A Brand on Par with Champion and Russell: The History of DISCUS ATHLETIC, One of America's "Big Three" Sweatshirt Brands
In 1973, in Virginia, USA, the company TULTEX, which specialized in cotton products, launched the sportswear brand DISCUS ATHLETIC.
In this article, we'll journey through the brand's half-century history and explore what DISCUS ATHLETIC is up to today. We sat down with Natsumi Takazawa, Section Manager of the 4th Sales Department at Dream Works Co., Ltd., to get the inside story.
DISCUS ATHLETIC's Golden Era: Known as One of America's "Big Three" Sweatshirt Brands
"Let me start with the brand's name. 'DISCUS ATHLETIC' comes from the 'discus thrower.' As one of the few events to continue since the ancient Olympics, this rich tradition forms the very core of our brand identity.DISCUS ATHLETIC was once one of America's top sweatshirt brands. By sponsoring NASCAR and creating jerseys and sportswear for U.S. universities, the brand built a solid track record and cemented its status.
In the American casual scene of the 1980s and 1990s, it stood alongside 'Champion' and 'RUSSELL ATHLETIC' as one of the 'Big Three' sweatshirt brands, beloved all across the nation.
DISCUS ATHLETIC is built on three core themes: 'Tradition,' 'Strength,' and 'Sport.' Whether as an activewear brand or a staple of American casual style, we continue to carry this legacy forward."

The Iconic "TC Sweatshirt"—A 50% Polyester, 50% Cotton Blend
While the brand offers a diverse lineup, one of its signature materials is a sweatshirt fabric known as 'TC.' This blend of 50% polyester (Tetoron®) and 50% cotton is a hallmark of the brand, featured in its most iconic and classic pieces. Now, let's continue our conversation as we take a look at some vintage 1980s–1990s sweatshirts from the Dream Works archive.
"The TC fabric is lighter, softer, and sportier than 100% cotton sweatshirts. Because of these features, it became incredibly popular across the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s, so much so that DISCUS ATHLETIC became synonymous with TC material.
It also dries faster and holds its shape better than 100% cotton fabric, which must have made it a groundbreaking material back in the day.
If you look at this vintage sweatshirt I have here, you'll see the TC fabric is fleece-lined. As it gets worn in, it develops a pilled texture, but in its original, deadstock condition, the fleece is soft and fluffy.
This worn-in, pilled texture is actually part of its appeal. That's why some of our current releases use a 'pile lining' (French terry) to recreate that vintage, broken-in feel and softness, even when brand new."

"Speaking of fabric texture, for next season's collection, we're planning to release pieces with a faded, sun-bleached finish. This is another way we're honoring that vintage aesthetic."

DISCUS ATHLETIC's College Sweatshirts: A Campus Favorite
DISCUS ATHLETIC is also famous for its college sweatshirts, hoodies, and T-shirts, which were sold in campus co-op stores across America in the 1980s.Let's take a closer look at some of these classic DISCUS ATHLETIC college items.
"Some of the most famous examples include pieces for Harvard University, UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), and the University of Arizona. We really worked with a wide range of universities, so let me show you a few.
This black one is a hoodie-style college sweatshirt from Purdue University in Indiana, a school famous for producing many astronauts.
It's the oldest piece I'm showing you today, likely from the late 1970s or early 1980s. The red hoodie is from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a school well-known as a basketball powerhouse."

"Everything we've shown you so far features a solid green tag, dating from the 1970s and 1980s. However, starting in the 1990s, a two-color green and blue tag with a horizontal layout was frequently used.
This sweatshirt in the photo is from the Atonement Lutheran Church and School, made for the sports club of the Christian school. Judging by the shape of the name tag, it's likely a 1990s piece."

DISCUS ATHLETIC: The Sweatshirts That Fueled Skate Culture
DISCUS ATHLETIC sweatshirts are also famous for being used as the base garment for the global skate brand "POWELL PERALTA" in the 1980s. Following our look at collegiate items, let's now explore some iconic vintage pieces rooted in skate culture."This photo shows a signature model for Tony Hawk, a skateboarding superstar from the 1980s. It's a sweatshirt featuring the same design as his pro model skate deck. The style of the sleeve print is a foundational design that influenced streetwear for years to come.
Furthermore, there were also sweatshirts for the legendary skateboard team 'BONES BRIGADE,' which emerged from POWELL PERALTA, and all of these were printed on DISCUS ATHLETIC bodies."

As we've seen, from its launch in 1973 through the 1980s and 1990s, DISCUS ATHLETIC experienced what can only be called its golden age. During that era, its products were said to be available in Japan with almost no delay.
Afterward, there was a period when the products were temporarily unavailable in Japan, but the brand has made a comeback in recent years, and its apparel is once again available for purchase.
Currently, DISCUS ATHLETIC is expanding in its own unique ways in Japan, as well as in China and South Korea. In South Korea especially, it has reportedly gained immense popularity among the younger generation, with permanent sections set up in well-known select shops.
With its heritage as an authentic American sports brand, DISCUS ATHLETIC is now embarking on a new chapter, half a century after its inception.
