Is That Foot Fatigue Caused by "Floating Toes"? A Legacy Niigata Company Champions a Foot Health Revolution with 'Caresoku'.
We want people to walk on their own two feet, no matter their age. Did you know there's a sock created with this very wish in mind? When you think of socks, you probably look for something stylish and affordable. But what if a simple pair of socks could directly impact your health? You’d naturally want to choose the best ones available.
That's why we're shining a spotlight on 'Caresoku (CARE:SOKU),' a sock developed by the Niigata-based company Yamachu Co., Ltd. Under the tagline, 'For tomorrow's feet,' they developed socks with health at their core. And their remarkable effectiveness is even backed by science.
We sat down with the brand manager, Manabu Tsuboya, to discuss the company's philosophy and get the full story on 'Caresoku,' a sock with a revolutionary new design.
PROFILE
Manabu Tsuboya
Born in Kamo City, Niigata Prefecture, in 1982.
Marketing Division, Yamachu Co., Ltd.
CARE:SOKU Brand Manager.
Inspired as a child by a relative's praise—'Yamachu makes incredible socks'—he dreamed of one day joining the company.
He was deeply impressed by the sensation of doing something good for his body the first time he wore Caresoku.
Today, he passionately dedicates himself to the research and development of 'socks that contribute to health'.
Who Exactly Is a Sock's Customer?

Founded in 1958, the company’s story began with a single sock-knitting machine. Starting out with door-to-door sales before expanding into mail-order—a business model that continues to this day—they have long focused on creating products that address foot-related concerns. Their long-selling items, such as “Ashiura Bijin” (Beautiful Soles) and “Kenko Ashikubi Warmer” (Healthy Ankle Warmer), have earned enduring popularity.
Then, about a decade ago, as their 60th anniversary approached, a new project kicked off with the goal of returning to the company's origins.
"Throughout our time in the sock business, we started to rethink who exactly we were making socks for. The answer that came from within our team was a revelation: 'Our customer is the foot itself.'"
"With that in mind, we began hosting foot study groups with outside experts. What we discovered was the sheer number of foot problems affecting people today."
"Our lifestyles have changed, moving from traditional tatami mat floors to hardwood, which means we walk barefoot less and wear shoes more. We started to wonder if socks could be the solution to the various problems this shift has caused. That was the beginning of 'Caresoku's' development."
This wasn't just about creating another sock. It was a game-changing move to position socks within the healthcare space, shattering old-fashioned norms.
A Deep Dive into Foot Research and Measurement

Developing 'Caresoku' first required a deep understanding of the current state of the modern foot. To achieve this, the team held countless study groups, listening to experts and relentlessly collecting foot data. They even brought in cutting-edge 3D scanners to perform comprehensive analyses of foot structures, such as the arch.

This research revealed a surprising fact: many people today suffer from 'floating toes.' This condition creates poor balance compared to having all five toes firmly planted on the ground, leading to foot fatigue and an increased likelihood of pain in the heels and toes. The research also showed that calluses are often caused by a deterioration of the foot's natural arch function.
With these diverse issues brought to light, 'Caresoku' was meticulously engineered to solve them all.
A Dramatic Change in the Foot's Contact Area

To tackle this problem, "Caresoku" was born, positioned as part of the "Totonou" (Align) series. There are also other lines like "Uruosu" (Moisturize) and "Atatameru" (Warm), allowing customers to pick the perfect pair for their needs.
The level of dedication behind this project is clear from the involvement of Professor Kaoru Abe from Niigata University of Health and Welfare, a leading authority in Japanese foot care, in the development of the "Totonou" series.
Eager to see just how revolutionary this product was, I took a look. At first glance, it looks just like a normal pair of socks. It's a five-toe sock, but with a design where only the inside is separated. The heel has some cushioning, but you might be thinking, "Is that it?" But this is where the secret of "Caresoku" is hidden.
"The 'Totonou' series from 'Caresoku' is unique because while it's a five-toe sock on the inside, the toes are connected on the outside. You might be wondering what makes it different from regular five-toe socks.
The difference is especially clear for people with bunions. In standard five-toe socks, each toe pocket is separate. This allows for greater toe movement, but it doesn't have a corrective effect. 'Caresoku,' on the other hand, works to guide your toes into their natural, correct position.
What's more, experiments have clearly shown a significant difference in the ground contact area of the toes because they are linked. This not only gives you the sensation of firmly gripping the ground but can also help resolve issues like ingrown toenails."

Listening to the explanation, you might start to wonder if a pair of socks can really deliver such incredible results. But the claims are backed by solid scientific data.
Checking the data, it's clear that the foot's ground contact area increases significantly when wearing "Caresoku". You can also see how, for those with bunions, the socks reliably guide the toes into a more natural position.

But the attention to detail doesn't stop there.
"We've added a honeycomb cushion to the heel to absorb impact on landing, and the transverse arch support for the forefoot provides just the right amount of snugness.
To perfect these features, we created numerous samples and had them tested by a wide range of people."
By using the 3D scans and sole pressure measurements mentioned earlier, the company could move beyond subjective feedback like "my feet feel a bit better" and provide objective data. This is what makes "Caresoku" a sock with truly proven effects.
The Pinnacle of Yamachu's Technical Skill
Often, the secret to high-performance products lies in the fibers—a special yarn structure or mineral infusions that produce the desired effect. But Yamachu took a different path. They are competing on the very structure of the sock, achieved through their mastery of knitting technology."We introduced a 'Whole Garment' knitting machine, which allowed us to create a much more complex structure. This technology was absolutely essential for 'Caresoku.'
A standard pair of socks can be produced on a circular knitting machine in about three minutes, but a pair of 'Caresoku' takes about 70 minutes. Even operating 24/7, we can only make about 20 pairs a day. We're proud to say it's a product filled with that much dedication."

As Tsuboya mentioned, the data-backed effectiveness and high reliability of "Caresoku" are further proven by its "Doctors Me" seal of physician recommendation. This certification is granted after evaluation by over 100 doctors, combined with their survey responses. As a result, the product is now gaining attention at medical conferences and clinics.
Finally, I asked about their vision for the future.
"We hope 'Caresoku' encourages more people to think about their foot health. We want them to realize that socks aren't just something to throw on, and it's not about 'getting a good deal on a three-pack.' We want them to know that there are real standards for choosing the right pair.
Every time we hear from someone that 'Caresoku' has helped ease their foot troubles, even just a little, we feel so glad we developed them. We'll continue to create products that people will love for years to come."
For the sake of your healthspan and to find freedom from foot-related woes, why not add "Caresoku" socks to your list of options? Once you try them on, you'll be hooked on the feeling.
