The Long-Selling Stability Favorite Gets a Comfort Upgrade! Exploring the Evolution of the ASICS "GEL-KAYANO 33"

2026.07.07
Since its debut in 1993, the ASICS "GEL-KAYANO" has been a beloved favorite among runners worldwide. It provides top-tier support for a smooth stride and stability to prevent unsteadiness, helping countless runners cross the finish line of full marathons.
In recent years, shoes inspired by the "GEL-KAYANO" have also become a major hit in the fashion world, making a significant impact.
The latest in the series, the "GEL-KAYANO 33", incorporates a new stability technology called FLUIDSUPPORT. So, what exactly is FLUIDSUPPORT? And what kind of evolution has this reimagined "GEL-KAYANO" undergone?
The "GEL-KAYANO 33," featuring a redesigned sole unit, is priced at ¥22,000 (tax included).

FLUIDSUPPORT: Balancing Stability and Comfort

The "GEL-KAYANO 30," released in 2023, unveiled the innovative 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM. This system has been a staple in the series up through the previous model, the "GEL-KAYANO 32."
The 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM is a functional structure developed by studying how a runner's movements change with increasing mileage. By creating a 3D-sculpted midsole that widens from the inner heel to the midfoot, it curbs excessive inward roll (overpronation) during a run. Placing a soft, high-rebound foam part that juts out at the arch provides the stability needed when fatigued, along with a comfortable feel.
Furthermore, the heel features a precisely engineered slope, ensuring a smooth forward transition during heel contact.
Inheriting the philosophy of the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM, FLUIDSUPPORT is a new stability feature developed through extensive research and testing to harmonize with the body's natural movements.
"The 'GEL-KAYANO 33' is a model that aims to balance stability and comfort. Regarding FLUIDSUPPORT, it shares the same principle as the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM of providing support by considering changes in a runner's form due to fatigue. The design of a wider midsole from the inner heel to the midfoot also remains unchanged," says Yoshiya Tsuruishi from the Product Planning department at ASICS Japan Corporation.
The biggest shake-up is in the midsole's construction. While the previous model used FF BLAST PLUS throughout the midsole with a soft, high-rebound foam part at the arch, the new version features a dual-layer structure. The upper layer uses the soft and responsive FF BLAST MAX, while the lower layer employs the slightly firmer and more stable FF BLAST PLUS.
A key feature is that the balance of foam materials varies by section. The inner heel has a larger volume of FF BLAST PLUS, while the inner midfoot has a larger volume of FF BLAST MAX. Towards the forefoot, the lower FF BLAST PLUS layer splits into two, with only FF BLAST MAX in the center. It is precisely this construction that contributes to the "fluidity" of the support.
This structure provides smooth, continuous support throughout the entire foot motion, delivering an exceptionally stable stride from heel strike to toe-off.
FLUIDSUPPORT features a distinctive dual-layer midsole. In the image, the white section is FF BLAST PLUS, and the green section is FF BLAST MAX.
The forefoot contains a higher proportion of FF BLAST MAX.
"With the 'GEL-KAYANO 32,' the idea was that when your form broke down from fatigue, the responsive foam part on the inner midfoot would provide support. In this new model, however, the thick cushioning material on the inner midsole and the shoe's overall shape work together to naturally support the runner's foot, promoting a comfortable and smooth stride.
While this model focuses on a comfortable and smooth ride, its stability is by no means compromised; it remains just as stable as its predecessor."
As with its predecessor, the heel features built-in PureGEL technology for shock absorption. Additionally, the stack height (total sole thickness) is 40mm at the heel and 32mm at the forefoot (for a men's 27.0cm size).
The ratio of FF BLAST PLUS to FF BLAST MAX is skillfully engineered for different parts of the shoe.

An Outsole Pattern for a Smoother Ride

The outsole's pattern and material placement have also been redesigned.
"The outsole features our proprietary HYBRID ASICSGRIP, which combines two distinct rubber materials. We've used the highly abrasion-resistant AHARPLUS on the heel, toe, and outer sections. For the medial side and the center of the forefoot, we've employed ASICSGRIP, which delivers outstanding grip across various road conditions.
Additionally, the line structure, created by the curved placement of the inner rubber, controls the sole's flexibility for a smoother ride. Furthermore, the oval-shaped design in the forefoot flexibly adapts to the foot's movement, providing even softer cushioning."
The outsole supports a smooth ride and boasts excellent durability.

A Stability Model for a New Era

Running in the GEL-KAYANO 33 offers a brand-new sensation, unlike any previous GEL-KAYANO model.
You don't get that typical sensation of arch support found in traditional stability models, yet there's no worry about overpronation (the tendency for the heel to roll excessively inward upon landing). While the stability during landing—especially around the heel—is impressive, the shoe doesn't feel stiff or restrictive. The forward transition is seamless, and thanks to the FF BLAST MAX, the toe-off is incredibly soft. It made for an exceptionally comfortable run.
While its predecessor, the GEL-KAYANO 32, was also a stability model that successfully balanced stability and comfort, the GEL-KAYANO 33 takes that comfort to the next level, truly earning its title as a stability model for a new era.
The GEL-KAYANO 33 becomes more dependable the longer your run. It’s a top recommendation for anyone who wants to keep running with confidence.
