"John Smedley" Summer Luxury Items Knitted with Sea Island Cotton

2025.07.29
With a history spanning over 240 years, the British high-quality knitwear brand John Smedley is renowned for its exquisite quality and elegant silhouettes that exude a classic yet luxurious feel. This timeless knitwear brand is beloved all around the world.
John Smedley is especially known for continuously crafting items with a particular focus on the material "Sea Island Cotton." For this feature, we spoke in detail with Motoaki Michihiro of Lea Mills Agency Ltd. about the unique properties of Sea Island Cotton and recommended summer items.

Sea Island Cotton: With the Luster of Silk & the Luxurious Feel of Cashmere

Founded in 1784, John Smedley initially started out making quality socks, underwear, and nightwear. The high-gauge knit techniques developed then are the foundation of what makes today’s John Smedley unique.
These high-gauge knits are crafted from Merino wool in autumn and winter, and from Sea Island Cotton in spring and summer. The silk-like sheen and cashmere-like feel of Sea Island Cotton are what make John Smedley pieces truly stand out.
First, let’s learn more about Sea Island Cotton.
"Only extra-long staple cotton that uses certified seeds, carefully cultivated over a year through regenerative farming, and passes the rigorous fiber grade certification of the United States Department of Agriculture, is recognized as Sea Island Cotton. Because it is both rare and challenging to grow, it is globally regarded as the finest natural cotton fiber. At John Smedley, we have long selected and used this exceptional cotton."

John Smedley’s Signature Classic Model: "Isis"

After learning about the material, let's take a look at the items made extensively with Sea Island Cotton. First up is the knit polo called "Isis"—a signature staple representing John Smedley.
"I’ve heard that John Smedley transitioned from making undergarments to the modern style around 1900. Among its models, the Isis has been around for about 90 years and has become a signature piece of the brand. Its defining feature is the use of 30-gauge Sea Island Cotton. Not only the Isis, but 90% of our spring and summer lineup consists of 30-gauge and 24-gauge pieces.
"It features a larger polo collar, three buttons, longer sleeves, and ribbing at the hem and cuffs. Additionally, a unique method called ‘linking’ is used, in which stitches are perfectly aligned and joined using specialized machinery, creating what we call a ‘fashion shoulder’—a detail that gives this sleeve its distinctive look.
"While polos typically bring to mind sportiness—like piqué knits that absorb sweat—John Smedley’s take is more dressy. The knit is smooth, and its uses are closer to a shirt—think of it as a dressy knit shirt rather than a typical polo.
"Its silhouette is beautifully tailored and classic. Sometimes it’s nice to leave one button open for a casual look, but when layering with a jacket, closing all the buttons creates a clean line and looks sharp around the collar and V-zone."

The Neutral "REID" Model

Here’s another knit polo to introduce—the "REID" model, which is now a go-to item in today’s menswear market.
"REID is relatively modern and features the most neutral design, making it an easy choice for anyone. Unlike the Isis, it’s crafted with a smaller collar, slightly shorter sleeves, and a more compact width and length. The collar has a banded construction, which keeps it looking natural and sharp even with the top button undone. What sets REID apart is its versatility and effortless wearability."

This Summer, DON’T Overlook John Smedley’s Knit T-Shirts

Along with their knit polos, John Smedley’s summer lineup features knit T-shirts you need to check out. Michihiro has selected two models to introduce next.
"I’d like you to take a look at ‘KIELL’—it features the exact same body as the earlier REID, but in a crew neck version. While spring and summer outfits with T-shirts can sometimes look too casual, the combination of this luxurious material and refined silhouette instantly elevates your style.
"Just as polos can be dressed up, these T-shirt outfits bring a sense of luxury to your summer wardrobe."
KIELL: 37,400 yen (tax included)
"And there's one more knit T-shirt I'd like to introduce. It's a model called 'Tindall,' and although it also uses Sea Island cotton like the others I've mentioned, it's knit at a slightly lower 24-gauge, which makes it a bit different.
"The silhouette is a box shape, and instead of the usual ribbing at the sleeves and hem, it features what's called a welt finish, giving it a more casual feel. This Tindall is recommended for those who want a casual look but still desire a high-quality texture."

Boasting Many Repeat Customers for Its Superior Feel & Comfort

So far we've talked about the appeal of Sea Island cotton and checked out recommended items for this summer. Lastly, we asked about the secret to the brand's long-lasting popularity.
"John Smedley is a brand with a huge number of repeat customers and enjoys remarkable support. For first-time buyers, Isis is often their introduction to John Smedley. But thanks to the unique, unparalleled softness and comfort, many people come back later to buy other items like REID or Tindall.
"Also, depending on the model, around 20 colors are released each season. Most people start with essentials like black or navy, but for customers who already own a few pieces, we recommend seasonal shades like Beige Musk, Parchment, or Sea Glass.
"I think being able to enjoy such a wide range of variations is one of the true charms of John Smedley."
