Is a scratch on a leather bag a mere flaw, or is it a cherished mark of daily life? For the Oslo-based Norwegian brand Cala Jade, it represents the beauty of a story told through time.
Inspired by the tranquil nature and architectural splendor of Scandinavia, their designs make an ally of time, etching memories into every detail of the leather's surface. We spoke with co-founder Tina Cecilie Skaar, who shared the story behind the brand’s inception, her design philosophy, and her admiration for Japanese aesthetics.

A Brand Story Born in a City of Little Light

Oslo's winters are long and its daylight hours are few. But it was in this very limited light that "Cala Jade" came to be.
The story begins on the first day of design school, tracing back to a chance encounter between Elise and Tina on a subway train. The friendship that grew from that moment would eventually blossom into a brand.
In 2007, "Cala Jade" was born in Oslo, founded by co-founders Elise Kläve Ugland and Tina. Their vision is a design philosophy that champions the warmth of handwork and the beauty of aging. They continue to meticulously create bags and accessories that evolve and deepen in character alongside the life of their owner.
This passion for craftsmanship, they say, had been brewing within each of them long before they met. "I've been drawn to artisanal crafts since I was a child," Tina begins gently.
"I found a kind of magic in the texture of materials, the feeling in my hands, and the very act of 'making' itself. As a student, I was captivated by handicrafts like macramé and weaving, constantly thinking about how to make the most of natural materials. When I encountered leather, I was instantly smitten by its flexibility, durability, and its ever-changing character over time."

The very first bag she ever made was upcycled from old pieces of leather passed down from her family. The leather, which had softened over many years, was said to be etched with the imprints and memories of hands. As Tina cut, wove, and stitched the material, she listened closely to the "story of time" it had to tell.
"A bag is not merely a functional object; it’s a companion for life," she explains. "It absorbs the warmth of its owner and its character evolves over time. That is the very beauty of leather that we absolutely adore."
Weaving the Warmth of Craft with the Precision of Minimalism
"Cala Jade" was born from a shared passion for craftsmanship and leather. When asked about the origin of the brand name, she smiles and says, "In a way, it was a happy accident.""We came up with it intuitively, almost like naming a child or a pet. 'Cala' represents serenity and purity, while 'Jade' was inspired by a jade necklace I found on a trip to London. When we combined the two, they created a sound that was both calm and distinctive. It felt like a timeless name, yet one that carried a breath of fresh air."
This resonance is a perfect reflection of their design philosophy. The unique aesthetic of "Cala Jade" emerges where intuition and contrast intersect. Their leather is carefully sourced from sustainable tanneries in Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Each piece is then finished by hand by skilled artisans at a workshop in India that specializes in leather weaving.

Inspired by Scandinavian nature, architecture, and art, the designs are structural yet feel organic, featuring a characteristic harmony of straight lines and curves. This dedication to materials and craftsmanship is also reflected in how the designers perceive the colors and textures of the natural world.
"I love collecting stones from the mountains and the coast," Tina shares. "The colors and textures created by nature have a depth that words can’t fully express. Maybe it’s that quiet beauty that breathes life into our designs."
What they value above all is "the beauty that is nurtured through use." "The Scandinavian landscape has a beauty that embraces time," she says. "The bark of a birch tree, stones eroded by the wind, the light of a long winter—all are perfected through the process of aging."
The brand's signature "Misu" bag is the crystallization of this philosophy. Its hand-woven design, inspired by traditional Scandinavian birch bark weaving, mirrors the rhythm and breath of the artisan's hands.

"There’s a unique tranquility in the art of hand-weaving. The focus, the breath, and the passage of time. A single bag comes to embody the very life of its artisan."
The warmth of craftsmanship and the precision of minimalism. The delightful tension and harmony that exist between them are the very essence of 'Cala Jade'.
Discussing Ideas Over Sake
At the heart of 'Cala Jade' flows a philosophy of 'making time an ally.' For them, sustainability is not a trend or a duty, but a natural consequence of choosing beauty—it's their own personal philosophy."Creating pieces that are cherished for a lifetime. That, for us, is the truest form of sustainability."

They select durable materials, avoid overproduction, and cherish the ability to repair their items. Rather than chasing trends, they create bags that mature over time—a process Tina describes as 'slow evolution.'
This mindset eventually resonated with the culture of far-off Japan. "There is something in Japanese aesthetics that deeply resonates with us. The reverence for materials, the passion for handiwork, and the beauty found in tranquility. In fact, we’ve even discussed collection ideas over sake at an izakaya in Oslo."
Tina says her dream is to one day journey to Japan with her family and experience the country's regional architecture and crafts firsthand. To her, Japan is an ideal place where the spirit of craftsmanship and poetic tranquility coexist. While considering expansion into the Japanese market in the near future, her eyes light up as she says, "We want to grow the brand patiently, sincerely, and over time."
"We have grown in the space between change and constancy. While learning from our experiences and mistakes, we have always protected the core spirit of our brand: a reverence for materials and a love for handiwork."

Tina concluded the interview with this reflection. A bag whose leather molds to your hands, its color deepening and changing as if to embrace the light. It is in this celebration of change—not as flaws, but as 'poetry'—that the 'beauty born from age' that 'Cala Jade' champions comes to life.
Born as if breathing in the quiet, each bag eventually paints a landscape that is intertwined with its owner's life. The memories etched by the warmth of hands are carried into the future, ready to weave a new story.
