Peak Performance's Lightweight & Warm Down Jacket “Helium” that Weights Under 320g!

2024.12.11
No matter how much winter warmth is rumored, winters in Japan are definitely cold. This boosts the demand for functional cold-weather wear. In fact, a variety of brands continue to launch "outdoor clothing for the city," not just hardcore enthusiasts honing their skills in real environments.
This time, we're focusing on the down series “Helium” by the outdoor brand Peak Performance, which has roots in skiing. The series offers numerous jackets that achieve a lightweight construction of under 320g each while boasting a warmth rating of 700 fill power.
Let’s delve into the appeal of Helium.

Nordic-Inspired Minimalist Design Unchanged Since Its Inception

Peak Performance, a ski brand born in 1986, is approaching its 40th anniversary. Founded in Åre, located almost in the center of Sweden, this area has a long-standing love for winter sports, nurtured by two dedicated skiers who were its founders. Reflecting on those times, Noriko Matsumoto from Peak Performance Japan PR says:
“The 80s were during Japan's economic bubble. On a global scale, it was a dazzling time, and most ski items had flashy colors and patterns. We were skeptical of this trend and thought to create items that we genuinely wanted to wear ourselves, which sparked the inception of the brand.”
The founders, passionate skiers and their friends, envisioned “clothing that combines excellent functionality with a simple yet attractive design.”
“In the early days, we developed chic jackets featuring leather patches on the shoulders. The use of solid colors reflects what we now call Nordic minimalism and has remained unchanged from the brand's inception.
"Meanwhile, the excellent functionality, essential for supporting skiers, has been consistent. A key component of the brand’s DNA is its relationship with 'free ride' [1], which hosts world championships. While this category is still minor in Japan, the brand’s recognition has grown alongside the evolving free skiing competition. Now, we collaborate with World Cup champion skiers and athletes for our product development.”

The Lightweight “Helium” Weighing Under 320g

Truly born and raised in the snow-capped mountains, the remarkable down jacket “Helium” has undoubtedly made the brand known worldwide. True to its name, inspired by the gas used in balloons, it boasts an astonishing lightness that has made it a long-selling series. Each jacket is said to weigh between 240–320g. It excels in compression, water resistance, and wind resistance, with iconic S-shaped stitching reminiscent of ski turns.
“This down jacket was developed to be lightweight while possessing high insulating properties suitable for outdoor activities. The wavy S-stitching optimizes warmth through a quilt pattern that applies the precise amount of down to each section, eliminating cold spots for practicality.”

Since the release of the original “Helium Down Hood Jacket” in 2012, a diverse range of derivative models has emerged.
From its reversible women’s model “Helium Reversible Jacket (Insulation Type),” to the hoodless “Helium Down Jacket,” and the “Helium Hybrid Down Jacket” which features sleeves in fleece material, to the pinpoint-styled “Helium Balaclava” for neck and head coverage.
This variety includes not only outerwear but also middle layers and accessories, blooming into a splendid range. The continuous additions of new models each season serve as a barometer for the growing support for the brand.
Many people also use the Helium jacket as a liner for skiing. Left: “Helium Down Jacket,” 35,200 yen (tax included), Right: “Helium Reversible Jacket,” 52,140 yen (tax included)

On the one hand, it is a quintessential outdoor wear that maintains both functionality and sustainability.
The 700-fill power down used in the current models is fully traceable to its origin, and the shell material employs PFC-free recycled polyamide.
It goes without saying that its toughness withstands the harsh conditions of Northern Europe; the simple and timeless look that carries the founder's vision also offers sustainable benefits, as it can be worn for a long time without being swayed by trends.

Clothing for Skiers by Skiers

However, contrary to its remarkable quality, the name Peak Performance is not often heard in the Japanese fashion scene. As mentioned earlier, it is even more puzzling in the current age where wearing outdoor wear in the city has become commonplace. Why is that?
"We have fundamentally created clothing by skiers for skiers. That belief has not changed. To speak frankly, we do not consider clothing making as fashion. As previously mentioned, our current brand goal is to spread the idea of freeriding around the world.
"The freedom to choose your own lines to ski, the attitude to overcome fear, and the importance of valuing friends and locals correspond to this. The elements that support the foundation of freeriding continue to be the backbone of the brand."
Noriko Matsumoto's words reflect that she has no fashion accounts and has narrowed the sales channels to professional ski shops. It is exceedingly rare for them to appear in fashion magazines. In the past, they have collaborated with the British apparel brand "Nigel Cabourn," but that was an exception.
It can be said that they represent an “outdoor wear that is not worn in the city,” showcasing a craftsmanship-oriented approach. However, its essence ironically aligns with keywords required in modern fashion, such as "authenticity, comfort, sustainability, and simple design."
That said, in its country of origin, Sweden, many people wear Peak Performance on a daily basis. This is likely because skiing is not a temporary fashion, but has become an integral part of the lifestyle there.
"Without changing our stance, Peak Performance will continue to be a ski brand. However, it is very gratifying that more fans are discovering the allure of our items and enjoying them in the city. Ski clothing is not just for skiing, and the importance of freedom and personal choice also overlaps with the spirit of freeriding."
Not overly adhering to trends, the creators themselves become fans, naturally fulfilling what consumers seek. Peak Performance, and Helium, continue to showcase the pride of good products.
