Launching Japan-exclusive Items with their Second Foray
Cath Kidston was founded in 1993 in Notting Hill, UK. It started with the idea of adding fun to daily life, by offering bags and tableware adorned with hand-painted prints. The first store in Japan opened in Daikanyama in 2006. It quickly gained attention after landing, leading to a huge boom with long lines at stores almost every day. At that time, no Japan-exclusive items were available, and imports were predominantly sold.
While it grew into a beloved brand in Japan, it withdrew in April 2020 due to management issues. However, just four years later, it made a successful comeback. What factors contributed to this resurgence?
"Even after we withdrew, there was a strong popularity, with people purchasing via parallel imports. Additionally, we were able to secure exclusive import sales rights and master license rights in Japan, which was a significant reason for our return," shared Tiara Simmons from StylingLife Holdings Inc.

"When it comes to tote bags, the important points differ between Japan and the UK. For instance, when choosing a tote bag in Japan, many consider if it can hold a lunch box or a PET bottle, but there is no lunch box culture in the UK, so the designs did not respond to those needs. However, by securing a licensing agreement that allows us to introduce Japan-exclusive items, we can now fulfill the specific needs of the Japanese market."
After the return, a variety of items like handkerchiefs and pouches catering to the needs of the Japanese market have been launched, along with items incorporating trendy elements such as "oshi-katsu" fanclub-like activities.

"Cath Kidston's strength lies in its textiles adorned with hand-painted prints, so we are thinking about Japan-exclusive items that maximize this aspect."
After the comeback, they started with a limited-time pop-up store and an e-commerce site, and on March 6, they opened the flagship store in Omotesando, followed by the first Kansai store in Kyoto on March 19. The Omotesando store has been so popular that entry restrictions were necessary, and the Japan-exclusive items have reportedly received great acclaim.

Designs Born from Beloved Moments in Everyday Life
The reason for the brand's popularity lies in its uniquely vintage-modern textile designs. Patterns inspired by floral designs, London buses, and soldiers are among the representatives, but how do such designs come to life? When asked about the sources of inspiration, Simmons responded as follows:"Cath Kidston's designs are born from inspiration drawn from everyday items. For example, the brand's iconic dog 'Stanley' was the founder's first dog and continues to be a cherished character today."

"The designs are conceived by the creative team in the UK, but everyday scenes are integrated into the design—like using a pet cat as a character or drawing ideas from ice skating lessons taken by the founder's daughter. Each piece is infused with great love."
Even as the creative personnel change, the style of depicting joyful moments in everyday life has been consistently passed down as the philosophy of Cath Kidston since its inception. Sometimes cherished old designs are revived as "archives," while at other times new essences are added for updates. It’s astonishing to learn that over 200 designs are created each year.

A Brand Loved Across Generations
When Cath Kidston announced its return to the market, many users expressed their joy with comments like "I’ve been waiting for this!" and "Welcome back!" It has been about 20 years since it first made its debut in Japan, but who are the customers visiting the store?“We have many young customers who seem to be unfamiliar with the previous Cath Kidston. Upon speaking with them, I often hear comments like, 'I knew about it because my mother used it,' or 'I had a bag bought for me when I was little.' The high recognition across generations is definitely a strength of Cath Kidston."
Particularly, there seems to be a high number of visitors in the 24 to 34 age range, indicating that the brand is cherished as it passes from parent to child. In fact, there are users who are reportedly using it across three generations in their families.

Looking ahead, Simmons expresses, “I want to deliver cute things to those who love them, regardless of age.”
“As our tagline says, 'The Joy Makers Since 1993', every design from Cath Kidston is linked to happy memories. As a brand, we value 'bringing joy to people' very highly, and we aim to continue maintaining that principle going forward.”
Behind the warm and inviting textile designs lies a team of individuals who genuinely enjoy the creative process. The designs crafted by these individuals are sure to continue enchanting many people in the future.
