Aiming for Comfortable Sleep for Babies & Parents: The Challenge of the Swaddle Brand "ergoPouch"
Are you aware that there is a significant gap in knowledge and measures regarding baby sleep between Japan and overseas? This knowledge gap is said to directly impact a baby's safety and health.
For example, the typical use of futons in Japan may increase the risk of suffocation for babies. Moreover, if a proper sleep environment is not established, it can lead to unstable sleep for the baby, which in turn may accumulate parental fatigue.
In response to such issues, the Australian sleeping wear brand "ergoPouch" aims to provide a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for both babies and parents by promoting the swaddle culture of wrapping babies in cloth to Japan, thus addressing this serious issue.
This time, we spoke with Yuka Sumida, who operates as a Japanese agent for ergoPouch, about baby sleep, the features of ergoPouch, and future prospects.

Aiming for Comfortable Sleep for Babies & Parents with Swaddles
First, I asked for advice on promoting comfortable sleep for babies from parents raising children."In the newborn stage, the physiological phenomenon known as the Moro reflex can cause babies to react startled to external stimuli, disrupting their sleep.
"This continues until around 3 to 4 months of age. Babies might react in a way that startles them, waking up and crying. Since parents have to care for them each time, it leads to sleep deprivation, making them more susceptible to parenting-related stress during this period.
"To address such issues, using a product or cloth called a 'swaddle' minimizes the Moro reflex, leading to more stable sleep for the baby."
While the connection between using a swaddle and stable sleep for babies is not widely known in Japan, this seems to be established knowledge in sleep-advanced countries like Australia and the United States.
Additionally, it is noted that typical "baby blanket" can be challenging to wrap. Given that just putting the baby to sleep is already difficult, wrapping them can add to the challenge. It was from recognizing this issue that ergoPouch became the first to develop a zip-up swaddle globally.

While initiatives regarding baby sleep seem to be advancing overseas, how significant is the knowledge gap compared to Japan?
"In Japan, the information regarding baby sleep is limited. For instance, the measures to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) emphasized by the Japanese government[1] primarily focus on (1) placing the baby to sleep on their back, (2) breastfeeding, and (3) not smoking.
"On the other hand, the guidelines for safe sleep released by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)[2] present about 11 methods of prevention. In Japan, it is common to cover babies with futons, whereas this is recognized as a risk factor for SIDS overseas.
"Covering them with a futon may pose risks of suffocation as they move, which is why ergoPouch recommends using a swaddle.
"By spreading the 'swaddle culture,' which is still not widely recognized in Japan, while including such overseas information, we aim to create an environment where mothers, fathers, and babies can all live comfortably."
Product Development Considering Baby Safety & Improving Sleep Environment
Sumida is working towards spreading "swaddle culture" in Japan through increasing awareness. So, what kind of products does ergoPouch offer? I inquired about the product features, materials, and design focus."ergoPouch offers three main products that align with different growth stages of babies.
"The 'Cocoon Swaddle Bag,' which can be used from birth, allows babies to bring their arms to their preferred positions within the swaddle and even undo buttons to free their hands. This design enables the baby to lift their face when they start to roll over.

"Next, I recommend the 'Jersey Sleeping Bag' starting from the time your baby begins to roll over. It features a wider leg area, accommodating the movements of your baby.

"Finally, there is the 'Sleep Suit Bag' which can be used from when your baby starts walking until about age four. The legs are separated, allowing your baby to walk, and it can also be used like a sleeping bag when needed.

"These products are made from organic cotton, which is breathable and gentle on your baby’s skin. They also come in a color variation that can be used regardless of gender.
"ergoPouch products are certified by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute and are designed to be safe for your baby's hips."

In this way, ergoPouch has designed its products with careful consideration for the developmental stages of babies, emphasizing safety and comfort.
While the appeal of the products is evident, what points should be kept in mind to effectively use ergoPouch's products for establishing a good sleep environment for babies?
"To create a proper sleep environment for babies, three elements are crucial: sound, light, and temperature.
"As bedtime approaches, dim the lights slightly and reduce noise to communicate to your baby that it is nearly time to sleep.
"White noise is also effective for creating a sleep environment. The ergoPouch white noise machine has seven sound options and can play sounds like city noise, rain, and ocean waves. This helps to mask surrounding sounds so that your baby's sleep is not disturbed. The machine also has a light that can serve as indirect lighting during breastfeeding.

"Regarding temperature control, ergoPouch products come with a TOG indicator. TOG is a unit that indicates the thermal insulation and heat retention of bedding. For instance, 0.2 TOG is suitable for summer, while 1.0 TOG can be used year-round. Each ergoPouch product includes a guide for selecting the appropriate TOG based on room temperature."
ergoPouch impressively approaches the entire sleep environment for babies, not just providing bedding. Using a specific indicator like TOG for temperature control offers parents an easily understandable guideline.
Highlighting Issues Within Japan's Parenting Culture
Through platforms like Instagram Live, ergoPouch conveys that it's not wrong for mothers to take time for themselves. This message often moves many mothers to tears."A mother’s sleep directly affects the baby’s health. For a baby to grow up healthy, the mother needs to maintain a good mental state, and for that, her own sleep is essential.
"However, in Japan, there is a prevailing attitude that 'since you are a mom, it is inevitable to struggle,' which can lead to feelings of guilt when mothers try to carve out personal time. ergoPouch aims to disseminate information so that mothers understand the importance of sleep and can rest without guilt. This spreads the belief that a mother’s smile contributes to the happiness of the entire family."

ergoPouch's initiatives can be seen as shedding light on deep-rooted issues within Japan's parenting culture. Finally, I inquired about ergoPouch's future outlook.
"The ultimate goal of ergoPouch is to bring Japan closer to being a 'sleep advanced nation.' Specifically, we aim to foster a consciousness in more people that they should buy a swaddle when a baby is born.
"Currently, Australia and the United States are considered sleep advanced countries. ergoPouch wishes to spread swaddle culture in Japan, like those nations, to create an environment where babies, moms, and dads can all thrive.
"ergoPouch is using social media to share the necessity, usage, and criteria for TOG, as well as tips for choosing products appropriate to the baby's growth stage.
"Furthermore, we provide a wide range of information on how to prepare sleeping environments. Additionally, ergoPouch plans to start selling in major baby product specialty stores, aiming to promote swaddle culture to a broader audience.
"ergoPouch actively communicates to change Japan's underdeveloped sleep culture and is committed to fostering swaddle culture to transform the country.”
I look forward to seeing how ergoPouch pursues this goal long-term and how they address challenges along the way.
