Examining the Reasons Behind the Popularity of the High-Performance, High-Design "Klättermusen" Backpack

2025.02.10
The "Klättermusen" backpack is increasing its presence in outdoor shops. This suggests it is rather well-received. This Swedish-born outdoor brand has been in the spotlight for its fashion appeal, but its inherent functionality is finally being recognized for its outdoor gear.

In particular, the lightweight, compact, and fully waterproof backpack "Fjörm 18L" may look simple at first glance, but is a high-performance model packed with ingenuity, offering convenience for both outdoor settings and urban environments. I visited the store in Jimbocho, Tokyo and spoke with PR representative Shu Sakuma.
Fjörm 18L, 33,000 yen. Capacity: 18. Weight: 448g. Fully waterproof. Available in new color Amaranth Red as well as staple colors Raven (black) and Clay (white)

Outer Fabric Made of Original Material with Waterproof Performance of 10,000mm, and the Seams Are Well Sealed from the Inside

"It is extremely popular even for urban use, but we want to convey that its sturdy outdoor brand quality also stands out in the field. Many general customers might still have a strong impression of it being just fashionable. While that is not a bad thing in itself, once they actually hold the product, I believe they will realize that it excels not only in design but also in functionality," Sakuma explains.
As he notes, the "Fjörm 18L" packs functionality that exceeds expectations in appearance. It's lightweight when held and fits snugly like a vest when worn. That alone is impressive, but it also features a fully waterproof structure made of original fabric.
A water resistance of 10,000mm indicates that the fabric can withstand a water pressure of 10,000mm (10m) with a 1cm² column of water
"The main fabric, the 210 denier RethinaⓇ, is a unique material with waterproof performance of 10,000mm. This serves as the outer fabric of the backpack, with seams sealed from the inside, and a soft fabric as the lining, making it inconspicuous that waterproofing is applied. It might be hard to imagine from the outside that it’s waterproof," Sakuma mentions. Many waterproof backpacks often have a bulky appearance, but the "Fjörm 18L" does not exhibit this in a negative way. It presents high functionality discreetly. Whether outdoors or in the city, it's surprisingly common for water to infiltrate the backpack when caught in an unforeseen rain. While a rain cover can prevent this, it can take some effort, and many people often don’t carry one. In this regard, it is reassuring to have a backpack that subtly features waterproof specifications.

An Outdoor Brand with a DIY Spirit that Started from Repairing Climbing Gaiters

"Founded in 1975, 'Klättermusen' began when founder Peter Askulp, who enjoyed climbing while studying forestry, repaired his own gaiters (equipment designed to prevent snow or sand from entering shoes). It started as a project among friends to repair and improve various climbing gear, gradually evolving into a brand that manufactures bags and clothing.

"This background contributes to a brand spirit characterized by a DIY mentality and durable craftsmanship, producing long-lasting products and fostering a culture of repair. This links to its simple designs and distinctive details, contributing to its fashion appeal as well."
Details based on functionality attract attention from a design perspective
The shoulder harness features a lightweight, breathable mesh design, and the attached webbing allows for the flexible attachment of gear using carabiners and other parts. It enables fixating additional bottle holders or sub-bags at your preferred height, arranged in a vertical line. This functional aspect also receives aesthetic appreciation.

"The chest strap, which fixes around the mid-chest area, incorporates a '4-S system' that supports it at four points. This method, instead of the usual two-point strap system, allows for greater mobility while distributing stress across the chest area, thus being functionally detailed. It also contributes to the overall lightness of the design. You can secure it at your desired location using multiple webbing points," Sakuma explains.
It includes two large mesh pockets from the front to the side on both sides
A backpack with mesh pockets that accommodate bottles is widely available in the market. Some types come with a mesh pocket at the front, which are all convenient, but the mesh pocket of the "Fjörm 18L" features a large pocket that extends from the front to the side, divided into two on each side.

"Of course, you can store bottles as well as trekking poles. The divider is just in the middle, so both sides have a large capacity, making it a great option for temporarily storing clothes for frequent changes. It's up to you whether to use it for snacks, maps, or anything else. Feel free to use it however you like."

For wet items, it’s better to store them in the mesh pocket rather than inside the main compartment to fully utilize its waterproof capabilities. However, it’s not completely impossible to have something moist inside due to unavoidable circumstances. In such cases, the backpack is designed to be turned inside out for drying.
The red is the lining. By flipping the backpack inside out, you can use the loop at the inner bottom to hang it somewhere to dry. Incredible thought went into this!

Committed to Functionality at Every Corner, Only Adding Highly Practical Parts!

"Adding non-functional parts tends to weaken the structure, so we tend to eliminate unnecessary elements as much as possible. Although it appears very simple at first glance, the overall high functionality is what defines 'Klättermusen.'"

You can temporarily store trekking poles in a position wedged at your side while walking.
Using the loop on the side and the shoulder harness cord, you can swiftly attach and detach trekking poles. This is particularly helpful when walking on rocky terrain, as it allows you to keep your hands free without having to take off your backpack.

The "Fjörm 18L" features functions that are subtly integrated, with a simple appearance suitable for everyday use, making it lightweight, compact, and fully waterproof. This seems destined to become an indispensable item.
