"Design 0.5 Steps Ahead" by CEIVE, Born From 16 Years of Pattern Making
At first glance, they appear plain, but meticulous construction hides within the details. CEIVE advocates for "clothes where everything has a reason."
Having served as a pattern maker at a domestic maison for about 16 years, Ryosuke Aso pursues a "blank space" left to the wearer's interpretation, alongside a "design 0.5 steps ahead" that brings subtle shifts to everyday life.
We spoke with Aso about his vision for the brand and CEIVE's approach to craftsmanship, centered around denim.
CEIVE's Garment Making Backed by 16 Years of Pattern Making Experience
After graduating from Bunka Fashion College and building nearly 16 years of experience as a pattern maker at a domestic maison, Aso launched CEIVE after leaving the company. While his title shifted to designer, his personal mindset remains unchanged."I consider drafting patterns an essential part of design. I conceptualize what I want to create, draft the pattern myself, and turn it into a garment. What I'm doing now is no different from what I did at my previous job."
Rather than separating design from pattern making, he approaches garment creation directly from structure. That mindset forms the foundation of CEIVE's craftsmanship.
Leaving "Blank Space" to Leave Interpretation to the Wearer
The name "CEIVE" derives from the word root found in terms like receive, perceive, and conceive. Just as prefixes alter the meaning of a word, the brand hopes its garments will reveal different expressions depending on the wearer and the occasion."I don't view the clothes themselves as finished products. Instead, I want CEIVE to be a brand that looks different each time depending on the mindset and style of the person wearing them."
Nothing about the materials, patterns, or specifications is decided on a whim—everything has a reason behind it. At the same time, he makes sure not to impose the creator's intentions onto the user.
"If you try to explain everything, that single vision becomes the only 'correct' way to wear the item. Fashion is ultimately about individual freedom. That's why I refrain from pushing ideas to the forefront and prefer leaving a 'blank space.'"
A clear creator's logic balanced with the wearer's free interpretation—this harmony shapes the essence of CEIVE.

Adding a "0.5-Step Ahead" Twist to Everyday Wear
CEIVE aims to create clothes that feel like a natural extension of daily life, enhanced by subtle shifts in fabric, silhouette, or styling. This is what Aso calls "design 0.5 steps ahead.""Not a full step, but half a step. I value changes subtle enough that only the wearer notices the difference, without going overboard."
While appearing basic at first glance, putting them on reveals subtle contours in the silhouette or unique tactile textures of the fabric. This delicate sense of distinction sets CEIVE apart from ordinary basics.
"It looks plain at first, but feels subtly different once worn. Rather than making a loud statement, I want wearers to discover it for themselves."
Understated yet quietly resonating with tactile sensations—that is the core of CEIVE's design.
Denim Chosen with Long-Term Wear in Mind
For CEIVE, denim is the fabric that best symbolizes the brand's philosophy."The starting point is that clothes should be worn for a long time. Denim is durable, looks stylish even when worn out or repaired, and can be repurposed. It perfectly embodies our philosophy."
For its first two seasons, the brand's collections consisted almost entirely of denim. Starting from denim and gradually building out complementary pieces remains CEIVE's core approach. Although denim originates as rugged workwear, the brand skips artificial distressing in favor of a clean look. The quality speaks through the intrinsic beauty of the fabric and the refined silhouette created by meticulous patterning.

Reconstructing the Timeless: "CLASSIC"
"CLASSIC" was the brand's very first product and remains a mainstay today. While incorporating vintage-inspired details such as classic stitch colors and belt loops, it is not a mere reproduction of past denim models. The silhouette has been freshly reconstructed through Aso's personal interpretation."The waist and hips are kept slim, while the rise is made slightly deeper. It creates a clean yet effortlessly relaxed shape."
By softening the side curves, he maintained a slim hip line while deepening the rise—harmonizing elements that typically clash through clever pattern manipulation. Years of experience drawing countless lines as a pattern maker allowed him to bring a fresh balance to classic details. Rather than simply imitating vintage masterpieces, this piece reflects a drive to create a modern standard through contemporary eyes.

Twisted Denim Born from Patternmaking: "TWIST"
Symbolizing "design that is half a step ahead" is the "TWIST." The twisted silhouette, where the side seams wrap around the legs, stems not from eccentricity, but directly from patternmaking."It all started with the idea of what would happen if someone wore tapered pants at an angle. Rather than simply shifting the lines, I designed a structure to actually allow them to be worn at an angle, deliberately twisting the garment," explains Aso.
This twist creates a discrepancy in length between the inside and outside of the hem, as well as between the front and back. Typically, a patternmaker would correct this to form a clean, straight line, but Aso intentionally left the difference. Since the distortion was not just decorative line-shifting but the result of pushing the structure of wearing pants at an angle to its limit, he wanted to showcase even those traces as part of the design.
"Every single line drawn has a purpose. I believe 'design half a step ahead' includes having a clear rationale for retaining the distortion, rather than just creating a subtle difference for the sake of it."
A subtle sense of intrigue born from a meticulously thought-out structure—that is the essence of CEIVE's craftsmanship.

Clean Workwear Defined by Silhouette and Fabric
This philosophy extends beyond denim. The "PADDED NEP TWILL COVERALLS" reinterprets classic workwear through its silhouette."We gave both the body and sleeve widths a relaxed fit while keeping the length moderately cropped. Rather than aiming for novelty, I wanted to showcase its perfect balance," says Aso.
While retaining workwear-derived details such as large patch pockets and a corduroy collar, the overall impression remains distinctly clean. For Aso, "atmosphere" isn't created through superficial treatments like distressing or fading; it emerges naturally from the silhouette born of patternmaking and the innate character of the fabric itself.

The "WOOL RAGLAN OVER COAT" stems from the exact same philosophy. Utilizing a short beaver fabric double-woven from ultra-fine Super 100s and Super 170s wool yarns, it features a simple design that highlights a weighty feel and rich volume. Without relying on embellishment, the commitment to letting the garment's structure and fabric speak for themselves shines through here as well.

CEIVE is currently creating opportunities for people to experience the garments firsthand, such as pop-up events at stockists nationwide.
"I want to share the brand's meticulous attention to detail—things you can't see at first glance—with shop staff first, so they can pass it on to customers. I hope to steadily expand these opportunities," Aso shares.
"Clothing with a reason for everything." These words capture CEIVE's stance: meticulously engineered yet never imposing answers, leaving the final interpretation to the wearer. The subtle sense of intrigue hidden within plain daily wear is born from deeply considered patterns, fabrics, and specifications. Maintaining that exquisite distance of being "half a step ahead," CEIVE continues to explore new forms of everyday wear.
