"Dyons" by DUVETICA – A Gathering of Specialists in the Italian Downwear Brand

2025.01.23
Popular as an Italian down brand with high-spec and luxurious vibes, DUVETICA is renowned for its quality and sophisticated designs that suit various styles, attracting a wide range of enthusiasts.
In this article, we delve into the brand's roots and introduce iconic staple items, in conversation with Natsume Saito, DUVETICA's press officer at FEN Co., Ltd..

Japan Plays a Huge Role in the Birth of DUVETICA

Let's start with the brand's roots and basic information. It's said that FEN Co., Ltd., currently the Japanese distributor for DUVETICA, is significantly involved in its inception.
"DUVETICA was established in 2002 in Mogliano Veneto, a town near Venice, Italy. Founder Giampiero Vagliano, formerly the president of 'MONCLER,' coincidentally had ties with our company's president, who worked for a MONCLER distributor in Japan. Giampiero's entrepreneurial venture into DUVETICA aligned with our company, and remarkably, sales initiated in Japan before Italy."

A Time When High-Spec Down Jackets as Fashion Were Rare

The brand began in 2002, and by the Fall-Winter season of 2004, it became the talk of the town and gained prominence as a popular brand.
"Around the early 2000s, down jackets were primarily outdoor brands. High-spec, fashion-specific down jackets were relatively rare.
"With an elegant silhouette influenced by Italian style, suitable for urban wear, the brand moved beyond mere outdoor gear to embody fashion, and thus gained acceptance."

DUVETICA's Definitive Iconic Model "DYONS"

Now, let us introduce you to DUVETICA’s emblematic staple model, "DYONS," as we explore the brand's roots and concept.
"When it comes to DUVETICA down jackets, the image that springs to mind is likely the DYONS, released since 2006. Initially named DIONSIO at its 2006 launch, it has evolved with trends and technological advancements to its current iteration, known as DYONS.
"Featuring a double zipper extending to the hood's top—an iconic brand design—it provides warmth in harsh winters yet maintains a sleek down effect. The hood's stance is precisely crafted for an elegant look, exemplifying our attention to detail. This season, the color palette spans five shades, with the bodies, lining, and zippers showing varied color schemes."

Popular Models Evolving from DYONS

The iconic DYONS models paved the way for celebrated variants like the matte "DYONDUE" and down vest type "ARYSTER."
"Based on the DYONS design, the DYONDUE uses 'Ventile,' a super-dense 100% cotton material originally developed for British Air Force pilots. This material boosts waterproof and thermal protection and gives it a chic look and feel, creating an adult impression."

"The down vest type ARYSTER retains the material feel and hood silhouette refinement and has an adjusted stitch width and sizing for a minimal & sporty silhouette. This item also remains a DUVETICA staple.
"This, like DYONS, was initially released under the model name ARISTEO in 2006, but it has been updated with trends and advancements and is now marketed as ARYSTER."

The Exquisite French Grey Goose Down

DUVETICA is exceptionally particular about the type of down they use in their items. The down they employ is certified by the French Down Association as "4 Flcorons." Additionally, it's valuable to understand the background of how this high-quality down is meticulously selected and produced.
"DUVETICA uses 'Grey Goose Down' which carries the designation of 'Pure Goose Down.' These geese are raised on the estate of the Comte of Saint-Seine, where they are free-range in vast natural surroundings.
"A special machine is used to sort the raw feathers into four quality types, including those for down jackets and comforters. DUVETICA only uses the lightest, highest-quality Grey Goose Down selected by this machine.
"Down with numerous long, delicate filaments attached to the core, known as down balls, is a natural high-function material offering excellent resilience and warmth, providing the right volume with a minimal amount of material.
"The down material used in the items introduced here, enhanced for lightness and softness, balances with a golden ratio of 90% down balls + 10% small feathers. This achieves the world's highest standards of insulation and durability."

Shop Design Once Handled by Tadao Ando for DUVETICA

DUVETICA's flagship store is located in Aoyama, Minato, Tokyo. Since its opening in 2010, it has continued to be the brand's main base for expansion.
"The shop's exterior and interior at the time of opening were managed by architect Tadao Ando. The futuristic interior, akin to a gallery, was considered groundbreaking and sophisticated for its time. The store was operated in this style until its renovation in 2016.
"Giampiero was impressed by Ando's contributions to the cityscape of Venice and his work, leading him to request the shop design. An additional fact: Ando also handled the interior for DUVETICA's Italian flagship store."

As a pioneering entity among fashion-focused, high-quality down specialist brands, it may have marked a key presence where down specialists converged to begin their journey.
This time, further exploration of DUVETICA's profound relationship with Japan and the iconic product DYONS was possible. If you are thinking, "I want a good quality down jacket for winter," you will choose a DUVETICA down jacket without hesitation.
