The Newest Version of a Summer Shell, Shaped by User Feedback

"Light Canyon Soft Shell Jacket," 15,950 yen (tax included)
The Light Canyon Soft Shell was designed for enjoying today's summer mountains, where extreme heat waves are now an annual challenge.
"During development, we went back and checked user opinions to clearly define what people wanted in a shell jacket.
"Not just for rain—strong winds on ridgelines and other open areas were also a concern, so it needed to be reliably windproof. And to keep wearers comfortable, we needed to ensure that sweat vapor could escape, maintaining a dry feel. We thoroughly revisited the essential functions of a shell with these needs in mind."
While many outdoor brands license technology from others, Columbia is recognized for using in-house, proprietary developments.
"As for wind, the soft shell alone provides enough windproofing and insulation, but rain was more challenging. That's why this model features our unique 'Omni-Shield' technology. Our original water-repellent process, which uses no fluorine compounds, preserves the material’s texture while repelling light rain and droplets."
Slip your arms through the sleeves and you’ll be surprised by not just the feather-light weight but also the freedom of movement.
"We use ‘Primeflex 4Way Stretch’ as the main material.
"This 100% polyester taffeta fabric stretches in all four directions, providing excellent durability and making it ideal for dynamic activities like trekking.
"It weighs only 268 grams (in size M), making it among the lightest of all Columbia shells."
Another special feature of this shell is the inclusion of "Omni-Shade," which provides UV protection.
"Omni-Shade is mostly used in summer shirts, shorts, and caps, but since many of our customers are concerned about UV exposure, we implemented it in this shell as well. This fabric offers UPF 30 protection."
UPF is an index indicating how much a garment shields the skin from ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB). A garment with UPF 30 extends the time it takes for UV to affect your skin by about 30 times compared to bare skin.
It is said that UV radiation intensifies by about 10–12% for every 1,000 meters of elevation.
While the best tactics are to avoid being out at peak UV times or to stay in the shade, that's hardly feasible when hiking. Wearing sun-protective clothing is the most efficient strategy.
"Because we develop many different technologies in-house, it’s Columbia’s strength to be able to seamlessly combine features like waterproofing and sun protection whenever needed."

Functional, Waste-free, Meticulously Crafted Details

The silhouette is a regular fit.
"We assumed some users would use this as a mid-layer, so we kept the fit snug without unnecessary bagginess. The hem also has a drawcord for fine-tuning the silhouette.
"On the design side, we strove for simplicity, streamlining away all distracting details."
As much as a shell is apparel, it’s also a piece of gear. Let’s check out the details.
"There are zippered pockets on both sides of the torso. These handwarmer pockets have plenty of storage and are handy for carrying small essentials."
"The hood, a staple of shell design, is three-dimensionally shaped to fit the contours of your head. A built-in drawcord lets you adjust the fit for comfort and security."
"Summer shells are often put on and taken off according to weather and temperature, which is why we adopted a packable design. Since you can fold it up and store it in the interior pocket, there’s no worry about misplacing a separate storage bag.
"Customer reviews also speak favorably about the packable feature. Many people keep it in their backpack and pull it out when they feel chilly or get caught in sudden rain."

What Makes This Jacket Possible at a Price in the 10,000-yen Range?

Although it's a genuine outdoor shell, more users than expected wear it in town.
Because the design is simple, it easily integrates into everyday outfits.
The subdued earth tones and matte shell texture prevent it from having the typical rugged feel associated with outdoor wear. It also seems perfect as an outer layer for commuting.
Available in beige, khaki, and black
When you think of Columbia, you think of a global brand representing America's outdoor scene. The fact that you can purchase their outerwear for around 10,000 yen is particularly noteworthy.
"Many Columbia products are priced more affordably than those of competing brands. The reason we can do that is because we use our own proprietary technologies developed in-house.
"If we were to adopt technologies developed by other companies, costs would inevitably rise, raising the retail price.
"Above all, 'getting as many people as possible to enjoy the outdoors' is one of our brand’s core missions. That’s why we’re committed to developing products at reasonable prices."

The "Light Canyon Soft Shell Jacket," which has become Columbia’s flagship summer shell, symbolizes not only the brand's development prowess but also the sincerity behind their manufacturing ethos.
