Trade Your Loafers for EARLE's Summer Leather Sandals

2026.07.21
Catering to the contemporary love for loafers, EARLE has crafted leather sandals and huarache shoes that offer the same distinguished presence as loafers, even in the summer heat.
We sat down with Ryohei Takahashi, the owner and designer of EARLE, to discuss the brand's origins and the core philosophy behind its craftsmanship.

Taking on the Men's Shoe Market

After graduating from design school, EARLE's owner and designer, Takahashi, honed his skills at a company specializing in women's footwear. This experience, where he mastered advanced manufacturing techniques and a refined sense of design, now forms the bedrock of his own brand's creations.
After many years at the design company, Takahashi struck out on his own, launching his business in January 2018 and officially debuting his brand, EARLE, with the Fall/Winter collection that same year. While the fashion industry at the time was a diverse mix of styles, he felt the men's shoe market was critically missing the kind of ideal designs he envisioned.
Takahashi explains the situation and the inspiration for launching the brand:
"Fashion brands offer a vast range of expressions, but I felt there was a shortage of elegant men's shoes that put a fresh spin on classic styles. That's when I decided I wanted to create leather shoes with a gender-neutral appeal, applying the techniques I'd cultivated over many years in women's footwear to the men's market."
As his words suggest, EARLE's core theme is a respect for the universal beauty of classic standards. By infusing these with elegant and minimalist elements, the brand continually strives to create products that bridge the gap between the everyday and the extraordinary.

A Unique Nuance in Every Detail

The foundation of EARLE's craftsmanship lies in its strong, trusting relationships with manufacturing partners, which Takahashi has cultivated since his days at the design company. He now works with multiple factories, carefully selecting the best one for each item's specific design. From the initial sketching phase, he meticulously determines the most suitable production line and manufacturing base for each shoe.
The brand particularly excels at creating full-leather sneakers that cleverly incorporate dress shoe manufacturing techniques, as well as authentic leather shoes with stacked heels. These items, however, don't just fit the mold of traditional classic footwear; they establish a design identity that is uniquely their own.
Standard leather shoes often feature unremarkable toe shapes and low heels. Takahashi, a fashion enthusiast himself, leverages his keen sense of style to constantly seek the perfect balance, creating shoes that pair effortlessly with contemporary trends like wide-leg pants.
"Rather than simply recreating classic boots or loafers, I prioritize adding subtle nuances, like slightly raising the heel or shaping the toe into a semi-square. A simple round toe doesn't look elegant, but if it's too angular, it becomes overly trendy and won't last."
This meticulous attention to detail is most apparent in the curve of the toe—the very "face" of the shoe. An extreme square toe can feel dated quickly, making it hard to wear long-term. By retaining just the right amount of angularity, EARLE masterfully achieves a balance of "polished sophistication and refined elegance" perfect for the modern adult.
This relentless pursuit of detail gives EARLE its unique character, setting it apart from other shoe brands. Customers who appreciate these subtle differences in volume and silhouette, finding a balance that speaks to their personal style, have become the brand's loyal and enthusiastic followers.

Proposing a New Style: Leather Shoes for Summer

This solid brand philosophy is vividly reflected in the items that define midsummer style. A standout from this season's proposals is the "Modan Huarache Shoes," a contemporary take on the traditional Mexican footwear known as the "Huarache."
Loafers have become a go-to everyday shoe for the younger generation and loyal EARLE customers. Takahashi intuitively felt the need for a new shoe that would keep the sophisticated style of a loafer while offering comfort during the sweltering summer heat.
Unlike the previous leather shoe craze when they were paired with skinny pants, today's trend leans toward using leather shoes to add a touch of class and structure to wider-leg denim. Therefore, even with summer shoes that call for a feeling of lightness, a moderate sense of weight that prevents the footwear from looking too flimsy is an indispensable element.
"Even for a summer sandal, we steer clear of designs with an overly open toe or a flimsy, unstructured build. We're dedicated to preserving the shoe's beautiful form, aiming for that perfect balance where they look sharp even when worn barefoot with a jacket."
Additionally, practical and meticulous details designed for barefoot wear are found throughout the shoe. While traditional "Huaraches" often feature an exposed, hard, smooth leather footbed, EARLE uses a soft suede material for the lining that comes into direct contact with the foot.
This greatly reduces the unpleasant stickiness that can occur when wearing them barefoot in the heat of summer. The true genius of EARLE is its ability to avoid overtly comfort-oriented designs while subtly embedding practical features that make you want to wear them daily, like a soft feel and easy-to-walk-in cushioning.

The Shift from Sporty Back to Classic

Another standout item, the "Band & SR Buckle Sandals," represents EARLE's unique response to contemporary fashion currents. This piece was also developed with the same demographic in mind—those who favor a style that pairs well with loafers.
A look at the recent sandal market shows an overwhelming dominance of items from sports brands, typically paired with oversized clothing. However, these excessively sporty sandals are a difficult fit for the style-conscious individuals who regularly wear loafers.
In response, Takahashi used the same high-quality leather found in dress shoes, giving the entire sandal a beautiful sheen. By adding a metal buckle as an accent, he boldly infuses a touch of mature elegance into what is typically a casual item.
"A traditional pin buckle can be a hassle to put on and take off, so we opted for a side-release buckle. We've managed to create a leather sandal that's easy for adults to wear by retaining a hint of its sporty origins but using metal parts instead of plastic."
Just a few years ago, the sandal market was dominated by sporty, sneaker-like designs with bulky silhouettes, but the tide is turning toward more elegant and sophisticated shapes.
Within this changing landscape, the sole of the "Band & SR Buckle Sandals" is packed with thoughtful details for the wearer. Functional aspects derived from sportswear, such as comfort and cushioning, are intentionally preserved. By then crafting the sandal with a classic feel, a perfect marriage of practicality and elegance is achieved.

Currently, EARLE is steadily growing its sales through its own e-commerce site while also being widely carried in select shops, primarily on Japan's main island of Honshu.
This success is rooted in a perspective that sees shoes not merely as tools for walking, but as crucial items that influence the overall balance of an outfit and accentuate the wearer's personality. Designed from the keen eye of a true fashion aficionado, EARLE's shoes have become an essential component of the contemporary wardrobe.
In the fast-paced world of fashion, where trends shift in the blink of an eye, Takahashi's quest to masterfully fuse the timeless beauty of classics with diverse modern lifestyles continues. The sophisticated footwear that EARLE offers is sure to consistently bring a touch of reliable elegance and a pleasant sense of the extraordinary to our ever-changing daily lives.
