Giving Skate Shoes a Breath of Fresh Air: What's the Air Circulation System in DC Shoes' Rereleased 'AT-2'?

2026.05.18
Skate shoes have constantly evolved as the sport has progressed. But one thing often got overlooked: comfort, especially when it came to heat and stuffiness. That's where the California skate brand DC Shoes, known for its range of footwear, apparel, and accessories, stepped in with a novel idea: 'breathability'.
First released in 2005, the 'AT-2' featured a ventilation system with air channels built into the sole to regulate the temperature inside the shoe.
The shoe drew a lot of attention for its unconventional approach at the time. Now, this year, the AT-2 is making a comeback with even better breathability. So, what's this new breath of fresh air in the classic skate shoe? We'll dive into the technology with Akira Terao, the product manager for DC Shoes at Boardriders Japan G.K.

A Solution Born at the Peak of the "Bulky" Trend: "Breathability"

"In the early 2000s, skate shoes were at the peak of their 'bulky' phase, getting bigger and thicker. What was in demand back then was cushioning to protect the feet from strong impacts, durability to withstand hard riding, and reliable grip.
But this pursuit of protection led to its own problems: shoes became prone to trapping heat, and they also got heavier. The real challenge was figuring out how to deliver both the durability that is the lifeblood of a skate shoe and the comfort and breathability that skaters craved."
The idea that emerged to solve this dilemma was to 'circulate air inside the shoe'.
The AT-2's color variations include "Black/White" (left) and "White/Black/White" (right), as well as the colorful "Black/Multi" and "Black/Gray/Red."

A Tech Design Reflecting the Vibe of the Early 2000s

The result of this development was the 'AT-2,' equipped with the proprietary 'AEROTECH Ventilation System' (AEROTECH for short).
Released in 2005, this shoe was a successor to the 2001 signature model of legendary rider Danny Way. It was positioned as the most innovative, high-performance technical shoe in the lineup at the time.
Its design incorporated insights not just from skating, but also from other sports like BMX, which demands precise pedal control, and motocross, where riders are exposed to extreme heat.
The AT-2's dynamic silhouette captures the futurist aesthetic that was prevalent in music and fashion scenes in the early 2000s.
The AT-2 was a hit not just with skaters but also with high-tech sneakerheads, but it eventually disappeared from the lineup.
So why bring this model back more than 20 years after its original release?
"One of the reasons is the current trends. With the resurgence of Y2K-era bulky silhouettes and tech styles, there's a renewed focus on the designs and features of early 2000s skate shoes."
On top of these trends, advancements in technology were the deciding factor in bringing the shoe back.
"It's been over 20 years since the original was developed, and of course, technology and materials have evolved. We realized we could faithfully recreate the exterior details while upgrading the AEROTECH's breathability."

How Does the Air Flow: Where Does It Enter and Exit?

So, what exactly is the mechanism behind AEROTECH, the core technology of the AT-2?
"It’s a system where air enters through vents in the sole, travels through airflow channels inside the midsole, and then escapes out the top of the shoe."
While most skate shoes get their ventilation from the upper, AEROTECH pulls air in from the sole. It pushes air in from under the foot to ventilate the entire interior—in essence, a design that 'circulates wind inside the shoe.'
"Based on feedback from pro riders, we've created an optimal layout that balances durability and breathability, especially in areas prone to heat buildup like the ball of the foot and the side panels. We also use mesh materials throughout the insole and on various parts of the upper to further promote air circulation inside the shoe."
AEROTECH keeps your feet comfortable, even in hot weather or during intense activity.
In the reissued model, this air circulation structure has been significantly enhanced. Thanks to newly added ventilation holes across the entire insole, captured air flows more smoothly under the foot, efficiently expelling heat from inside the shoe.
The insole is equipped with ventilation ports called 'VENT HOLEs'.

Detailed Craftsmanship for High-Performance Support

This ventilation technology is backed by key components integrated throughout the shoe's design.
“The TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) cage cradling the sides is engineered for intense lateral movements, locking down the foot to prevent slippage inside the shoe. Plus, the mesh inserts ensure excellent breathability.”
The TPU cage features DC Shoes' iconic big logo.
The airbag embedded in the heel absorbs the powerful impact of landings after jumps and tricks, alleviating stress on your feet and joints.
The TPU airbag delivers superior cushioning.
The ultra-thick tongue serves a dual purpose: it protects the ankle and instep while also creating the brand’s signature voluminous silhouette.
The ULTRA PADDED TONGUE is a signature detail, iconic to DC Shoes.
The midsole features UNI-LITE, a material that is both lightweight and exceptionally cushioned. Despite their bulky appearance, the shoes offer a surprisingly nimble feel.
The outsole is crafted from a sticky rubber renowned for its superior shock absorption and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, the pill pattern tread delivers multi-directional grip, providing a locked-in feel on the deck and reliable traction on the streets.
Balancing breathability with a comfortable fit, the AT-2 is perfect not just for skating but for everyday wear in the city.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Redefining the Role of Skate Shoes

For DC Shoes, Aerotech's ventilation is more than a mere comfort feature; it's an "environmental control technology" designed to maintain peak performance under grueling conditions.
By channeling air into the skate shoe, the "AT-2" introduces a new paradigm: supporting performance by controlling the environment within.
