The Unexpected Inspiration Behind the Development?
The DENHAM Tech Denim Series is built around the “Three Tech” concept, which blends three technical elements: fabric, design, and component parts.By using mesh denim developed by Kaihara, they’ve achieved both breathability and lightness. Let’s dive deeper into the fabric itself.

This fabric was developed around 2015. At the time, the spotlight was on high-stretch, highly breathable underwear, with athletes and celebrities embracing the trend.
At Kaihara Denim, the team wondered if it might be possible to bring the same comfortable feel of performance underwear to denim. Starting with this idea, the sales team began analyzing organizational structures for clues.
Comfortable pants are usually associated with knitted structures, but denim is traditionally woven—so it wasn’t a straightforward task. That’s when the challenge began: to reproduce the three-dimensional feel of knitwear using woven techniques.

The overall production process is similar to standard denim. After spinning the yarn, the warp threads are indigo dyed, and then polyester-mixed weft threads are woven in. The finishing step gives it a vintage touch.
"The biggest challenge was to see how close we could get to a knit-like structure with weaving, since, unlike knits, weaving can't loosen the stitches in the same way," (Tamai).
Regular denim uses twill weave with slanted threads for signature sturdiness and character. In contrast, the color mesh denim cleverly mixes two types of weaves with different yarns to create a three-dimensional mesh structure.
This combination achieves four key features: breathability, lightness, quick-drying properties, and the "point-contact" effect that keeps stickiness at bay.

"Point contact" refers to a technique—much like in a polo shirt—where the fabric doesn’t sit flush against your skin, instead minimizing the contact surface thanks to tiny raised areas.
This is the secret to staying comfortable even when you're sweating. The strategic use of polyester also helps resist wrinkles and speeds up drying.

"The main development goal was to maximize airflow as a summer item without compromising on fabric strength," (Tamai).
He notes that the weave structure isn’t complex, but maintaining an authentic denim look was the hardest part.
"We could have made it even lighter if we had focused purely on coolness, but then it would lose what makes denim...well, denim. That’s why we stopped short of sacrificing its character," (Tamai).

That’s exactly why we stayed devoted to the authentic look of denim. This dedication and passion have made it possible to achieve the ideal: denim that still has the classic look, yet feels as comfortable as sportswear. Another unique aspect is the inspiration behind the development process.
"I took inspiration from the sensation of the strings on old electric fans swaying in the breeze, or the paths of steam rising from a shumai steamer—images where air flows freely," (Tamai).
At the Frontier of Functional Beauty & Comfort Born from Workwear & Military
The "Tech Denim Series" proposed by DENHAM can be considered a new staple for surviving the urban summer in comfort. The latest collection featuring the "Color Mesh Denim" draws particular attention, expertly blending workwear and military details to bring a sense of coolness and comfort to the style of anyone who wears it. As discussed already, the fabric’s technical prowess is at the heart of this.
With the concept of "Three Tech," which hones the three elements—fabric, design, and attached parts—DENHAM approaches clothing design with a technical edge, resulting in stylish pieces while maintaining functionality throughout, from the pattern to stitching details.
This season features two colors: indigo, which develops a unique look over time, and Color Stay Navy, which resists fading and suits business scenes as well.

Darts (3D tailoring) at the knees and hem provide enhanced range of motion while reinterpreting the rugged nuance of work pants for the contemporary era. The waistband features a drawcord, allowing for an adjustable fit with or without a belt.

"Color Stay Navy Shirt has a wide boxy silhouette as a base, but includes roominess for better mobility. The back features mesh-paneled ventilation that ensures airflow and keeps you cool. The pocket layout is all about practicality, letting smartphones and other small items fit just right," (Eiro).

Since its launch in 2022, the "Tech Denim Series" has been improved each season, both in design and function. This season’s updates aren’t just about new colors, but also include a refreshed silhouette and revamped details.
"Thankfully, sales have been fantastic. We’re especially seeing support from men in their 30s to 50s who love American casual styles," (Eiro).
"Color Mesh Denim," born from everyday inspirations, is truly a "technology × denim" fusion—making it possible to stay cool and comfortable even through Japan’s humid summer.
DENHAM’s ever-evolving "Tech Denim Series" is designed to deliver value as an experience, not just through material development, but through how the clothing feels to wear. The color mesh denim is the clearest expression of that philosophy.
This fusion of technology, ideas, and craftsmanship is sure to revolutionize your summer wardrobe.
