Not Yet in Japan: Introducing Clōw Atelier, the Dutch Brand Redefining Hair Accessories as “Jewelry for Your Hair”
With its organic lines, minimalist shapes, and sculptural forms that harmonize with the body, clōw atelier is a truly unique hair accessory brand. It was born from the conviction of its Netherlands-based founder, Aimée Meddens, that "the smallest details can transform an entire look."
Meddens channels the somatic awareness and discipline she honed as a competitive equestrian, blending it with a deep-seated creativity to craft hairpieces that feel personal and deeply connected to the wearer. We sat down with the trailblazing designer to dive deep into her creative process and design philosophy as she pioneers a new frontier in hair accessories.

Guided by Passion: From the Competitive Arena to the Creative Studio
Some designs leave a lasting impression without being loud. A tiny difference or a subtle detail can dramatically change the entire feel of an outfit. clōw atelier was born from this very sensibility.Founder Aimée Meddens, a native of the Netherlands, dedicated herself to competitive equestrianism from a young age, honing her body and discipline over many years. This experience, she says, remains a solid foundation for her creative work today. "My sense of focus and precision was cultivated during that time," she explains. Meanwhile, she also pursued an academic path, majoring in law.
However, throughout this process, she always felt that her inner creativity wasn't being fully expressed. When she eventually stepped away from the world of competition, she returned to the simple impulse to 'create.'

“I decided at one point to fully commit to building something of my own. That was the beginning of clōw atelier and the starting point for creating with intention, shaping something both personal and refined.”
The brand’s name is derived from her mother's name, Cloé. As the word "atelier" suggests, the creation process is always intentional and deliberate. Instead of mass production, the focus is on a considered approach to each individual piece. This creative process itself forms the very core of the brand.
A New Design Language, Born from 'Hair'
For Aimée, who had a strong interest in fashion since childhood, there were many options—clothing, bags, jewelry. The reason she chose to focus on hair accessories was clear.“I’ve always been drawn to jewelry for its power to change an entire outfit with just a small design. While jewelry already has a rich history and a wealth of expression, I felt that sophisticated, intentional hair accessories were missing.”
This philosophy is reflected in her signature pieces. One popular item, "The Knot French Hairpin," is a hairpin with an impressive long silhouette and flowing curves, striking a balance between quiet luxury and practicality. It naturally follows the line of the hair, subtly pulling the whole look together.

"The Knot," which symbolizes the brand, is a signature piece characterized by its sculptural, knot-like form, as its name suggests. It's a minimal yet powerful piece that makes a statement. The balance it strikes—adding a strong contour to an outfit without being overly assertive—is quintessentially clōw atelier.

Furthermore, "The small Knot" translates this design onto a more delicate scale, offering an appealing lightness that makes it easy to incorporate into daily life. It’s a piece that allows you to experience the brand's sculptural and somatic qualities in a more intimate way.

Organic lines and pared-down minimalism. But for her, it's not just about aesthetic form. What truly matters is how a piece resonates with the human form.
“Much of the creative process is spent fine-tuning the balance of each piece when worn. We repeatedly test and verify the ratios, weight, and placement, adjusting every detail. No matter how visually striking a form is, it isn't complete until it can settle naturally within the hair and resonate with its every move.”
Inspiration, she says, often strikes suddenly, more as a feeling than a concrete idea. “It can manifest as a sensation rather than a shape itself. Sometimes, a form seen in a dream lingers in her mind.” These images are then translated into drawings, subjected to physical trials, and ultimately honed until they achieve a state of “existing naturally, as if they were always meant to be there.”
The Philosophy Behind Material and Method
The brand's concept, “to elevate one's sense of self,” is more than just an abstract motto. The collection is intentionally diverse, offering everything from subtle accents to bold statement pieces.“I want people to be able to select a part of themselves to express, depending on their mood or state of being on any given day,” says Aimé. The forms are distinct yet never excessive, acting as tools that resonate with one's inner world. This philosophy is deeply rooted in her choice of materials as well.
clōw atelier primarily works with eco-brass. The official website notes a continuous review of designs to minimize waste while maximizing durability and states that each piece is crafted in small, handmade batches. The brand explicitly states its commitment to responsible production and craftsmanship, achieved by partnering with like-minded ateliers.
Additionally, models that incorporate elastic are designed with replaceable parts, ensuring they can be cherished for years. This vision of creating lasting companions rather than disposable items permeates the entire brand experience, not just the products themselves.

Building Design Value Over Time
In a contemporary fashion landscape dominated by speed and excess, clōw atelier stands in stark contrast. Rather than churning out a constant stream of newness, the brand values the time it takes for each design to be seen and understood.“I want to cherish the time it takes for people to understand and appreciate a design. That’s what builds a solid foundation. It's not about slowing down but about building with consistency and purpose.”
A tiny detail, worn in the hair, can shift an entire look. This belief suggests that her creations are more than mere ornaments; they are tools for subtly refining one's sense of self and relationship with the world. Each clōw atelier piece gently accompanies these personal shifts, quietly melting into the fabric of daily life. It is this quiet conviction that imbues these small, sculpted objects with their undeniable strength.
