Not Yet in Japan: How Belgian Bag Brand ANNALOCH Is Shaping the Future of Craftsmanship with "Recycled Leather"
ANNALOCH is a bag brand on a journey between tradition and innovation. At the heart of its design and philosophy lies the story of its two founders, Anna and Lars, who hail from diverse cultural backgrounds. Born from a chance encounter at Loch Ness, the brand masterfully blends Eastern and Western aesthetics, creating timeless bags that unite craftsmanship and sustainability.
We had the pleasure of speaking with co-founder and brand strategist, Lars Sven Klaver.

Weaving Tradition and Innovation: The Future of Leather Craft
ANNALOCH is the brainchild of two creators from vastly different worlds: Anna and Lars. Since 2008, Anna has dedicated her career to being a leather artisan, nurturing a profound passion for traditional techniques. Lars, meanwhile, is a pioneer who introduced North American longboard culture to the South of France, launching his own brand before gaining marketing experience at Burberry in London. After expanding his focus to fashion accessories, he met Anna, and in 2013, they co-founded ANNALOCH in Antwerp.
"Our journey to Loch Ness was the catalyst for starting the brand," Lars recalls.
"Witnessing Anna's profound dedication as a leather artisan—her focus, precision, and love for the material—convinced me of what ANNALOCH should aspire to be."
From the outset, their roles naturally fell into place, forming an ideal partnership: Anna oversees art and craft, while Lars spearheads brand strategy and storytelling. Their unwavering philosophy is to bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern fashion, resulting in timeless designs that are both practical and refined, seamlessly fitting into daily life.

By viewing bags as "tool-based accessories," the brand perfects practicality with lightweight leather and minimal hardware, then overlays it with the aesthetics of craft. This creates ANNALOCH’s signature "bridge between tool and beauty."
More than a decade later, this philosophy remains the brand’s cornerstone. With "functional beauty" as a core concept, bags are treated not as mere ornaments but as "tools," designed for ease of use, ample storage, privacy, and security.
"Based on the belief that a bag should be a tool-based accessory, we obsess over minimal yet functional details, such as lightweight leather, minimalist hardware, and internal structuring."
At the intersection of tradition and innovation, ANNALOCH thrives on the exquisite balance between craftsmanship and brand strategy.
A Unique Aesthetic Born from the Fusion of Eastern and Western Cultures
ANNALOCH's designs spring from the founders' distinct cultural backgrounds. Lars grew up in Belgium, where his mother's influence exposed him to the rationality and structural beauty of the Bauhaus movement."My childhood environment, from our home's interior to its lighting and chairs, was shaped by the design philosophy of Germany's Bauhaus movement. Later, my time living in the South of France and studying in Canada helped me develop a more global perspective."

Anna, in contrast, grew up in a lush Chinese village and has an unconventional background, having pivoted from medicine to design. It is said she cultivated a keen sensibility amid the scent of the earth, the colors of plants, and the quiet balance of nature. This very harmony with the natural world forms the core of ANNALOCH's design language.
"Our design language was born from the fusion of the Eastern aesthetic of yin and yang with the Western Bauhaus principle of 'form follows function,'" says Lars. The brand's essence lies in a quiet harmony—a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures that blends natural beauty with the warmth of handwork, and structural discipline with aesthetic restraint.
For instance, one collection, inspired by a rattan basket hand-woven by Anna's grandmother, reinterprets a traditional material through a modern, minimalist lens, perfectly embodying this fusion of aesthetics. It is this combination of Eastern sensibility and Western philosophy, coupled with the founders' shared "deep love for nature," that underpins the serene, timeless beauty of ANNALOCH.

A New Challenge: Innovating Sustainability
Another cornerstone of the brand's philosophy is a profound respect for the environment. In 2020, when the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, ANNALOCH was also forced to scale back its operations. During this pause, the founders asked themselves a critical question: As a fashion brand, how could they better fulfill their long-term responsibility to the planet?

"The turning point was discovering an EU-certified recycled leather, reconstructed from scraps of animal hides without any adhesives. This material was originally intended for shoes, but we re-engineered it with the perfect thickness and structure for our bags.
This innovative material became the core of our 'RCL' collection, which features a minimalist design free of excessive ornamentation. We thoroughly minimized our environmental footprint by using linings made from recycled PET bottles and keeping packaging to an absolute minimum.
Lars emphasizes, "The launch of 'RCL' was more than just product innovation; it marked a pivotal moment where we cemented sustainability as a long-term philosophy for the brand."
This dedication to harmonizing with nature and creating products to be cherished across generations paints a new vision for the future—one where craftsmanship and sustainability go hand in hand.
Pursuing high quality while minimizing environmental impact is no simple feat. Recycled leather isn't necessarily cheaper than conventional leather, and as he notes, "Some consumers mistake recycled leather for a cheap synthetic alternative, but this is a misconception that will take time and education to overcome."
By blending traditional techniques with innovative materials, ANNALOCH champions a form of sustainable fashion designed to be cherished for years to come. This is perfectly encapsulated in Anna's own words: "I want to create a bag that my daughter can still use decades from now."

"What we hope for in the fashion industry is a shift away from overproduction and mass waste, and a move toward re-evaluating beauty and value on a more relaxed timeline," Lars concludes. "We're aiming for a gentle, sustainable evolution."
Looking ahead, ANNALOCH will continue to weave together Eastern and Western aesthetics and technologies, deepening its commitment to the environment and shaping a future of manufacturing truly worthwhile products.
