Recreating 1980s "Everyday Wear" for Today: Healthknit's Classic Sweatshirt

2026.09.29
Healthknit is an underwear brand founded in Tennessee, USA, in 1900. Built on craftsmanship honed over more than 120 years of history, its "Classic Sweatshirt Series"—which revives casual 1980s sweatshirts for the modern era—is garnering widespread popularity.
We spoke with Yoshiteru Harada from the sales department at Healthknit Brands Co., Ltd. to look back at the brand's history and explore the craftsmanship behind bringing 1980s archives back to life today.

Classic Sweatshirts Born from 1980s "Regular Vintage" Wear

In 1900, Healthknit was born as an underwear brand in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA.
Established as an in-house brand of Standard Knitting Mills, founded by Edward J. McMillan, Healthknit supported the daily wear of the American public at its peak from a massive factory compound spanning an area equivalent to two Tokyo Domes.
In particular, the three-button "Henley Neck," introduced in the 1940s, remains beloved by many as a brand icon to this day.

With such a long history behind it, the company newly launched the "Classic Sweatshirt Series" starting in the Autumn/Winter 2022 season. Interestingly, the source of inspiration was not rare, high-value "vintage" clothing. Instead, Healthknit shone a spotlight on the everyday casual sweatshirts that young people regularly wore through the 1980s and 1990s.
Yoshiteru Harada of Healthknit Brands explains the objective behind this choice:
"The concept was closer to street-style casual items from the 1980s and 1990s rather than rare vintage garments. Rather than featuring the intricate details seen in older vintage wear, these represent an era made with relatively simple stitching."
By intentionally stripping away the elaborate details characteristic of vintage clothing, the goal was to allow a wider range of people—not just hardcore vintage enthusiasts—to naturally incorporate the garments into modern everyday fashion. Respecting history while keeping today's users close at heart—this brand philosophy runs right through the core of this series.

Recreating a 50% Cotton / 50% Polyester Blended Fabric

At the core of the series is an original fabric that faithfully recreates the look and feel of that era. The material is a 50% cotton and 50% polyester blend. This follows the exact specifications of the "Classic Sweatshirt" featured in the company's 1988 catalog.
"In our archives of original factory catalogs, we found a sweatshirt made of 50% cotton and 50% polyester. We moved forward with planning this collection around the concept of reproducing that exact item."
This choice of blended fabric was not born out of mere nostalgia. Harada explains that there was a highly rational reason behind it.
"Material-wise, it blends highly absorbent cotton with polyester, which offers excellent quick-drying performance and durability. Additionally, the interior is brushed for a softer feel and enhanced comfort."
Looking through the actual catalog from back then reveals phrases such as "relaxed athletic cut" and "the ideal gear for today's active customer." Considering that sweatshirts were originally developed as sportswear, this functionality was essential.
Absorbing sweat, drying quickly, durable, and easy to move in—in the 1980s, this cotton-poly blend was cutting-edge functional fabric designed to meet the demands of the times. The series revives both the atmosphere of that era and its rational, functional beauty for modern wearers.

The Brand's Signature "Henley Neck" Becomes a Standout Hit

The Classic Sweatshirt Series debuted with a diverse lineup, including a classic crew neck, sweatpants, and the brand's signature Henley neck. Among these, the Henley neck generated a massive response right from its launch, becoming a major hit.
"When it comes to sweatshirts, there are naturally several strong competitors in the market. That's why we focused heavily on the Henley neck as a unique offering that other brands weren't offering. It resonated strongly with consumers and drove its success.
Furthermore, its popularity spread to women's fashion, turning it into a unisex hit and a cornerstone flagship item for our brand."
Differentiation from competitors and expansion into the unisex market were key drivers behind this success. Naturally, attention to detail was equally uncompromising. The buttons feature the brand's iconic "cat-eye buttons."
Additionally, details like crafting horizontal buttonholes in line with original vintage specifications captivated fans with their subtle authenticity. An affordable price tag of ¥6,930 (tax included) undoubtedly fueled its popularity. It was a moment where the brand's DNA and market demand crossed paths in perfect balance.

A Modern Touch Incorporating Vintage Details

The charm of this series lies beyond mere reproduction. One of the highlights is how new models featuring a modern twist are introduced alongside staple items every season.
Take the new "Half-Zip Sweatshirt," for example. It features a "single-claw" zipper lock commonly found on vintage wear from the 1950s and 1960s. While rooted in the theme of the 1980s, its playful spirit shines through by blending in details from an even earlier era.
Another unique feature is the so-called "3B" series, which features printed portraits of classical composers Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.
"In the vintage market, sweatshirts with prints of these composers sell for hundreds of thousands of yen. We created this for people who appreciate that context, thinking, 'Wouldn't it be fun to wear this right now at an affordable price?' Combining these prints with a casual 1980s sweatshirt is something you rarely see anywhere else."
How do you honor history while interpreting and playing with it in a modern context? From the fresh new sax blue color for the half-zip to the lineup as a whole, the entire series demonstrates the brand's flexible product planning. Rather than simply tracing the past, it's an endeavor in editing history to create new value.

Expanding the Classic Sweat Series with Staple and New Colors

The Classic Sweat Series centers on staple colors like ash gray and faded black, with one or two new colors added every season. Today, it boasts a rich lineup of around eight color variations, keeping fans engaged. Another signature feature is the packaging—items are sold in individual custom bags, reminiscent of the brand's legacy made famous by its packable T-shirts.
By carving out a specific era from the brand's vast archives, capturing its essence, and reinterpreting it for today's market, the Classic Sweat Series offers an answer to bridging history with the future. Honoring the past while never being bound by it—this flexible approach may well be why Healthknit has remained beloved for over a century.
