The Birthplace of a 200-Year Legacy! How Clarks’ Petersburg Embodies the Value of 'Quiet Luxury'
Clarks has introduced countless masterpieces to the world, including the Desert Boot and the Wallabee. But surprisingly, the first item ever crafted by this historic British shoe brand, which boasts an archive of over 22,000 designs, was a single pair of slippers made from mouton shearling.
Now, to celebrate its 200th anniversary this year, Clarks has revived the "Petersburg," the slipper that symbolizes its very beginnings. Embodying the brand's unwavering philosophy of "comfort" in everything from its materials to its construction, what message does this iconic footwear hold for us today?

It All Started with a Slipper Made from Scraps
The story behind this first slipper is deeply connected to the brand's origins. Clarks was founded in 1825 by brothers James and Cyrus Clark in the village of Street in Somerset, southwest England. The Clark family's business was originally crafting sheepskin rugs, and they sourced their hides from a tannery run by the older brother, Cyrus.

James Clark had the idea to make a slipper to put the shearling offcuts from short-haired sheep—unsuitable for rug making—to good use. He collaborated with a local shoemaker, Esau Witnell, and after three years of work, the Petersburg was born.
At the time, slippers made from shearling were a novelty in England. Their warmth and soft comfort quickly became popular, launching Clarks into full-scale shoemaking. Initially, the company didn't have its own factory; instead, artisans and their families crafted the shoes at home and delivered the finished products to the brothers every Friday.

The origin of the name 'Petersburg' remains a mystery. No corresponding place name exists, and no mention of it appears in the records of the time. It is thought that the name was likely chosen for its pleasant sound, much like a nickname.

Crafted from Mouton Shearling: Nature's High-Tech Material
Now, let's take a closer look at the reissued model. The material is the same mouton shearling as the original. As mentioned earlier, the choice of this hide was driven by sustainability. However, mouton shearling is also a high-tech material created by nature.
The fluffy pile gently envelops the foot, providing excellent cushioning. Additionally, the fibers trap a generous amount of air, creating superior breathability and insulation. This results in a comfortable experience that is warm in winter yet remains breathable and prevents stuffiness even in summer.

The design faithfully reproduces the original 1825 style as closely as possible. It's a minimalist, logo-free slip-on, with stitching around the opening that evokes the warmth of handcraftsmanship.
The original Petersburg is currently on display in the archives near the brand's UK headquarters, and the reissue was developed based on this physical artifact and surviving documents.
At the same time, the last (foot form) has been fine-tuned to fit the modern foot, and the slipper has also been made more lightweight. And because machine sewing would create a finish that is *too* perfect, artisans employed hand-finishing for the pile and stitching to replicate the warm, handcrafted look of the original.
Using mouton shearling for both the upper and the lining posed a challenge in balancing the material's thickness with the sewing, but this delicate process was masterfully handled thanks to expert craftsmanship.

A special engraving commemorating the brand’s 200th anniversary is stamped on the outsole. This design, featuring the Clarks logo, the founding year, and a special message, is a new element not found on the original. It establishes this revival model as a symbolic pair of shoes that bridges the past and the future.
From Outward Style to Inner Substance: Redefining Modern Luxury
The Petersburg model is imbued with a special sentiment from Clarks. This revived model champions a "loungewear style." This concept goes beyond mere indoor footwear, representing "shoes that elevate the quality of your time spent at home."In essence, these slippers are a return to the brand’s origins of "comfort within the home." They were created not for outward display, but as a product focused on enriching one’s inner world.
This philosophy aligns with the concept of "Quiet Luxury"—an understated, high-quality indulgence—that has been gaining significant traction in the fashion world recently.

Moreover, the decision to incorporate manual craftsmanship and limit the production to just 200 pairs is significant. It reflects the belief that "true sustainability is about choosing items you can cherish for a long time and using them with care."
This year, in celebration of its 200th anniversary, Clarks has embraced the concept of "200 YEARS OF COMFORT." The Petersburg is a special pair of shoes that embodies this philosophy in its purest form. Revived after two centuries, it stands as a testament to the brand’s origins and a symbol of the enduring comfort that will carry on into the future.
