High-Quality Leather Shoes with Unmatched Cost Performance! What Kind of Brand Is "Jalan Sriwijaya"?
The leather shoe brand "Jalan Sriwijaya" boasts high popularity due to its British-quality combined with remarkably low pricing. What is the history of this brand, and what kind of production background does it have? Why is it able to achieve such pricing? I spoke with Yuki Miura from GMT inc., which handles this brand.
High Technical Skills & Commitment to Leather Materials
Recently, more people are incorporating leather shoes into their wardrobe, moving away from a sneaker-only approach. However, while it may be reasonable for business use, it can be quite a hurdle to introduce high-end British or American-made leather shoes into casual wear. This is where "Jalan Sriwijaya" stands out, a brand that manufactures and imports leather shoes from Indonesia. Miura details the history of "Jalan Sriwijaya."
"While 'Jalan Sriwijaya' started selling in the Japanese market in 2003, the roots of the factory behind the brand trace back to 1919. The Indonesian 'Fortuna Shoes,' which is the factory for 'Jalan Sriwijaya,' produced military boots for foreign soldiers when the country was under Dutch rule.
"After enduring World War II and the independence war, the Republic of Indonesia was born in 1950, and by the 1970s, the factory resumed operations under 'Fortuna Shoes' and began producing various kinds of shoes."
During this time, the factory president, Tede Chandra, and production manager, Rudy Suparman, studied in the UK, training in the heart of shoemaking, Northampton. Miura continues.

During this time, the factory president, Tede Chandra, and production manager, Rudy Suparman, studied in the UK, training in the heart of shoemaking, Northampton. Miura continues.
"Rudy Suparman, having enhanced his skills as a shoemaker, further traveled to France, which was then the world's leader in leather production, to learn about the materials used for leather shoes, while also building a vast network of contacts. This is why they can currently use high-grade leather from the renowned French tanneries, Dupuy and Annonay, for the upper calf of their shoes."
The exceptional quality of "Jalan Sriwijaya" leather shoes, which can rival British counterparts, is a testament to the insight and efforts of Tede Chandra and Rudy Suparman, as well as the connections they have formed.

Why They Achieve Unmatched Cost Performance
When thinking of leather shoes, many consider the machine-made "Goodyear Welted" method commonly used in British ready-to-wear shoes; however, Jalan Sriwijaya's hallmark is the "Handsewn Welting" method. As the name implies, it is a technique where the welt is sewn by hand, which is the prototype for the "Goodyear Welted" method, and is typically used in high-end bespoke shoes. Miura explains why this brand insists on the "Handsewn Welting" method.
"Although the two trained in Northampton, the heart of shoemaking in the UK, when they returned to Indonesia, they couldn’t afford to buy the machinery necessary for the 'Goodyear Welted' method. Therefore, they imparted the techniques of the handsewn welting method to many artisans.
"Even now, when mass production is required, they insist on the normally costly 'Handsewn Welting' method through the labor of numerous artisans while lowering costs through corporate efforts. Compared to the 'Goodyear Welted' method, structurally, the handsewn welting method uses one less piece of leather, which contributes to a softer feel and enhanced 'break-in' comfort of leather shoes."
By employing artisans trained in their unique artisan development program and sourcing high-quality French leather through the connections that Tede Chandra and Rudy Suparman have built, they ensure high quality.

Most of the shoes offered by "Jalan Sriwijaya" are sold in the 30,000 yen range. Miura explained the reason for this unbeatable cost-performance.
"The fact that they are made in Indonesia is significant. Production costs are kept lower compared to the UK and Japan. Additionally, when sourcing for Japan, the reduction of import tariffs due to the economic partnership between the two countries allows us to offer shoes of high quality comparable to luxury brands at prices lower than domestic brands in Japan."

An Option that Expands Choices for Leather Shoes Coordination
When I asked Miura which model is the most popular at "Jalan Sriwijaya," he replied:"The 'straight tip' model 'Bandung#98321' is quite popular as it can be used for business and ceremonial occasions. The sole is not leather but made of Dainite sole (rubber sole), providing excellent slip resistance.
"Also, the 'loafers' model 'Garuda#98998' is favored for casual styles. This model comes in not only black but also brown and suede upper types, allowing customers to choose according to their outfit."

"Jalan Sriwijaya" conducts a campaign twice a year where purchasers receive a free shoe tree, and Miura continued that it has received positive feedback.
"The campaign where you receive a shoe tree made of beech wood with the purchase of one pair is popular. If you don't use a shoe tree, the shape can become distorted, and since the soles sweat, it can lead to mold. A good quality shoe tree would cost no less than 10,000 yen, so it's quite a deal!"

Finally, when I asked Miura about the appeal of "Jalan Sriwijaya," he responded:
"This cost-performance is a significant advantage. When I want to wear leather shoes casually, I often hesitate to purchase luxury brand items. In such cases, it's a strength to have this price range to choose from. Of course, it’s not just about being cheap and poor quality; the solid quality accompanying 'Jalan Sriwijaya' is also part of its charm."
Although it offers high quality, the unmatched cost-performance pleasantly exceeds expectations and is something that can only be achieved by "Jalan Sriwijaya." In today’s spotlight on leather shoe styles, why not consider it as one of your options?
