Making Daily Life More Comfortable: KEYUCA Reimagines the Folding Umbrella's Added Features

2026.06.22
With scorching heatwaves and sudden downpours becoming the new normal, an umbrella has evolved into an everyday essential. For fiscal year 2026, life solution brand KEYUCA has dramatically overhauled its parasol product line, pivoting its strategy to focus on folding umbrellas.
We sat down with Yukako Kawasaki, the merchandiser in charge, to discuss the reasons behind this strategic shift and to get the scoop on three flagship models designed to tackle common user frustrations.

Pivoting from Stick to Folding Umbrellas

Starting in fiscal year 2026, KEYUCA is making a major shift in its parasol merchandising mix, changing the ratio of stick umbrellas to folding umbrellas from 6:4 to an impressive 2:8.
This strategic pivot is driven by the soaring demand for portable folding umbrellas, fueled by more frequent use during heatwaves and a growing male customer base. However, this trend has also highlighted common frustrations like the "difficulty of folding" and the "hassle of putting them back in their sleeves."
The new product line directly addresses these everyday annoyances. The central theme is stress-free use, leading to the development of three specialized models focused on "easy folding, wind resistance, and lightweight design."

A "Special Sheet" Process That Revolutionizes How You Fold an Umbrella

"【Light-Blocking & UV Protection】Easy-to-Fold Light-Blocking Folding Umbrella55cm" 6,490 yen (incl. tax)
The "【Light-Blocking & UV Protection】Easy-to-Fold Light-Blocking Folding Umbrella55cm" was developed to tackle the biggest drawback of folding umbrellas: the hassle of putting them away. It features a versatile 55cm size suitable for everyone, but its standout feature is a special PET resin sheet processed into the inner fabric.
This sheet acts as a guide for the umbrella's creases. Bonded to the fabric, the sheet has a "memory" for the folds, allowing the canopy to collapse into neat pleats the moment you close it. Even after long-term use, the creases won't fade, ensuring it stays just as easy to fold as the day you bought it.
The sheet's "PET resin processing" enhances ease of folding
The biggest challenge during development was thinning the sheet and optimizing its placement.
"If we covered the entire fabric with the sheet, it would become too heavy and lose its portability. We went through countless micro-adjustments to the layout to ensure the umbrella remained lightweight enough for daily carrying while still reliably guiding the folds," explains Kawasaki.
Moreover, the enhancements didn't stop at the umbrella itself; the storage sleeve also got a clever redesign. Traditional umbrella sleeves are often designed to be tight and slim, which only adds to the frustration of packing the umbrella away.
To solve this, the new design incorporates a snap button at the mouth of the sleeve, allowing the opening to be widened considerably. This simple change makes it a breeze to slide the folded umbrella back into its sleeve, significantly reducing the stress of the entire process.
The included sleeve has also been redesigned. It's not only easier to use but also comes in a wide variety of colors

Incredible Resilience: The "Wind-Resistant Umbrella" Made with Bulletproof Panel Material

"【Light-Blocking & UV Protection】Light-Blocking Wind-Resistant Folding Umbrella 55cm Solid" 2,860 yen (incl. tax)
Next up is the "【Light-Blocking & UV Protection】Light-Blocking Wind-Resistant Folding Umbrella 55cm Solid". Its simple, solid-color design and an array of earth tones give it a look that fits seamlessly into any professional setting.

The core innovation of this product lies in its use of polycarbonate for some of the ribs. Polycarbonate is an extraordinary material known for its high impact resistance—strong enough for bulletproof panels—combined with remarkable flexibility.
Traditional umbrella frames have a critical flaw: once bent by a strong gust, they often stay bent, leading to permanent damage or breakage. The polycarbonate frame, however, is designed to be different. Even if a sudden gust of wind, like those that whip between city buildings, flips the umbrella inside out, the frame's flexibility allows it to snap back to its original shape without breaking.
The polycarbonate frame provides robust wind resistance
"It has passed tests by third-party organizations and meets our own unique standards, making it tough enough to handle typical strong winds without breaking. It's bound to become your trusty sidekick for everyday use."
Interestingly, this umbrella skips the special sheet processing mentioned earlier. The reason? A growing demand for sun-blocking umbrellas from men, and a desire to create a price point that's friendly for newcomers who aren't used to carrying an umbrella daily.
By zeroing in on wind resistance and a lightweight design, this umbrella perfectly balances practicality with cost-performance.

The 'Light & Slim Umbrella': Maintaining Strength with Just 5 Ribs

"Sun-blocking/UV-cut: Light & Slim 50cm Folding Umbrella" 3,190 yen (tax included)
The "Sun-blocking/UV-cut: Light & Slim 50cm Folding Umbrella" was created with users who value portability above all else in mind—particularly women who often carry small bags. Sized at a slightly more compact 50cm, it's incredibly slim and lightweight.
Targeted towards women, the color palette features easy-to-match shades.
Most folding umbrellas are built with six ribs, but this one makes a bold move by cutting that number down to five. Removing one rib drastically shrinks its folded diameter and sheds weight. But, of course, fewer ribs can mean a direct hit to the umbrella's overall strength.
Carbon fiber makes up for the fewer ribs, ensuring a more comfortable user experience.
To tackle this challenge, the ribs are crafted from an even lighter and stronger carbon fiber. What's more, lightweight, compact plastic is used for the handle, showcasing a meticulous effort to shave off every possible gram.
While it doesn't feature wind resistance, its biggest draw for those who want on-the-go UV protection is its sheer convenience. It’s small, light, easy to carry, and ready to pop open whenever you need it.

Boosting Portability with an Expanded Lineup of Umbrella Cases

KEYUCA isn't just leveling up the umbrellas themselves; they're also putting serious effort into expanding their lineup of accessories, especially umbrella cases.
They noticed a common customer pain point: people lose the little pouch that comes with their folding umbrella and, not knowing how to store it, just buy a whole new one. In response, KEYUCA has rolled out several standalone umbrella cases.
A dedicated case for folding umbrellas has also arrived—a welcome item that feels long overdue.
For folding umbrellas, the company introduced the "Foldable Absorbent Umbrella Case," designed for easy portability. The inside is lined with an absorbent towel-like fabric, so you can slip a wet umbrella in without worrying about leaks. When you're not using it, it folds into thirds, and you can use the attached strap to hook it onto your bag, eliminating any carrying hassle.
This is where KEYUCA's extensive product development expertise really shines.
This case lets you quickly stow your umbrella without getting your hands wet, taking the headache out of rainy days. By expanding their lineup with accessories like this, KEYUCA is positioning itself as the go-to brand for solving all your weather-related worries.

Catering to a Wide Range of Needs

It's also worth noting that every single product maintains a consistently high standard of sun-blocking and UV-cutting performance. This means customers can pick an umbrella based on their preferred features—like ease of folding, wind resistance, or weight—without ever having to compromise on core protection.
The prices are also offered in a wide range. While still using high-performance materials, the company made this possible through diligent business efforts, like reassessing manufacturing countries and scheduling production during factory off-seasons.
Looking ahead, the plan is to further bolster their lineup of unisex products and continually promote the idea that owning a single great umbrella can make everyday life much more comfortable.
KEYUCA's refresh of its parasol collection was all about tackling the classic frustrations of folding umbrellas—being "hard to fold," "easy to break," and "a pain to carry"—by rethinking their structure and materials. This commitment to carefully re-engineering solutions for life's little annoyances perfectly embodies the company's mission of providing "life solutions."
