Unveiling Kizik: The Brand Dominating the Hands-Free Shoe Market with Patented Technology

2026.01.22
The market for "hands-free shoes"—footwear you can slip into without using your hands—is booming worldwide. Japan, in particular, is seen as a high-potential market due to a culture where people frequently put on and take off their shoes.
Riding this wave is Kizik, a hands-free shoe brand from Utah, USA, which launched in Japan last year and has been steadily growing its customer base. We sat down with Hideto Takahara, President and CEO of Marubeni Consumer Brands, the company spearheading Kizik's expansion in Japan, to discuss the brand's philosophy and technology.

While Kizik may be a newer name in Japan's hands-free shoe market, its history is surprisingly deep. It all began in 2009, when founder Mike Pratt, along with design engineers and mathematicians, launched an R&D project to tackle the everyday hassle of putting on and taking off shoes.
In 2017, eight years after the project started, Kizik was officially founded as the world's first brand dedicated to hands-free shoes. In 2019, the company received an investment from Nike and entered into a licensing agreement. Today, Kizik holds and manages over 200 patents, cementing its position as a technological leader in the hands-free space.
"Our founder, Mike Pratt, originally ran the golf bag brand OGIO, but he was also an inventor at heart," says Takahara. "He was always asking, 'How can I solve the little, overlooked inconveniences of daily life?' That question led him to focus on the simple act of putting on and taking off shoes."
While technology has streamlined so many aspects of our lives, why do we still accept that shoes have to be "something you bend down to put on" or "something you have to tie"? This fundamental question became the starting point for their hands-free shoe research.
"I believe it's precisely because he was an outsider to the footwear industry that he could challenge conventional wisdom and arrive at a completely new idea."

Patented Technology Creates an Unprecedented "Hands-Free" Experience

While Kizik boasts numerous patented technologies, the heart of its hands-free shoes is a unique structure called "Spring-Back."
Many conventional hands-free shoes feature a rigid heel that acts like a built-in shoehorn. While this makes them easy to slide into, it often results in a weak fit, and many users complain that they slip off too easily.
In contrast, Kizik's Spring-Back technology allows you to step down on the heel, compressing it to create space for your foot. Once your foot is in, the heel cup instantly springs back into place, just like a spring. This feature delivers both a true hands-free experience and a secure, snug fit.

Today, the company's team includes engineers, marketers, and designers from other major shoe brands. Their research extends beyond the hands-free mechanism to the fundamental structure of the shoe, including the midsole and outsole. This ensures that the essential functions—like ergonomic stability and fatigue reduction—are also delivered at the highest level.

"We offer a wide range of designs that go beyond just 'convenient shoes.' We have models where the Spring-Back mechanism is a visible, fun gimmick, as well as classic sneakers and leather shoes where the technology is concealed for a more fashion-forward look. Next spring, we also plan to release new hands-free shoes with specialized functions."

Revolutionizing Boots: The Potential of the Hands-Free Juno Series

The "Juno" series, which brings hands-free technology to boots, has garnered particular attention worldwide. The first model even won a 2024 CES Innovation Award, generating significant buzz.

"Of all footwear, boots are the most challenging to put on and take off. The concept of slipping them on hands-free was revolutionary, and I heard they made a massive splash at launch."
The 'Juno 2,' introduced last season, elevates the original's acclaimed hands-free design. It's equipped with the latest 'External Flex Arc™' technology, which delivers an instantly natural fit the moment you slide your foot in.
The shoe combines a lightweight, cushioned EVA midsole with a durable ripstop nylon upper. The high-top 'Juno 2 High' features spring-lock laces for a customizable ankle fit, and is even lined with faux fur for extra warmth.

Although many companies now offer a variety of hands-free shoes, first-time Kizik users are often amazed by how effortlessly their feet slide in.
Women’s Vegas 2 29,700 yen (incl. tax)
"We call it the 'aha moment.' Even people who are skeptical at first are amazed, going 'Whoa!?', and often buy them right away—a trend we see both in our home country and in Japan. Back home, the conversion rate from try-on to purchase is about 80%. And while we don't have exact numbers for Japan yet, our impression is that nearly 70% of people who try them on end up buying them."
The brand currently offers about 30 styles for men, women, and kids, with plans to expand the lineup to cater to even more lifestyles and needs.
Kizik's hands-free shoes are designed to completely eliminate the daily hassle of putting on and taking off footwear, thanks to their patented technology. Though still a recent arrival in Japan, the brand plans to create more opportunities for people to experience the shoes through pop-up events and other initiatives.
This groundbreaking comfort is bound to become the talk of the town in no time. Be among the first to savor this entirely new experience of putting on shoes.
