The "Wearable Bag" Concept! Grip Swany's Innovative Camping Apparel
Back in the mid-19th century, when America was buzzing with the Gold Rush, GRIP SWANY got its start making durable buffalo leather gloves for miners. For nearly 200 years, the company has continued to evolve with glove-making at its core, growing into a comprehensive outdoor brand that now offers everything from tents and apparel to shoes.
Among its lineup, the "GEAR BAG VEST," with its innovative 2-way design that functions as both clothing and a bag, is a wildly popular hit among outdoor fanatics. Hidetoshi Yoshihara, Sales Director and Head of Planning at Swany Corporation, shares the inside story behind the creation of this vest, a pioneer in the world of "hands-free camping apparel."

The Brand’s Story Started with a Yellow Leather Glove
The creation of the "Gear Bag Vest" is deeply intertwined with an iconic brand symbol: the "G1 Heritage Glove."
"We've since switched from buffalo to cowhide, but we've maintained the original toughness and functionality. The construction, with its specific leather cut and stitching on the back of the hand, is designed for dexterity—much like a shooting glove. Placing the seams on the outside also prevents them from getting in the way when you're gripping tools or gear."
There's also a story behind the brand's signature "Swany Yellow" color. This vibrant yellow was chosen for high visibility, making it easy to spot a dropped glove even in the darkness of a mine.
The Concept: Apparel to Store Leather Gloves
"During the camping boom that took off around 2019, these gloves became known among campers as 'the ultimate bonfire gloves.' We started hearing people say, 'I wish there was a piece of camping apparel that could hold these gloves,' and that's what sparked the idea for the vest."
You want to move around the campsite hands-free as much as possible. That's why this vest was designed with the storage capacity of a bag, able to hold not just your gloves, but all kinds of gear.

"It features large pockets on the front and back for gloves, an open pocket on the front for your phone, and a zip pocket to keep small items organized. We carefully adjusted the shape and weight distribution of each pocket to ensure it remains comfortable to wear, even when fully loaded."

It has a relaxed fit, and with adjustable shoulder straps, it can easily be worn over a jacket or other outerwear.
A Hybrid Structure That's Both a Vest and a Bag
Of course, other vests have large pockets. But Grip Swany took it a step further, adding a clever feature for carrying firewood or bulky gear around the campsite. That feature is its ability to transform from a vest into a bag. Simply zip up the bottom, and it converts into a tote bag, with the shoulder straps doubling as carry handles. You can still use the vest's exterior pockets to store smaller tools and gear.
The drawcords on the sides also allow you to adjust the size of the bag's opening.
"To ensure it's durable enough to function as a bag, high-stress points like the base of the straps are reinforced with bar-tack stitching."

With its one-of-a-kind design, the Gear Bag Vest quickly won over not just leather glove aficionados, but a wide range of campers as well.
The Current 5.0 Model Features the Classic 60/40 Cloth
Since its initial release in 2021, the vest has seen a series of minor updates to its materials and pocket design, making the current "5.0" the fifth iteration."We’re constantly refining the design based on feedback from our users and the development team. The biggest change this time around is the material. Up to version 4.0, we used a lightweight, quick-drying Supplex nylon. But with 5.0, we’ve switched to the popular 60/40 cloth, a blend of 60% cotton and 40% nylon."
60/40 cloth is a legendary material in the world of outdoor gear, famously used in mountain parkas and backpacks since the 1970s. It brilliantly combines the breathability of cotton with the durability of nylon. When it gets wet, the cotton fibers swell up, creating a natural barrier that prevents water from getting through.

"A key feature is that while it retains the lightness and sheen of nylon, the fabric develops a richer character the more you wear it. This ability to age gracefully is something it shares with our G1 gloves.
Plus, while our core users have traditionally been campers, we're seeing a growing demand from people who want to wear it as a daily fashion piece in the city. I think switching to 60/40 cloth has made it a versatile garment that fits in seamlessly, whether you're in the great outdoors or navigating city streets."

The plan is to keep rolling out updates for the Gear Bag Vest.
"As a brand, our goal is to incrementally improve its level of perfection, kind of like an operating system. We're already planning for the next model, 6.0, and are looking into updates that incorporate user feedback."
Grip Swany’s brand concept is "GO ON AN ADVENTURE." True to its motto, this camp vest, which lets you roam hands-free, is the kind of gear that transforms the everyday into an adventure.
