Why CAMCO's Quintessential American Basic Shirts Are a Top Choice

2025.10.21
Founded in Arkansas in the 1950s, "CAMCO" initially operated as a factory manufacturing apparel for major American department stores like SEARS and J.C. PENNEY.
The company later became a supplier for the U.S. military. By the 1970s, its reputation for high quality led it to sew for various American brands, and it eventually launched its own line as a factory brand. To delve into the world of CAMCO, which continues to captivate fans with its classic early American aesthetic, we sat down with Norio Nakayama, the manager of MAINE, a veteran American casual shop located in Tokyo's Jimbocho, Kanda.

The Secret Is Recreating Vintage Flannel Fabric

"CAMCO was introduced in Japan in 1998," Nakayama explains. "Its most iconic item is, by far, the flannel shirt that put the brand on the map. Just one look at this shirt reveals the core appeal of CAMCO.
This flannel shirt showcases distinctive details like a diagonally cut 'bias pocket' and premium 'dish buttons,' yet the overall design is simple and timeless. It's truly a piece built to be loved for years to come."

"CAMCO is most dedicated to recreating vintage flannel fabric. Since off-the-shelf fabrics just don't offer the right authenticity, the brand commissions a specialized factory to dye the yarn and weave the material from scratch, ensuring a no-compromise approach.
The dense, heavyweight flannel is CAMCO's signature. To ensure the fabric develops a richer character with wear, they even intentionally replicate subtle weaving inconsistencies. The check patterns are primarily based on classic designs from the 1960s to the 1980s, with a regular rotation of simple, versatile patterns that are easy to style."

The Indispensable Chambray Shirt for American Casual Aficionados

Alongside their famous flannel, the chambray shirt stands as another of CAMCO's flagship staples. Let's take a closer look at this essential piece.
"Much like the flannel shirts, these have a perfectly tuned vintage vibe while retaining signature CAMCO features like dual chest flap pockets and classic white four-hole plastic buttons. The stitch work is also meticulously executed, closely resembling the detailing from the 1980s.
The fabric is 100% cotton, a plain weave using colored warp threads and white weft threads, with intentional weaving irregularities to enhance its character. The more you wash it, the more its personality emerges, allowing you to enjoy unique fades and wear patterns. A classic chambray shirt with this kind of vintage feel is a rare find, making it an absolute must-have for any American casual enthusiast."

The 'CAMCO OUTDOOR' Line: A Commitment to 'Made in USA'

Now that we've explored their classic shirts, let's turn to this season's top recommendations.
"CAMCO offers more than just shirts," Nakayama notes. "This season, the standout items are from our 'CAMCO OUTDOOR' line, which is proudly Made in USA. I'd highlight three pieces: the 'Cascade Down Jacket,' the 'Cascade Down Vest,' and the 'Mountain Parka.'
American-made down products are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. In this climate, we're thrilled to release these items that capture the 1970s spirit while staying true to our commitment to 'Made in USA' craftsmanship."

"The fabric is the classic 60/40 nylon, a staple in outdoor wear since the 1970s. For the down jacket and down vest, we even sourced deadstock 60/40 nylon. The insulation is a generous filling of 700-fill-power [1] real goose down.
Additionally, the mountain parka is based on the design of a double-shell parka released by a certain American company in 1976. While this one isn't made from deadstock fabric, it also utilizes the same durable 60/40 nylon. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted, one by one, by skilled American artisans."

MAINE: The Veteran American Casual Select Shop Dedicated to Simplicity and Durability

While we got a look at some of CAMCO's top picks, their lineup is incredibly diverse. It features everything from hickory, light flannel check, and patchwork "work shirts" and "work vests" to "denim pants." MAINE, the shop behind CAMCO, boasts a long and storied history as one of Japan's original American casual select shops, and we're excited to dive into their story.
"MAINE first opened its doors in 1988 in the Surugadai-shita area of Ochanomizu, Tokyo, followed by our current Jimbocho location in 1991. We've always been rooted in American casual style, and we carefully select brands that embody the spirit of 'Shitsujitsu-Goken.' This Japanese phrase captures the essence of being 'unpretentious, earnest, and robust in both mind and body.'"
"Beyond CAMCO, we also stock a wide range of select brands and our own original brand, 'BAGGY.' At MAINE, we believe it's not just about the item itself but the story behind the brand. CAMCO, for instance, is steeped in the history and manufacturing traditions of military and workwear. Through our product lineup, we aim to share these compelling brand narratives with our customers."

[1] Fill power is a unit that measures the loft or 'fluffiness' of down. A higher fill power number indicates that the down traps more air, resulting in superior insulation and higher quality. It also means that less down is needed to achieve the same loft, which makes the final piece of apparel lighter.
