfort with "ACTIADAPT" Apparel

The Post-Workout Comfort Pursued by ASICS' "ACTIADAPT" Apparel
ASICS has officially launched "PERFORMANCE LIFE," a new apparel category dedicated to post-workout comfort. At its core lies "ACTIADAPT," a proprietary high-performance technology. Why did a company that has led the world in improving athlete performance step into the new realm of "post-workout" comfort?
We spoke with Mari Tibbets and Yuichiro Wakita, who led the development, to learn about the development process and the story behind their craftsmanship.

Mari Tibbets
ASICS
Born in New York and raised in Nagoya, Japan. She dedicated herself to competitive tennis from an early age and returned to the United States for high school to pursue an athletic career, ultimately competing at the NCAA level. After earning a master's degree in fashion design and gaining experience at numerous American brands including The North Face, Alo, and Fabletics, she joined ASICS in 2015. Currently, she focuses on developing high-performance, technology-driven apparel, striving to create thoughtful products and meaningful innovations that support the human body.

Yuichiro Wakita
ASICS
Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. After graduating from the design department of a fashion college, he gained experience in development and production at a sports apparel OEM manufacturer, followed by fabric and product development at a textile manufacturer. He joined ASICS in 2017, where he worked on apparel and accessory development. Since 2022, he has been in charge of material development, focusing on creating materials that pursue functionality and comfort while valuing the perspectives of both athletes and customers.
Making "Sweat Chills" a Universal Challenge
In the pursuit of post-workout comfort, the team focused on "sweat chills." The phenomenon where post-exercise perspiration cools down and robs the body of heat can significantly impact subsequent physical condition. However, sharing this challenge as a universal concept across global markets was no easy feat.
"'Sweat chills' is a familiar concept in Japan, but in Europe and the U.S., there isn't even a direct word for it, and the perception is completely different," says Tibbets. When she asked overseas team members, "You change clothes after working out, right?", she received an unexpected response: "No, we don't."
That was when the development team proposed a new approach: enhancing comfort by changing clothes after exercising.
"Whether or not you change clothes makes a massive difference in preventing sweat chills. That's why we wanted this product to encourage a new habit of changing after workouts," Tibbets explains passionately.
While approaches to body temperature regulation vary across countries and cultures, ASICS aimed to bridge cultural divides through the clear, actionable solution of "changing clothes."

The Scientifically Derived Optimal Pile Height
The key to preventing sweat chills and enhancing post-workout comfort lies in the pile height on the fabric surface facing the skin, a core element of "ACTIADAPT." After testing numerous length patterns ranging from long to short, the team reached the optimal solution through extensive trial and error.
"We wanted to offer this product year-round, both in spring/summer and fall/winter. It couldn't look hot at first glance, but retaining a soft, cloud-like feel was a must. We found the perfect length that maintains both," says Wakita.
If the pile is too short, it cannot adequately manage sweat; if it is too long, it feels overly warm. This finely tuned raised pile structure quickly absorbs and disperses sweat, maintaining an ideal layer of air between the skin and the fabric.
The raised pile structure on the inner surface becomes clearly visible when packed. It rapidly absorbs and disperses sweat to maintain comfort.
This choice was backed by testing at the ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS). They produced multiple pile-length samples and evaluated them comparatively across texture, appearance, physical properties, and functionality. Based on those results, they tested fabric with the current pile length and confirmed convincing effectiveness.
Furthermore, they adopted "modified cross-section hollow yarn" for the material. The hollow structure traps air to regulate temperature, while the modified cross-section rapidly disperses moisture. Science thoroughly backed this sensory sense of "comfort."
"I Want to Make a T-shirt Out of This"—The Unreasonable Request That Turned Functional Fabric into Everyday Wear
Due to its special structure, the fabric used in "ACTIADAPT" was originally intended for lining jackets and similar garments. However, Tibbetts overturned that common knowledge with a single line: "I want to make a T-shirt with this fabric."
"If we were making a T-shirt, it needed firmness and body, and it was non-negotiable that it had to look great on its own," recalls Wakita.
This "unreasonable request" evolved a functional fabric into a product viable for everyday wear. During prototyping, comfort ratings were so high that some team members wore the samples every single day.
On the other hand, a challenge remained: its comfort was hard to appreciate without trying it on. That is why the team eliminated the stiff, technical feel typical of sportswear, pursuing a clean, simple design that anyone would want to wear every day.

More Than 3x Cheaper Than Competitors: The Relentless Effort Behind a Game-Changing Price
Featuring high-performance materials, "ACTIADAPT" achieved prices of 19,800 yen for the blouson and 9,570 yen for the T-shirt (2026 Autumn/Winter models).
"There are items from other brands using similar fabrics, but they cost more than three times as much. Even if a fabric is amazing, if it's too expensive, most people won't get to experience it," says Tibbetts.
"We want to bring proper conditioning to everyone." Driven by this earnest desire, the team refined the design to boost production efficiency and negotiated repeatedly with suppliers.

"It's like 'every little bit adds up,'" says Wakita. He visited the factory repeatedly, continuing negotiations with requests like, "Could we tweak this just a bit more?"
These cumulative efforts ultimately allowed them to deliver high-performance materials at an accessible price point.
Not Just for Post-Workout! How "ACTIADAPT" Supports Everyday Comfort
Packed with the team's passion, "ACTIADAPT" evolved into apparel that seamlessly fits into everyday life beyond post-workout recovery. Wakita wears it daily himself, noting that during hot summer commutes when stepping from the heat into an air-conditioned train, the chill from sweat on his back became "significantly better."
It is used in a wide range of settings beyond post-exercise, including commuting and sleeping. This is the result of crafting a minimal design that tones down the athletic look, making it easy to wear in daily life.
Wakita compares this comfort to ASICS' signature shoe, the "GEL-NIMBUS."
"Just like the NIMBUS in footwear, it takes what used to be uncomfortable and brings it right into your comfort zone."
Born from confronting the challenge of post-exercise sweat chill through extensive material design and testing, the "ACTIADAPT" series offers functionality that supports comfort in everyday life, far beyond just after sports.
