Why Can You Wear Them Both in the Mountains and the City? How Columbia's "Yamagenic" Solved the Hiking Pants Dilemma

2026.06.03
Hashtags like '#NatureLovers' and '#WomenWhoHike' have been popping up all over social media lately, sparking conversations about the growing number of young people and women getting into casual hiking.
Riding this wave, Columbia has released the Yamagenic Pants, designed specifically for female hikers. We sat down with Yukiko Otsuki from Columbia Sportswear Japan to discuss the development of this product, which was created from a uniquely female point of view.

The length and silhouette of the pants were refined through numerous fittings.

The Challenges of Hiking Apparel from a Woman's Perspective

"The outdoor industry tends to be male-focused, but with more and more women getting into hiking, we saw huge potential in the demand for women's products. That's why we launched a project to develop items specifically for them."
As the project moved forward, several issues came to light. The design of the pants became a particularly crucial focus. While tops are increasingly unisex, pants are heavily influenced by body shape and silhouette, making them the perfect item to showcase thoughtful, female-centric design.
The design focuses not only on practicality but also on a style that creates a flattering look.
While functionality is often the top priority for outdoor wear, a growing number of consumers also care about fashion. We saw an opportunity to stand out with pants, as their fit and silhouette have a huge impact on overall style.
To explore this, we reached out to fashion industry insiders and influencers, and in doing so, we uncovered new trends in hiking.
"We discovered that people are enjoying the outdoors in more diverse ways—not just through serious mountaineering but also with casual hikes up smaller mountains and enjoying meals outdoors. What really stood out was that many people felt a little self-conscious wearing a 'full-on hiker' outfit. For instance, someone might take the train to Mt. Takao but want to stop in Shinjuku on the way home to pick up some groceries without feeling out of place."

From the Trail to the Town: Hiking Wear for Everyday Life

Responding to the growing urban need for apparel that can move seamlessly between the city and the mountains—rather than just being 'for the trail'—the Yamagenic Pants were built around the concept of 'at home in the mountains and on the street.'
"For example, traditional hiking pants prioritize mobility and often have darts around the knees for easier movement. We felt this look was a little too 'outdoorsy' for daily wear. So, for this design, we deliberately removed the knee darts to create a silhouette that's perfect for the city.
Of course, we didn't want to sacrifice mobility. We made countless small adjustments, like tweaking the balance of the front and back panels, to ensure they remain easy to move in."
Tucks around the waist were added to enhance mobility.
Tucks were also added around the waist to provide more room. This design choice reduces tightness around the hips and strain when squatting, all while creating a flattering silhouette that makes your legs look great. The design incorporates feedback from around 150 women.

A Stretch Fabric That Hides Lines, Even on Steep Climbs

The pants are made from CORDURA® 4-way stretch fabric. Because it stretches vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, it makes lifting your legs on a hike feel effortless.
"This material is used in some of our other products, and I personally find it to be the most dependable fabric for hiking. For instance, on steep ascents where you're lifting your legs high, it's common for underwear lines to become visible, but this fabric prevents that from happening. It also has just the right amount of thickness, so it doesn't cling to your body.
This project wasn't just confined to the product development team. Female employees from across the company—from sales and retail staff to inventory management—all got involved. By treating the women who work at Columbia as consumers themselves and pooling the concerns and needs they experience daily, we were able to approach the development process from a completely different angle than we would for traditional outdoor wear."
The combination of the tucks and the fabric creates a synergistic effect, making it difficult for underwear or body lines to show through.
What's more, this thickness plays a more crucial role than meets the eye.
"The weather in the mountains changes fast, and it can get cold in an instant. You can layer up or down with tops, but I've always found it tricky to manage temperature with pants. That's where this thick material comes in—it's a huge plus because you don't feel the chill as much when the temperature drops or when you're sitting on rocks.
Feeling cold on a mountain can quickly turn into anxiety, so comfort is key. You can wear these pants through spring, summer, and fall. And if you layer a pair of tights underneath, they're even good for winter."
On top of that, they boast excellent durability with high abrasion and tear resistance. They're also treated with Columbia's proprietary Omni-Shield water-repellent technology and Omni-Shade UV protection.
"UV radiation gets stronger at higher altitudes. A lot of women are concerned about getting sunburned, so we made sure these pants have a UPF 50 rating."

Three Silhouettes to Match Your Hiking Style and Preference

The new collection features three silhouettes designed for everything from serious mountaineering to casual hikes. Each one is built around the core concept of "at home in the mountains, at home in the city."
"For serious ascents and advanced hikers who need excellent freedom of movement, we recommend the sleek 'Slim' fit. Plus, at high altitudes, there's always a risk of dropping things, so we've made all the pockets zippered."
『W Yamagenic Tight Pant』14,300 yen (incl. tax)
For more casual hikes, we've introduced the 'Wide' fit, which incorporates a trendy, modern silhouette.
"Our research showed a strong demand for a wide-leg option. The challenge with wide pants is that the fabric can easily bunch up. So, instead of just making them wider, we engineered them so your leg stays centered within the pant, creating a beautiful, clean line when you wear them."
『W Yamagenic Wide Pant』15,950 yen (incl. tax)
But it's not just about looking good; we've also tackled the practical challenges that come with a wide silhouette.
"Baggy hems can be a snagging hazard on the trail, so we added a drawcord at the cuff. You can cinch it tight for safety during hikes and other activities, then loosen it in the city to enjoy the look of regular wide-leg pants."
It's recommended to cinch the hems with the drawcord while hiking.
The 'Basic' fit is designed as the perfect middle ground between the other two.
『W Yamagenic Pant』14,850 yen (incl. tax)
"As for the webbing belt, opinions were split on whether it was essential. That's why we decided to include it only on this 'Basic' model. The 'Slim' and 'Wide' versions, however, feature belt loops to give you more styling flexibility."
Only the Basic model includes a webbing belt.

The Allure of Colors Optimized for Each Silhouette!

The colorways were also intentionally chosen for each silhouette.
"We finalized the colors after holding sessions with influencers and stylists. While the core colors are available across all three fits, we took a unique approach for each. For instance, because the 'Wide' fit is so on-trend, we introduced a pink color—something you rarely see in traditional hiking pants.
In contrast, the 'Basic' fit is built around a palette of softer tones to make it versatile enough for a wide range of outfits."
The pink Wide model is selling better than expected.
They also report a fantastic response since the launch.
"Many customers who try them on in-store end up comparing the different silhouettes and really appreciate the unique qualities of each. We're also seeing people style them in ways we never even imagined, which is incredibly inspiring for us.
Columbia has a deep well of expertise in materials and functional design. We plan to analyze the feedback from this first season, listen to our users, and use our knowledge to improve and expand the product lineup. We want to keep offering new ways for people to enjoy the outdoors."
The "Yamagenic" collection, designed for the modern hiker who moves seamlessly between the mountains and the city, is more than just an answer to the "wearable anywhere" challenge—it's a collection that's redefining what hiking pants can be.
