Five Features to Tackle Weather Challenges
The concept KEYUCA holds dear is 'life solutions.' Instead of just chasing trendy designs, the brand makes it a point to offer products from the consumer's perspective to solve everyday problems. This 'Water-Repellent Heat-Shielding UV-Cut Hoodie' was also developed with the theme of solving the weather-related challenges that change throughout the year.
According to Kawasaki, this hoodie is equipped with five main features: 'UV cut,' 'water-repellent,' 'cool-touch,' 'pollen block,' and 'easy care.' These features were carefully selected to handle the changing climates of all four seasons, designed so that one item can address the challenges of multiple seasons.
Behind this multi-functionality lies the expertise KEYUCA has cultivated over many years of focusing on developing rain gear. For about the last 10 years, the brand has been strengthening its lineup of umbrellas and raincoats, accumulating 'heat-shielding and light-blocking' technology to cope with recent extreme weather and intense heat. This hoodie is a prime example of applying the technology developed for rain gear, born from a keen awareness of consumer needs regarding weather changes.
Kawasaki states that she deliberately focused on creating a balance for everyday use. Her words, "Rather than having people buy multiple items for each season—one for pollen season, another for when it gets hot—we want them to be able to use a single product for a long time," convey a deep desire to support a comfortable lifestyle while reducing the burden on the user.
A Face Cover Born from Real-Life Experience
The product's standout feature is arguably its 'face cover,' which is integrated with the hood but also detachable. Typical UV-cut hoodies can cover the neck, but they often fail to protect the front of the face, especially sun-prone areas like the nose and cheeks. However, this hoodie comes standard with a face cover that can securely cover up to the bridge of the nose.

This design, she explains, was born from her own personal experience. After all, the 'face' is what women are most concerned about protecting from the sun. While a parasol can block some sun from the face, there are many situations in daily life where you can't use an umbrella. A prime example was 'inside a car.'
Kawasaki recalls her own experiences while driving, saying she felt there was a challenge in protecting herself from the sun inside the car. Her face was often left defenseless against the UV rays pouring through the windshield and side windows.
If she could physically block the parts that sun visors and sunglasses couldn't cover with a piece of clothing, she could significantly reduce the risk of sunburn inside the car. That train of thought sparked the idea for a hoodie with a built-in face cover.
Mesh that Prevents Makeup from Smudging

One of the most significant upgrades for the 2026 model was a change in the inner material of the face cover. According to Kawasaki, this model features a mesh material on the inner surface of the face cover that comes into contact with the skin.
Previous models had a problem where foundation and lipstick would cling to the fabric due to moisture from breathing and friction. Although the face cover is removable and washable, having makeup stains appear with every use was a major headache for users.
To solve this, the 2026 model incorporates a mesh material on the inside that doesn't stick to the skin. This not only improves breathability and reduces stuffiness but also minimizes makeup transfer by decreasing the physical contact area. "We heard from users that washing it every time was a hassle, so we designed it to be smudge-proof against makeup. That's the feature I'm most excited about in this year's update," Kawasaki says with pride.
In another move to beat the heat, the underarm area was also switched to a mesh material. With the intense heat of recent years, preventing stuffiness in areas like the underarms, where heat tends to build up, is essential. By strategically placing mesh in the underarms—an area less exposed to direct rain and sun—the design achieves a balance between water repellency and breathability.

What's more, a small but clever update was added for convenience: a slit in the cuff for checking your watch.

Normally, when you wear a long-sleeved hoodie, your watch is hidden, forcing you to roll up your sleeve to check the time. But during activities like running or walking, even that simple motion can be a nuisance. By adding a slit to the cuff, you can keep your wrists covered to prevent sunburn while smoothly checking the screen of your smartwatch or other device.
Material and Sizing for Everyone
Another standout feature is that the product is designed to be unisex.Traditionally, items like parasols and UV-cut clothing were mainly aimed at women. However, in recent years, demand for light-blocking items has surged, thanks to growing beauty consciousness among men and the need for protection against heatstroke. At KEYUCA, sales of men's light-blocking umbrellas have been climbing year after year, and this trend has driven the development of unisex apparel.
To create a design that both men and women could wear without feeling out of place, the development process started with a meticulous selection of materials. It required a delicate balance—not too sporty, yet not too feminine.
The team landed on a material that provides a "polished look" while toning down the casual vibe. By using a fabric with a matte texture and just the right amount of structure, they created a finish that blends seamlessly into a wide range of settings, from everyday city wear to outdoor and sports scenes.

The sizing was also cleverly engineered. To make it a unisex item, the length was set slightly longer than a typical hoodie. This length gives men a just-right fit, while for women, it offers a flattering effect by covering the hips. Rather than just adding more sizes, they engineered a single design that perfectly meets the needs of both men and women.
Additionally, a slit is built into the back of the hood to let hair pass through. While this feature is primarily aimed at women with long hair, it still offers freedom of choice.

It's designed so you can use it only when you want to pull your hair through. When your hair is down, or for men with short hair, it simply looks like a design feature. This allows for versatility: you can tuck your hair inside the hood on days you want to protect it from UV rays, or pull it through the slit on days you want to prioritize keeping your neck cool.
Finding the "Just Right" Balance by Adding and Subtracting Features
Packing five functions—UV protection, water repellency, a cooling touch, pollen blocking, and easy care—into a single hoodie was no small technical feat. "This product is what we arrived at after a long process of adding and subtracting," Kawasaki shared, explaining the difficulty of making multiple functions work together seamlessly. For instance, it's clear that a tremendous amount of effort went into striking the right balance, such as pairing the treatment for enhanced water repellency with a structure that ensures breathability, or embedding a special sheet in the hood to provide a heat-shielding effect.

What KEYUCA aimed for was not to win a numbers game with specs, but to strike the perfect balance to minimize the everyday stress people experience. Kawasaki acknowledges, "If we were to focus on specializing in just one function, there are higher-spec products on the market." However, he states that the reason this hoodie is so popular is its year-round versatility.
Looking ahead, the team is envisioning an expansion into even more settings. While currently centered on everyday use, they are poised to broaden the possibilities of UV-cut apparel for occasions like beach outings or poolside lounging. Moreover, the heat-shielding and light-blocking technology perfected in the hoodie has been adapted for other items like hats and arm covers, advancing their proposal for a total UV protection solution.
Kawasaki's words reflected a commitment to never settling for the status quo but continuously updating from the user's perspective. This "Water-Repellent Heat-Shielding UV Cut Hoodie" will surely continue to evolve as a modern-day essential, adapting to our changing climate and lifestyles.
